Low Pressure and the Coriolis Force: How a Cyclone Forms

Low Pressure and the Coriolis Force: How a Cyclone Forms 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that air set moving by the pressure gradient force toward a low, and acted on by the Coriolis force at right angles to its velocity (to the right in the Northern Hemisphere) and by surface friction, spirals into the center counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, and that because the Coriolis force is proportional to sinφ, vortices hardly form near the equator.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Around a low in the Northern Hemisphere, which way do you think the air will swirl: clockwise or counterclockwise? What about the Southern Hemisphere?💡 空気はまず中心へ向かって動き出します。 The air first starts moving toward the center. In the Northern Hemisphere, moving objects are deflected to the right of their motion.
If a similar low sat near the equator, how do you think the air would flow?💡 コリオリの力の大きさを表す f = 2Ω sinφ で、φ が 0° に近いと f はどうなるでしょうか。In f = 2Ω sinφ, which sets the size of the Coriolis force, what happens to f when φ is close to 0°?

In the starting state ("Northern", "Latitude φ" 45°N, "Pressure diff. ΔP" 20 hPa), check the rotation from the air parcel paths and the arrow at the center, and read "Rotation", "Converging" and "Inflow angle". On the sample parcels, see which way the red "Coriolis force" points relative to the white "Velocity v", and where the blue "Pressure gradient force (to center)" points.
Press the "Southern" button and check how the rotation, the sign of f, and the direction of the Coriolis arrow change. Then switch back to "Northern".
Move the "Latitude φ" slider to 90°N → 10°N → 3°N → 0°N and record f, the "Rotation" readout, and the "Inflow angle".
Return "Latitude φ" to 45°N, set "Pressure diff. ΔP" to 50 hPa and then 4 hPa, and observe how the center pressure, the flow speed and the inflow angle change.

Check

What was the rotation at 45°N in the Northern Hemisphere and at 45°S in the Southern Hemisphere?→ 北半球では「反時計回り」、南半球では「時計回り」になった。 It was "counterclockwise" in the Northern Hemisphere and "clockwise" in the Southern Hemisphere. f changed sign from 1.031×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹ to −1.031×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹, and the Coriolis force pointed to the right of the motion in the north and to the left in the south.
On the sample parcels, which way did the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force point?→ 青の気圧傾度力は常に中心(低圧部)を向き、赤のコリオリの力は白の速度 v に垂直で、北半球では進行方向の右向きだった。 The blue pressure gradient force always pointed to the center (the low), and the red Coriolis force was at right angles to the white velocity v, pointing to the right of the motion in the Northern Hemisphere. The gray friction force acted opposite to the velocity.
As the latitude was lowered, how did f and the inflow angle change?→ 90°N At 90°N, f = 1.458×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹ with an inflow angle of 80°; at 45°N, 1.031×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹ and 77°; at 10°N, 0.253×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹ and 30° ("Weak vortex"); at 3°N, 0.076×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹ and 5°; and at 0°N, f = 0 and 0°. At 3°N and below the readout said "Flows almost straight into the center (no vortex)" and the paths became radial.
When a vortex formed, did the air only circle around the center?→ 回るだけではなかった。 No. The readout showed "Converging: yes" and the inflow angle stayed below 90° (about 77° at 45°N), so the air spiraled into the center. This is because friction slows the wind, so the Coriolis force cannot fully balance the pressure gradient force.

Think further

Typhoons (tropical cyclones) almost never form within about 5° of the equator. Use the simulation to explain why.→ コリオリの力は f = 2Ω sinφ に比例し、赤道付近では f がほぼ 0 になる。 The Coriolis force is proportional to f = 2Ω sinφ, and f is almost zero near the equator. In the simulation, at 3°N the inflow angle was only about 5° and the air went almost straight to the center without forming a vortex. Without rotation, a swirling low cannot develop.
When air near the ground converges into a low, where does that air go? How is this related to the weather?→ 中心に集まった空気は行き場を失って上昇する。 The converging air has nowhere to go but up. Rising air expands and cools, and water vapor condenses into clouds, so the area near the center of a low tends to be cloudy or rainy. (The rising motion is not shown in this flat simulation.)

The f shown on screen uses Earth's real value (Ω = 7.292×10⁻⁵ s⁻¹), but the parcel motion is computed in a dimensionless model, so rotation strength and time speed differ from reality. Friction is a simple force proportional to velocity, and rising air and height differences are not modeled. The center pressure is shown as the ambient 1012 hPa minus ΔP.
