Earth's Tilt and the Seasons

地学 · 地学単元: 地球の自転と季節(自転軸の傾き)Earth's Tilt and the Seasons 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that Earth orbits the Sun with its axis tilted by 23.4° and always pointing the same direction in space (toward Polaris), so the Sun's declination changes by ±23.4° over a year, which changes the noon sun altitude and day length with the seasons and produces the four seasons.

Predict (before you touch anything)

While Earth goes once around the Sun, do you think the direction of its axis turns along with the orbit, or stays pointing the same way?💡 北極星が1年中ほぼ同じ方向(真北の空)に見えることを思い出しましょう。Remember that Polaris is seen in almost the same direction (due north) all year round.
If Earth's axis were not tilted at all (tilt 0°), how do you think the noon sun altitude and day length in Japan would change over a year?💡 傾きがないとき、太陽光は1年中どの緯度の上に垂直に当たるでしょうか。With no tilt, over which latitude would sunlight shine straight down all year?

Try it

Press "⏸ Pause" to stop the automatic orbit. With "Observer latitude" at "35°N (near Japan)", move "Season (orbit position)" to 0° → 90° → 180° → 270°. Record the direction of the red line (Earth's axis) and the day–night boundary in the orbit view, and the "Declination δ", "Noon altitude h" and "Day length" values in the panel.
At 90° (summer solstice) and 270° (winter solstice), compare how sunlight strikes the "Noon cross-section" diagram at bottom left, the sun altitude shown there, and the position of the marker on the "Noon sun altitude at 35°N (1 year)" graph at bottom right.
Set the "Axial tilt" slider to 0° and move the season to 90° and 270°. Check whether the declination, noon altitude and day length change. Then set the tilt to 45° and look at the values at the summer solstice (90°).
Return the tilt to 23.4°, set "Observer latitude" to "66.6°N (Arctic Circle)" and "90°N (North Pole)", and check the day length at the summer solstice (90°) and winter solstice (270°).
Choose "0°N (Equator)" and compare the noon altitude and day length at the spring equinox (0°), summer solstice (90°) and winter solstice (270°).

Check

In the orbit view, what happened to the direction of the axis (red line) as Earth moved around its orbit? Which way was the Northern Hemisphere tilted at the summer and winter solstices?→ 赤線はどの位置でも北極星の方向へ同じ向きのまま平行移動していた。 The red line kept the same direction toward Polaris at every position, simply moving parallel to itself. At the summer solstice (90°) the Northern Hemisphere tilted toward the Sun, and at the winter solstice (270°) away from it. At the equinoxes it tilted neither way.
At 35°N, what were the noon altitude and day length at the summer and winter solstices? What about at the equinoxes?→ 夏至は δ = 23.40° で正午高度 78.40°、昼の長さ 14.4 時間。 At the summer solstice, δ = 23.40°, the noon altitude was 78.40° and the day length 14.4 hours. At the winter solstice, δ = −23.40°, the noon altitude was 31.60° and the day length 9.6 hours. At the equinoxes, δ = 0°, the noon altitude was 55.00° and the day length 12.0 hours.
What happened when the axial tilt was set to 0°?→ どの季節でも赤緯は 0.00° のままで、北緯 35° の正午高度は常に 55.00°、昼の長さは常に 12.0 時間になり、年変化が消えた。 The declination stayed at 0.00° in every season, so at 35°N the noon altitude was always 55.00° and the day length always 12.0 hours: the yearly change disappeared. With a tilt of 45°, the summer-solstice noon altitude became 80.00° and the day length 17.9 hours, making the seasonal difference even larger.
At 66.6°N and 90°N, what was the day length at the summer and winter solstices?→ 北緯 66.6° では夏至が「24時間(極昼の境界)」、冬至が「0時間(極夜の境界)」で、冬至の正午高度は 0.00° だった。 At 66.6°N the summer solstice showed "24 hours (edge of midnight sun)" and the winter solstice "0 hours (edge of polar night)", with a winter noon altitude of 0.00°. At 90°N the summer solstice showed "24 hours (midnight sun)" and the winter solstice "0 hours (polar night)", with a winter noon altitude of −23.40° (below the horizon).

Think further

How is the noon sun altitude related to summer being hot and winter being cold? Explain by comparing it with the idea that "summer is when Earth is closer to the Sun."→ 太陽高度が高いほど、同じ面積の地面が受ける光のエネルギーが多くなる(光が垂直に近い角度で集中して当たる)。 The higher the sun, the more light energy each patch of ground receives, because the light arrives closer to straight down and is more concentrated. The day is also longer, so more heat is received each day. At 35°N, the summer solstice gives 78.4° and 14.4 hours, while the winter solstice gives only 31.6° and 9.6 hours. Seasons come from the axial tilt, so when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. If distance were the cause, both hemispheres would have summer at the same time, which does not happen.
Why is the day length at the Equator (0°N) always 12 hours, with a noon altitude of 90° at the equinoxes and 66.6° at the solstices?→ φ = 0° では tanφ = 0 なので tanφ·tanδ = 0 となり、赤緯に関係なく昼の長さは 12 時間になる。 At φ = 0°, tanφ = 0, so tanφ·tanδ = 0 and the day length is 12 hours regardless of declination. The noon altitude is 90° − |0° − δ|, so it is straight overhead (90°) at the equinoxes (δ = 0°) and 66.6° at the solstices (δ = ±23.4°).

The model uses a circular orbit and approximates declination as δ = tilt × sin(orbital angle); day length is computed from cos h0 = −tanφ·tanδ, ignoring atmospheric refraction and the Sun's apparent size (real days are a few minutes longer). At 90°N at the equinoxes the formula is undefined, so the limiting value of 12 hours is shown. The work also suits junior-high lessons on Earth's motion; have students explain temperature changes using both sun altitude and day length.
