Jupiter–Saturn Great Conjunction Calendar

Students understand that the difference in ecliptic longitude Δλ between Jupiter and Saturn grows at a steady rate and completes a 360° cycle in one synodic period S (about 19.85 years from 1/S = 1/11.86 − 1/29.46), and they learn to use this to predict the year of the next great conjunction.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Jupiter (orbital period about 11.9 years) and Saturn (about 29.5 years) line up in the same direction as seen from the Sun in a "conjunction". How often do you think this happens?💡 木星が土星を「1周追い越す」のにかかる時間を考えます。 Think about how long it takes Jupiter to "lap" Saturn once. Compare what fraction of a turn each planet moves in one year.
What shape do you think the graph of Δλ = λJ − λS will have over time?💡 Δλ は 0°〜360° の範囲で表されます。 Δλ is shown in the range 0° to 360°. What happens when it goes past 360°?

Try it

In the starting state (Time speed: 1 s = 0.60 yr, Start year: 1975, Time axis width: 50 yr), watch Jupiter moving around faster than Saturn in the overhead view at the top, and how Δλ changes on the graph below.
Press "Stop at conjunction: OFF" to switch it to "Stop at conjunction: ON", and raise "Time speed" to 1 s = 1.00 yr. The animation stops at each conjunction; check that the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn are in a straight line in the overhead view and that a vertical line appears on the graph, then press "Play" to continue.
After recording two or more conjunctions, compare "Measured interval (one Δλ cycle)" with "Theory: 1/S = 1/11.86 − 1/29.46", and read the recorded conjunction years (solid) and predictions (dashed) in the list.
Move the "Start year" slider to 2010 (the current year jumps to 2010) and shrink "Time axis width" to 10 yr to look closely at how Δλ changes around the 2020 conjunction. You can press "Clear records" to erase the records and start again.

Check

What shape did the Δλ graph have?→ Δλ は一定の割合(1年に約18°)でまっすぐ増え、360° に達すると 0° に戻るのこぎり歯の形になった。 Δλ rose in a straight line at a steady rate (about 18° per year) and dropped back to 0° when it reached 360°, giving a sawtooth shape. The moment it returns to 0° (= 360°) is a conjunction, and the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn lined up in the overhead view.
What were the measured and theoretical conjunction intervals?→ 実測は 19.85年(誤差 0.00%)、理論値も S = 1/(1/11.86 − 1/29.46) = 19.85年で一致した。The measured value was 19.85 yr (error 0.00%), and the theory S = 1/(1/11.86 − 1/29.46) = 19.85 yr matched.
How were the recorded conjunction years spaced? When was the next conjunction predicted?→ 1981.27(1981年4月)、2001.12(2001年2月)、2020.97(2020年12月)、2040.82(2040年10月)と約19.85年ごとに並んだ。 They were 1981.27 (Apr 1981), 2001.12 (Feb 2001), 2020.97 (Dec 2020) and 2040.82 (Oct 2040), spaced about 19.85 years apart. The great conjunction of December 2020 was reproduced, and the next after 2040 was predicted at 2060.67 (Sep 2060).

Think further

Why can the synodic period be found from 1/S = 1/11.86 − 1/29.46?→ 木星は1年に 1/11.86 周、土星は 1/29.46 周進むので、Δλ は1年に (1/11.86 − 1/29.46) 周ずつ増える。 Jupiter moves 1/11.86 of a turn per year and Saturn 1/29.46, so Δλ grows by (1/11.86 − 1/29.46) of a turn each year. The synodic period is the time for Δλ to grow by exactly one turn (360°), so S × (1/11.86 − 1/29.46) = 1. This is the same idea as dividing 360° by the graph's slope dΔλ/dt, which gives 19.85 yr.
In this model the conjunction around 2000 came out as February 2001, but the real one was in May 2000. The model uses circular orbits at constant speed and is matched to the great conjunction of 21 December 2020. Real orbits are slightly elliptical and planets change speed along them, so the real intervals are not exactly 19.85 years each time, and conjunctions farther from the reference date drift more.

The model uses circular orbits at constant speed, matched so that both ecliptic longitudes agree at the great conjunction of 21 December 2020, so conjunctions far from that date drift from reality (the real 2000 conjunction was in May 2000). Conjunctions are judged by position as seen from the Sun (heliocentric longitude), so the timing differs slightly from the apparent close approach seen in Earth's sky. Note that moving "Start year" also moves the current year to that year.
