The Terminator and Day Length
Students understand that the terminator is a great circle perpendicular to the sunlight that tilts with the Sun's declination δ, so the day length D and the noon sun altitude h = 90° − |φ − δ| change with latitude and season, and that polar day and polar night occur at high latitudes.

Predict (before you touch anything)
On the June solstice, which do you think has a longer day: 35°N (near Japan) or 35°S?💡 夏至の日、地球の自転軸の北側は太陽の方と反対の方のどちらに傾いているでしょうか。On the June solstice, is the northern end of Earth's axis tilted toward or away from the Sun?
On the March equinox (n = 80), do you think the day length differs between the Equator, Japan, and places near the North Pole?💡 太陽の赤緯が 0° のとき、明暗界線は両極を通るかどうかを考えてみましょう。Think about whether the terminator passes through both poles when the Sun's declination is 0°.
Try it
Press "Pause" to stop the rotation. With "Latitude φ" at 35.00° and "Day of the year n" at 80 (near March equinox), read "Sun declination δ", "Day length D", "Noon sun altitude h", "Sunrise" and "Sunset" in the table, and check in the "Side view of Earth" that the terminator passes through both poles.
Set n to 172 (near June solstice). Observe how the terminator tilts and how day and night look near the North and South Poles. Set the "Time" slider to 12:00 and record the day length and noon sun altitude. Then set the latitude to −35° (35° S) and compare.
With latitude 35° and n = 172, move the "Time" slider through 4:48 → 4:54 → 12:00 → 19:06 → 19:12. Watch the "Sunrise!" and "Sunset!" messages as the observer (red dot) crosses the terminator, the "Sun altitude now" value, and the "Close-up: stick shadow" view at bottom right.
Set the latitude to 66.5° and to 70°, and check "Day length D", "Sunrise" and "State" at n = 172 and n = 355 (near Dec. solstice). Also check latitude −90° (South Pole) at n = 172.
Set the latitude to 0° (Equator), check the day length and noon sun altitude at n = 172, then press "Play" and watch one day of rotation (24 seconds).
Check
At n = 172, what were the day length and noon sun altitude at 35°N and 35°S?→ δ = +23.44° で、北緯35°は D = 14.36 時間・h = 78.44°(日の出 4:49、日の入り 19:11)。 With δ = +23.44°, 35°N had D = 14.36 hours and h = 78.44° (sunrise 4:49, sunset 19:11). 35°S had D = 9.64 hours and h = 31.56°. 35°N at the December solstice (n = 355) also had D = 9.64 hours and h = 31.57°, so the two hemispheres are mirror images.
At the March equinox (n = 80), what were the day length and the terminator like?→ δ = +0.00° で、北緯35°でも D = 12.00 時間(日の出 6:00、日の入り 18:00)、正午太陽高度は 55.00° だった。 δ = +0.00°, and even at 35°N, D = 12.00 hours (sunrise 6:00, sunset 18:00) with a noon sun altitude of 55.00°. The terminator passes through the North and South Poles, so day and night are equal at every latitude.
What was the day length at latitude 70° for n = 172 and n = 355, and at latitude 66.5° for n = 172?→ 70°・n = 172 は |tanφ·tanδ| = 1.19 > 1 で D = 24.00 時間、「極昼:一日中太陽が沈まない」(正午高度 43.44°)。 At 70° with n = 172, |tanφ·tanδ| = 1.19 > 1, so D = 24.00 hours and "Polar day: the Sun never sets" (noon altitude 43.44°). At 70° with n = 355, D = 0.00 hours and "Polar night: the Sun never rises" (noon altitude −3.43°, no shadow). At 66.5° with n = 172, |tanφ·tanδ| ≈ 1.00, right near the boundary, and D = 23.41 hours; past the boundary it jumps to 24 hours. The South Pole (−90°) at n = 172 was in polar night.
How was the length of the noon stick shadow (stick = 1) related to the sun altitude?→ 影の長さは 1/tan h で、太陽が高いほど短い。 The shadow length is 1/tan h, so the higher the sun, the shorter the shadow. At 35°N on the June solstice (h = 78.44°) it was 0.20, at the Equator at n = 172 (h = 66.56°) it was 0.43, and at 35°S at n = 172 (h = 31.56°) it was 1.63.
Think further
On the June solstice, the Sun never sets north of 66.6°N. Use the position of the terminator to explain why.→ 夏至には自転軸の北側が太陽の方へ 23.4° 傾くので、明暗界線は北極を通らず、北極から 23.4° 離れた緯度 90° − 23.4° = 66.6° のところまで昼側に入る。 At the June solstice the northern end of the axis tilts 23.4° toward the Sun, so the terminator does not pass through the North Pole; the day side reaches 23.4° beyond the pole, down to latitude 90° − 23.4° = 66.6°. Places farther north never cross the terminator as Earth rotates, so they stay on the day side and the Sun never sets. In the formula, |tanφ·tanδ| > 1 and the day length becomes 24 hours.
At the Equator the day length was always 12 hours whatever the season (n). Why does the noon sun altitude still change?→ 明暗界線は大円なので、赤道とは必ず正反対の2点で交わり、赤道はいつもちょうど半分が昼になる(φ = 0 で tanφ·tanδ = 0)。 Because the terminator is a great circle, it always crosses the Equator at two opposite points, so exactly half of the Equator is in daylight (at φ = 0, tanφ·tanδ = 0). The noon altitude, however, is h = 90° − |0° − δ|, which depends on δ: 90° at the equinoxes and 66.56° at the June solstice (δ = +23.44°).
Common misconceptions
In polar summer the Sun climbs almost overhead" or "places with the midnight sun are the hottest." Even during polar day the noon sun is low (about 43° at 70° latitude and about 23° at the North Pole on the June solstice), so sunlight strikes at a slant.
The terminator always runs from the North Pole to the South Pole." It passes through both poles only at the equinoxes (δ = 0); at other times it is tilted according to δ.

Declination uses the approximation δ = 23.44·sin(2π(n−80)/365), and atmospheric refraction and the Sun's apparent size are ignored (real days are a few minutes longer and the polar-day region is slightly larger). Time is local solar time, with noon when the Sun crosses the meridian. Choosing a southern latitude switches the top view to a view from above the South Pole. The "Sunrise!" / "Sunset!" message stays on screen after the last event, so have students move the time slider back and forth across the boundary to confirm it.
