Deep Water Age & Oxygen Tracer
Students understand that deep water travels around the world ocean very slowly (less than 1 cm/s), taking about 1,000–2,000 years, and that its dissolved oxygen keeps falling with no resupply on the way, so the oldest deep water, in the North Pacific, has the least oxygen.

Predict (before you touch anything)
How many years do you think it takes for deep water that sinks in the North Atlantic to travel around the world ocean (about 46,000 km) and come back to the surface?💡 表層の海流は速いところで秒速1 m ほどだが、深層の流れはそれよりずっと遅い。 Fast surface currents move at about 1 m per second, but deep currents are much slower. Pay attention to the units of speed.
How does the amount of oxygen dissolved in deep water change during its journey, and why?💡 酸素は海面で大気から溶けこむ。 Oxygen dissolves into the sea from the air at the surface. Think about the lack of light in the deep sea and what happens to the remains of organisms that sink from above.
Try it
Press "Reset" and then "Play". Watch the parcel sink in the North Atlantic, travel through the deep ocean, rise at "Upwelling" in the Pacific and return along the surface. Watch "Age", "Oxygen", "Distance" and "Now in" and the graph below.
With the starting setting ("Deep current v" 0.10 cm/s), record the number of years for the deep loop shown in the formula box and the "Lowest" value on the graph.
Press "Pause", move the "Deep current v" slider to 0.05, 0.20 and 0.30 cm/s, and make a table of how the years for one loop change.
Set "Deep current v" back to 0.10 cm/s, then change "Oxygen use rate" and "Starting dissolved oxygen" and see how the slope of the graph and the lowest value in the North Pacific change (for example 100 μmol/(L·1000 yr) and 150 μmol/L).
Check
At 0.10 cm/s, how many years does the deep loop take? How many kilometres does the water move in one year?→ 約1,460年。 About 1,460 years. Since 1 cm/s ≈ 315 km/yr, 0.10 cm/s is only about 31.5 km per year (1.0 mm/s). 46,000 km ÷ 31.5 km/yr ≈ 1,460 years.
What happens to the loop time at 0.05 cm/s, 0.20 cm/s and 0.30 cm/s?→ 0.05 cm/s で約2,921年、0.20 cm/s で約730年、0.30 cm/s で約487年。 About 2,921 years at 0.05 cm/s, about 730 years at 0.20 cm/s and about 487 years at 0.30 cm/s. Doubling the speed halves the time: the time is inversely proportional to the speed.
With the starting settings, in which region is the dissolved oxygen lowest, and what is the value?→ 深層の旅の終わりにあたる北太平洋の深層(最も古い水)で最低となり、約212 μmol/L(300 − 60×1.46)。 It is lowest in the North Pacific deep water at the end of the deep journey (the oldest water), about 212 μmol/L (300 − 60 × 1.46). On the surface return the oxygen recovers to its starting value.
Set "Oxygen use rate" to 100 μmol/(L·1000 yr) and "Starting dissolved oxygen" to 150 μmol/L, then lower the speed to 0.05 cm/s. What does the graph show?→ 流速0.10 cm/s では最低値が約4 μmol/L まで下がる。 At 0.10 cm/s the lowest value falls to about 4 μmol/L. At 0.05 cm/s the line reaches 0 after about 1,500 years and stays at 0 after that (lowest value 0 μmol/L).
Think further
Why does North Pacific deep water have less oxygen than North Atlantic deep water? Explain using the idea of "water age".→ 深層水は海面で大気と接していたときに酸素を受け取り、沈み込んだ後は補給されない。 Deep water takes up oxygen while it is in contact with the air at the surface, and gets no more after it sinks. In the deep sea, oxygen keeps being used up as sinking organic matter is decomposed (respiration), so the longer since the water sank (its age), the less oxygen it has. North Pacific deep water is farthest from the sinking regions and is the oldest water, so it has the least oxygen.
If global warming weakened sinking in the North Atlantic and the deep flow became slower, what would you expect to happen to the oxygen in deep water?→ 流れが遅いと同じ距離を進むのにより長い年数がかかり、その間ずっと酸素が消費されるので、深層水の酸素はさらに少なくなる。 A slower flow takes more years to cover the same distance, and oxygen is used up the whole time, so deep water would have even less oxygen. In the simulation, lowering the speed lowers the minimum value.
Common misconceptions
The idea that deep water flows about as fast as surface currents. Deep flow is around 0.1 cm/s (1 mm/s), two to three orders of magnitude slower than surface currents (10–100 cm/s), so one loop takes more than a thousand years.
The idea that oxygen does not decrease in the deep sea because nothing lives there. Even in the deep sea, oxygen is used to break down sinking organic matter, and since there is no resupply, older water has less oxygen.

The route is simplified to a single 46,000 km path, and oxygen is assumed to fall at a constant rate (stopping at 0). The surface return is set at 10 cm/s (about 7 years), and oxygen recovers at the surface. Antarctic Bottom Water sinking is only drawn, not tracked as a separate water mass. It is worth adding that real deep-water ages are estimated with tracers such as radiocarbon (¹⁴C).
