You Are Always at the Center: The Expanding Universe
Students understand that cosmic expansion means the space between galaxies stretches evenly, so from any galaxy the others recede at speeds proportional to their distance (v = H × d) and the universe has no special center, and that running time backward brings all galaxies together at one point (the Big Bang).

Predict (before you touch anything)
From our galaxy, every galaxy seems to be moving away. Does that mean our galaxy is at the center of the universe? What would an alien in another galaxy see?💡 ぶどうパンの生地がふくらむとき、1つのぶどうに乗って他のぶどうを見たらどう見えるか想像しよう。Imagine raisin bread dough rising. If you sat on one raisin, how would the other raisins seem to move?
As the universe expands, do galaxies themselves, and the rulers we use, get bigger too?💡 銀河の星どうしや、物差しをつくる原子どうしを結びつけている力を考えよう。Think about the forces that hold the stars of a galaxy together, and the atoms of a ruler.
Try it
Press "Pause" and set the "Time t" slider to +0.0 ×10⁸ yr (now, a = 1). Look at the lengths of the red arrows, the d and v labels next to the galaxies, and the scatter plot on the right (v [km/s] vs d [Mpc]).
Press "Random observer" a few times, or tap a galaxy on the screen, to change the observer. Each time, check the directions of the arrows and the pattern of points on the scatter plot.
Move the "Time t" slider to the right end (+100.0 ×10⁸ yr) and compare how the grid spacing, the size of the galaxy icons and the length of the "Ruler" at the bottom left change.
Move the "Time t" slider to the left to go back in time, and record a(t), the arrangement of galaxies and the value of v÷d at −70 ×10⁸ yr and at the left end (the Big Bang).
Set "Time t" back to +0.0 ×10⁸ yr, change the "Expansion rate H" slider from 70 to 140 km/s/Mpc, and see how the slope of the scatter plot and the Big Bang time t = −1/H change.
Check
Now (t = 0, H = 70 km/s/Mpc), about how fast are galaxies at 192 Mpc and 391 Mpc receding? How are the points on the scatter plot arranged?→ 192 Mpc About 13,400 km/s at 192 Mpc and about 27,400 km/s at 391 Mpc: about twice the distance gives about twice the speed. All points on the scatter plot lie on the straight line through the origin, v = 70.0·d.
When you change the observer to another galaxy, what happens to the arrows and the scatter plot?→ 新しい観測者を中心に、他のすべての銀河が放射状に遠ざかるように見える。 All the other galaxies seem to move straight away from the new observer. The distance and speed values change, but the points still lie on a line through the origin with the same slope (v = 70.0·d).
When you move time forward to +100 ×10⁸ yr, what happens to the grid, the galaxy icons and the ruler?→ a a becomes 1.716, and the grid spacing and the spacing between galaxies grow by the same ratio (about 1.7 times). But the galaxy icons and the ruler stay the same size.
With H = 70 km/s/Mpc, what happens to the galaxies when you go back in time? How long ago was the Big Bang? What changes when H is 140?→ 過去へ戻るほど a が小さくなり、−70億年で a ≈ 0.499、−139.7億年で a = 0 となって全銀河が一点に集まる(ビッグバン)。 Going back, a gets smaller: at −70 ×10⁸ yr a ≈ 0.499, and at −139.7 ×10⁸ yr a = 0 and all galaxies meet at one point (the Big Bang). With H = 140 the slope doubles to 140, and the Big Bang is only half as long ago, at −69.8 ×10⁸ yr.
Think further
Why does the same law, v = H × d, hold no matter which galaxy is the observer?→ 空間がどこでも同じ割合で伸びるので、どの2つの銀河の間の距離も同じ時間に同じ倍率で大きくなる。 Space stretches by the same ratio everywhere, so the distance between any two galaxies grows by the same factor in the same time. A farther galaxy therefore moves farther away in that time, so its speed is proportional to its distance. This is true whichever galaxy you measure from, so everyone seems to be at the center and there is no special center.
With H = 70 km/s/Mpc, why is the Big Bang about 14 billion years ago? Why does a larger H give a younger universe?→ このモデルでは各銀河が一定の速さで遠ざかるので、距離 d を速さ v = H×d で割った時間 d/v = 1/H だけ過去にはすべての銀河が同じ場所にあった。 In this model each galaxy moves away at a steady speed, so going back the time d/v = d/(H × d) = 1/H puts every galaxy at the same place. For H = 70 km/s/Mpc, 1/H is about 14 billion years. A larger H means galaxies separate faster, so the time back to the start, 1/H, is shorter.
Common misconceptions
The idea that all galaxies move away from us because we are at the center of the universe. The view is the same from every galaxy, and the expansion has no center.
The idea that when the universe expands, galaxies, the Solar System, people and rulers grow too. Things held together by gravity or electric forces do not expand; it is the space between galaxies that stretches.

This model uses steady expansion, a(t) = 1 + H·t, so each galaxy's recession speed never changes. As a result v÷d = H/a gets smaller over time (40.8 at +100 ×10⁸ yr). In the real universe the expansion rate has changed over time (today it is accelerating), so the age of the universe (about 13.8 billion years) is not exactly 1/H. Galaxies' own motions and the speed–redshift relation for very distant galaxies are not modeled.
