Stellar Evolution in the Onion-Layer Model

Stellar Evolution in the Onion-Layer Model 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that a star builds up onion-like layers, with hotter and heavier elements toward the center, each time its core runs out of fuel; that whether its initial mass is below or above about 8 solar masses decides whether it ends as a white dwarf or as a Type II supernova with a neutron star; and that luminosity is set by radius and surface temperature, while distance changes only the apparent brightness.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When a Sun-like star becomes a red giant, how do you think its radius and surface temperature change compared with its main-sequence stage? Does its luminosity go up or down?💡 光度は L = 4πR²σT⁴ で決まります。 Luminosity is given by L = 4πR²σT⁴. Compare how strongly the radius and the temperature each affect it.
Do you think a 1-solar-mass star and a 15-solar-mass star will form the same layers of elements inside and end in the same way?💡 重い元素どうしを核融合させるには、より高い中心温度が必要です。Fusing heavier elements needs a higher core temperature.

Try it

Press "Pause" to stop the automatic playback. Keep "(1) Initial mass" at 1.00 M☉ and move "(2) Evolution progress" through 5% → 45% → 55% → 75% → 85% → 95%. Each time, record the cutaway on the left, the "Layers (in → out)" row, the stage description, and the Radius, Surface temp. and Luminosity values.
At 45% progress (red giant), look at the outside view on the right: read the star's color, how it compares with the "main-seq. size" circle, and the "R/R(main seq.) = ×..." ratio shown at the top.
Set "(1) Initial mass" to about 15 M☉ and move the progress through 5% → 55% → 65% → 75% → 80% → 85% → 95%. Record how a new layer is added at the center each time and how the star ends.
Keep the progress at 95% and move the initial mass back and forth between about 7.5 M☉ and 8.5 M☉. Check that the "Stages" list at the bottom and the final stage switch.
With Initial mass 1.00 M☉ and 5% progress, set "(3) Distance" to 10 and to 1000 light-years. Check that "Apparent brightness", the magnitude and the "Night sky" box change, while Radius, Surface temp., Luminosity and the star's color and size do not.

Check

When the 1 M☉ star went from the main sequence (5%) to a red giant (45%), how did its radius, surface temperature and luminosity change?→ 半径は約 1.0 R☉ から約 58 R☉ に膨張し、表面温度は約 5750 K から約 3760 K に下がり、色は黄白色からオレンジ色になった。 The radius grew from about 1.0 R☉ to about 58 R☉, and the surface temperature dropped from about 5750 K to about 3760 K, so the color changed from yellowish white to orange. Even so, the luminosity rose from about 1 L☉ to about 600 L☉, because the effect of the larger radius (R²) outweighs the lower temperature.
Which cores appeared in the 1 M☉ star by the end, and how did it end?→ H核 → He核 → C/O核 までで、炭素より重い元素の殻や鉄核は出てこない。 Only an H core → He core → C/O core; no shells of elements heavier than carbon and no iron core appear. At 85% the outer layers are ejected as a planetary nebula, and at 95% a carbon-oxygen white dwarf of about 0.013 R☉ (about the size of Earth) is left.
For the 15 M☉ star at 80% progress, in what order were the "Layers (in → out)" listed?→ Fe核(不活性・40億K超)→ Si殻(30億K)→ O殻(20億K)→ Ne殻(12億K)→ C殻(6億K)→ He殻(1億K)→ H殻(2000万K)→ H外層。 Fe core (inert, over 4 billion K) → Si shell (3 billion K) → O shell (2 billion K) → Ne shell (1.2 billion K) → C shell (600 million K) → He shell (100 million K) → H shell (20 million K) → H outer layer. The closer to the center, the hotter the layer and the heavier the element. At 85% a Type II supernova occurs, and at 95% a neutron star about 10 km in radius is left.
When the distance was changed from 10 to 1000 light-years, what happened to the apparent brightness and the luminosity?→ 見かけの明るさは約 3.6×10⁻⁹ W/m² から約 3.6×10⁻¹³ W/m² へ1万分の1になり、等級は +2.1 等から +12.1 等へ10等暗くなった。 The apparent brightness fell from about 3.6×10⁻⁹ W/m² to about 3.6×10⁻¹³ W/m², 1/10,000 as much, and the magnitude went from +2.1 to +12.1, 10 magnitudes fainter. The luminosity (about 1.06 L☉) and the star's color and size did not change.

Think further

In a massive star, why does the adding of new fusion layers stop once an iron core forms, and why does the star then collapse?→ 鉄は原子核の中で最も安定な部類で、鉄を核融合させてもエネルギーは取り出せない。 Iron is one of the most stable nuclei, so fusing iron releases no energy. The core can no longer produce energy, the pressure that holds up the star against gravity is lost, and the iron core collapses suddenly. The rebound blows away the outer layers as a Type II supernova, leaving a neutron star at the center.
The white dwarf (95%) has a very high surface temperature of about 3.5×10⁴ K, yet its luminosity is only about 0.23 L☉. Luminosity is proportional to R²T⁴. T is about 6 times the Sun's, so T⁴ is about 1300 times larger, but the radius is only about 0.013 R☉, so R² is about 1.8×10⁻⁴ times as large. Overall it is dimmer than the Sun: with a tiny surface area, even a very hot star gives off little light in total.

The cutaway on the left exaggerates the layer thicknesses; the true small size of the core is given in the outside view as "Core radius ≈ 1/...". The progress scale spreads the stages out for easy viewing and is not proportional to real time (in reality the main sequence takes most of the lifetime and silicon burning lasts only days), and the 8 M☉ boundary and the temperatures and radii shown are typical values in a simplified model. Moving a slider pauses playback temporarily, so have students press "Pause" first when recording values.
