Galaxy Rotation and the Expanding Universe
Students understand that the Milky Way's rotation speed is almost the same at every distance from the center (a flat rotation curve), so inner stars go around faster (differential rotation), and that in the expanding universe space itself stretches evenly, so farther galaxies recede faster, following Hubble's law v = H × d.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If every star in the galaxy moves in a circle at the same speed (about 220 km/s), how does the time for one orbit differ between stars near the center and stars far out? What would happen to a straight line of stars, like an arm?💡 円周の長さは半径に比例する。 The length of a circle is proportional to its radius. If you run at the same speed, which takes less time to go around: a small circle or a large one?
As the universe expands, which recedes faster as seen from our galaxy: a nearby galaxy or a distant one?💡 ゴムひもに等間隔で印をつけて引き伸ばしたとき、端の印と隣の印がそれぞれどれだけ動くかを想像しよう。Imagine marking evenly spaced dots on a rubber band and stretching it. How far does the next dot move compared with a dot near the far end?
Try it
On the "Galaxy rotation" tab choose "Correct: flat rotation curve", press "Reset" and let it play. Watch how the orange arm marker (a straight line on the dotted line at first) changes shape over time, and record ω(2kpc), ω(14kpc) and period(8kpc) from the panel.
Press "Wrong: rigid (same ω)" and compare the correct model on the left with the wrong model on the right. Then press "Wrong: same period" and compare the arm marker and the dashed lines in the "Rotation curve" graph.
Move the "Rotation speed v0" slider to 100 km/s and 350 km/s, and see how period(8kpc) and the ω values in the panel change.
Switch to the "Expanding universe" tab and press "Reset". As a(t) grows, watch the grid spacing, the size of the galaxy dots, the arrow lengths and the colors. Check d, v and z for ① and ② (the two nearest galaxies) at the top left, and the pattern of points in the "v–d graph (Hubble diagram)".
Set the "Hubble constant H" to 40 and 100 km/s/Mpc and compare the slope of the v–d graph and the Hubble time 1/H. Finally, tap another galaxy on the screen to make it "Our galaxy" and see what happens to the v–d graph.
Check
In the correct model with v0 = 220 km/s, what are the angular speeds ω of stars at 2 kpc and 14 kpc? How does the arm marker change?→ ω(2kpc) ≈ 102.1、ω(14kpc) ≈ 15.7 km/s/kpc ω(2kpc) ≈ 102.1 and ω(14kpc) ≈ 15.7 km/s/kpc, so inner stars turn about 6.5 times faster in angle than outer ones. The inner part moves ahead, so the straight arm marker is stretched and wound up into a spiral.
In "Wrong: rigid (same ω)", what happens to the arm marker and the rotation curve? Is "Wrong: same period" any different?→ 全部の星が同じ ω ≈ 27.5 km/s/kpc で回るので、腕マーカーは直線のまま回転するだけで、回転曲線の点線は v ∝ r の右上がりの直線になる。 Every star turns with the same ω ≈ 27.5 km/s/kpc, so the arm marker just rotates and stays straight, and the dashed rotation curve is a rising straight line, v ∝ r. If the period is the same, then ω is the same too (T = 2π/ω), so "same period" moves exactly like rigid rotation.
What is the orbital period of a star at 8 kpc (near the Sun) when v0 is 100, 220 and 350 km/s?→ 約494百万年、約225百万年、約141百万年。 About 494 million years, about 225 million years and about 141 million years. The period is inversely proportional to v0. So the Solar System goes around the galaxy in a little over 200 million years.
In the expansion mode, what happens to the size of the galaxy dots and the grid spacing as a(t) grows? What shape is the v–d graph, and what are the slope and Hubble time when H = 70?→ 点の大きさは変わらず、格子の間隔(空間)だけが伸びる。 The dots stay the same size; only the grid spacing (space) stretches. On the v–d graph all points lie on a straight line through the origin with slope H = 70 km/s/Mpc, and the Hubble time 1/H ≈ 14.0 billion years. For example at a ≈ 1.47, the nearest galaxy has d ≈ 51 Mpc, v ≈ 3,600 km/s and z ≈ 0.012, and the far red galaxies have larger v.
Think further
Most of the visible stars and gas are concentrated near the center of the galaxy. Then outer stars should move slowly (like Keplerian motion, v ∝ 1/√r). The speed stays high far out because mass is thought to extend well beyond the visible stars, and its gravity keeps the outer stars moving fast. This mass gives off no light and cannot be seen, so it is called dark matter, and the flat rotation curve is one piece of evidence for it.
Why is the v–d graph still the same straight line when you tap another galaxy to make it "Our galaxy"? What does this tell us about a "center" of the universe?→ すべての銀河間の距離が同じ倍率 a(t) で伸びるので、どの銀河から見ても他の銀河は距離に比例した速さで遠ざかり、同じ v = H×d が成り立つ。 Every distance between galaxies is stretched by the same factor a(t), so from any galaxy the others recede at speeds proportional to their distance, giving the same v = H × d. Every observer seems to be at the center, so the expansion has no special center.
Common misconceptions
The idea that a galaxy turns as a whole like a record (a rigid body). In fact the rotation speed is almost constant, so the inner parts have larger angular speed: the galaxy rotates differentially.
The idea that in the expanding universe the galaxies themselves get bigger, or that galaxies fly apart through space from the center of an explosion. It is the space between galaxies that expands; galaxies keep their size and there is no special center.

The rotation curve is a schematic model, v = v0·r/√(r²+0.8²), nearly constant except near the center. The expansion mode keeps H constant (a(t) grows exponentially), and when a reaches 3 it resets to a = 1 and repeats. z ≈ v/c is the small-z approximation. Real nearby galaxies also have their own motions (the Andromeda Galaxy is approaching us), which this model does not include.
