Brine Rejection and Deep Water Formation Simulator
Students understand that when seawater freezes in polar seas, the nearly fresh sea ice rejects salt, making the water beneath it saltier and denser so that it sinks deep and forms deep water, and that cooling alone raises the density only a little.

Predict (before you touch anything)
At what temperature do you think seawater (salinity about 34 psu) starts to freeze? And do you think the sea ice that forms is salty?💡 冬の道路に塩(凍結防止剤)をまく理由を思い出しましょう。Think about why salt is spread on roads in winter.
In polar seas, do you think surface water becomes heavy enough to sink deep mainly because it is cooled, or mainly because it becomes saltier?💡 画面の数値表示には、密度の変化を水温によるものと塩分によるものに分けて示す項目があります。The readout on screen splits the change in density into a part due to temperature and a part due to salinity.
Try it
Start with the default settings (Air temp -20 ℃, Initial salinity 34.3 psu, Speed ×1). Watch the sea ice thicken, the "Under ice S" value, the "↓Brine out" label, and the temperature and salinity lines in the "Depth profile" on the right. Also read the "Freezing pt" value in the readout.
Press the "Speed ×1" button twice to get "Speed ×12" and run for about 500 days. Compare the "Sink depth", "Deep inflow", the change in the water's color (density), and the values of "Δρ temp" and "Δρ salt".
Return to "Speed ×1", then raise "Air temp" to +5 ℃. Watch what is shown while the ice melts ("Melting→fresh water, S↓"), how Surface S and Surface ρ change, and what happens to the sinking.
Set "Air temp" to -1 ℃, press "Reset", and run at "Speed ×12". Check whether sea ice forms and whether any sinking happens.
Set "Air temp" back to -20 ℃ and "Initial salinity" to 32.0 psu (changing it resets the run). Compare how deep the surface water sinks with the 34.3 psu case.
Check
At what temperature did the seawater start to freeze? What was the salinity of the sea ice?→ 凝固点は約 -1.9 ℃(塩分 34.3 psu で -1.89 ℃)で、0 ℃では凍らない。 The freezing point was about -1.9 ℃ (-1.89 ℃ at 34.3 psu); seawater does not freeze at 0 ℃. The sea ice had S≈5, much lower than seawater (about 34), so it is almost fresh.
As freezing continued, what happened to the water just under the ice and in the deep layer?→ 氷直下の塩分が上がり(500 日ほどで約 34.8)、表層密度が増して、重くなった水が沈み込んだ。 The salinity under the ice rose (to about 34.8 after roughly 500 days), the surface density increased, and the heavier water sank. The sink depth reached about 1000 m (near the bottom), deep inflow was about 50 m/day, and the whole section turned darker (denser).
Which contributed more to the increase in density: "Δρ temp" or "Δρ salt"?→ 塩分の効果がずっと大きい。 Salinity, by far. After continued freezing, Δρ temp stayed at about +0.02 kg/m³ while Δρ salt reached about +0.4 to +0.6 kg/m³.
What happened to the sinking when the air temperature was set to +5 ℃ or to -1 ℃?→ +5 ℃では海氷が融けて淡水が加わり、表層の塩分と密度が下がって(表層ρ 約 1028.0 → 約 1027.4)、沈み込みが止まった。 At +5 ℃ the ice melted and added fresh water, so surface salinity and density dropped (Surface ρ from about 1028.0 to about 1027.4) and the sinking stopped. At -1 ℃ the air is warmer than the freezing point, so no ice formed, the surface density barely increased, and no sinking happened.
Think further
With an initial salinity of 32.0 psu, the sinking was shallower and took much longer to reach the deep layer than with 34.3 psu. The surface water is fresher and lighter than the water below (about 34.6 psu), so a lot of freezing and brine rejection is needed before it becomes as dense as the water beneath. Until then it sinks only to shallow depths (about 100–150 m at first). The fresher and lighter the surface, the more the stable layering blocks deep water formation.
If global warming reduces polar sea ice and adds meltwater from ice sheets to the ocean, how might this affect deep water formation and the deep ocean circulation?→ 結氷が減れば塩排出が減り、融け水(淡水)が加われば表層の塩分と密度が下がるので、表層水が沈みにくくなり深層水の形成が弱まると考えられる。 Less freezing means less brine rejection, and added meltwater lowers surface salinity and density, so surface water sinks less easily and deep water formation weakens. Because this sinking drives the global deep (thermohaline) circulation, the circulation could slow, affecting heat transport and climate.
Common misconceptions
Students often think seawater freezes at 0 ℃, but because it contains salt its freezing point is lower, about -1.9 ℃.
Students often think polar water sinks simply because it is cold, but near the freezing point cooling raises density only slightly; the main cause of deep sinking is the salinity increase from brine rejection.

The model treats only one 1000 m water column in a polar sea, uses a simplified equation of state for density, and assumes the wind carries away a fixed share of the ice (a polynya). Horizontal currents, basin-wide circulation and seasons are not included, and time is heavily fast-forwarded (at Speed ×12, hundreds of days pass in tens of seconds). Changing Initial salinity (unlike Air temp) restarts the run.
