Star Mass and Life Cycle Time-Lapse
Students understand, by watching a star's radius, surface color and inner structure change, that stellar lifetime drops steeply with mass as T = 10 billion yr × M^(−2.5), that every star swells into a giant after the main sequence, and that its final fate (white dwarf, neutron star or black hole) depends on its mass.

Predict (before you touch anything)
On the main sequence, which do you think looks bluish-white: a massive star or a low-mass star?💡 表面の色は表面温度で決まります。 The surface color is decided by the surface temperature. Recall how the color of a fire or a heating wire changes with temperature.
What do you think the Sun (1 M☉) and a 25 M☉ star will each become at the end of their lives?💡 最後に残る天体の種類は、星の質量によって分かれます。The kind of object left at the end depends on the star's mass.
Try it
Press "Pause" and then the "1M☉" button. Set the "Life progress" slider to 50% and record the surface temperature (about 5,650 K), radius, Total lifetime T (10 billion yr) and the layers listed under "Inside the star (outside → center)".
Keeping Life progress at 50%, press "0.5M☉", "3M☉", "8M☉", "20M☉" and "30M☉" in turn, and compare the star's color, surface temperature, Total lifetime T and the "Its lifetime is about 1/… of the Sun's" readout.
Go back to "1M☉" and move Life progress through 90% → 93% → 97.5% → 100%. Watch the stage change from "Red giant (He core burning + H shell burning)" to "Outer layers blown off → planetary nebula" to "White dwarf (center of the planetary nebula)", and how the radius and inner structure change.
Do the same with "20M☉" and "25M☉". Check the layers inside the "Red supergiant (onion-like layers)", the "Type II supernova (core collapse)", and the object left at the end.
Press "Play" and change "Speed" from ×1 while watching whole life cycles of stars with different masses.
Check
How did the main-sequence surface temperature, color and lifetime differ with mass?→ 質量が大きいほど高温で青白く、寿命が短かった。 The more massive the star, the hotter and more bluish-white it was, and the shorter its life. 0.5 M☉: about 4,070 K, orange, total lifetime 56.6 billion yr (about 5.7 times the Sun's). 1 M☉: about 5,650 K, 10 billion yr. 8 M☉: about 15,200 K, 55.2 million yr (about 1/181). 30 M☉: about 28,400 K, bluish-white, 2.03 million yr (about 1/4930).
In the giant stage (Life progress 93%), what happened to the radius and surface temperature?→ どの質量でも表面温度は約 3,500 K に下がって赤くなり、半径は大きく膨らんだ。 For every mass, the surface temperature dropped to about 3,500 K and the star turned red, while the radius swelled greatly: about 80 R☉ for 1 M☉, 155 R☉ for 3 M☉, 483 R☉ for 20 M☉ and 616 R☉ for 30 M☉. Heavier stars became larger.
How did the inner structure change with stage and mass?→ 主系列では「中心核:水素燃焼 (H→He)」だけ。 On the main sequence there was only "Core: hydrogen burning (H→He)". In the 1 M☉ red giant there were two burning zones: "Shell: hydrogen burning" and "Core: helium burning (He→C,O)". In red supergiants of 20 M☉ and more, layers of hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen-neon and silicon were stacked around an "Iron core", like an onion.
What did the 1 M☉, 20 M☉ and 25 M☉ stars become at the end?→ 1 M☉ は惑星状星雲を放出して白色矮星(半径約 0.0092 R☉、地球サイズ)になった。 The 1 M☉ star threw off a planetary nebula and became a white dwarf (radius about 0.0092 R☉, about the size of Earth). The 20 M☉ star became a neutron star (radius about 10 km) after a Type II supernova, and the 25 M☉ star became a black hole after a Type II supernova. The display gives: below 8 M☉ → white dwarf, 8–25 M☉ → neutron star, 25 M☉ or more → black hole.
Think further
Why does 10 times the mass mean about 1/316 of the lifetime?→ 燃料(水素)の量は質量 M に比例するが、明るさ(燃料を使う速さ)は L ∝ M^3.5 なので、寿命は M ÷ M^3.5 = M^(−2.5) に比例する。 The amount of fuel (hydrogen) is proportional to the mass M, but the brightness (how fast fuel is used) goes as L ∝ M^3.5, so the lifetime is proportional to M ÷ M^3.5 = M^(−2.5). Since 10^(−2.5) ≈ 1/316, a 10 M☉ star lives 10 billion yr × 1/316 ≈ 0.32 billion yr.
Why does a giant star become very bright even though its surface temperature goes down?→ 光度は L = 4πR²σT⁴ で、半径の2乗に比例する。 Luminosity is L = 4πR²σT⁴, so it is proportional to the square of the radius. For the 1 M☉ star the temperature falls from about 5,650 K to 3,500 K, but the radius grows about 80 times, so the surface area grows thousands of times and the star becomes brighter overall.
Common misconceptions
Heavy stars have more fuel, so they live longer." Heavy stars use fuel far faster, so a 30 M☉ star lives only about 1/4930 as long as the Sun (about 2.03 million years).
Every star ends in a supernova." Stars like the Sun (below 8 M☉) do not explode; they gently blow off their outer layers as a planetary nebula, and the core remains as a white dwarf.

The model fixes the timing: total lifetime T = 10 billion yr × M^(−2.5), main sequence 0–90%, giant 90–97% and final stage 97–100%, and it uses a giant surface temperature of about 3,500 K for every mass. Radius is on a log scale, and the layer thicknesses and the sizes of the neutron star and black hole are enlarged for clarity. The 8 M☉ and 25 M☉ boundaries are rough guides; real boundaries vary with factors such as mass loss.
