Thermohaline Circulation Simulator | Deep Ocean Currents
Students understand that seawater becomes denser as it gets colder and saltier, and that only when polar surface water becomes heavier than the water below does it sink, flow through the deep ocean to low latitudes and rise back up, forming a thermohaline circulation that takes 1,000 years or more per loop.

Predict (before you touch anything)
For polar surface water to sink and become deep water, should its temperature and its salinity each be high or low?💡 水が沈むのは、まわりの水より「重い(密度が大きい)」ときです。 Water sinks when it is heavier (denser) than the water around it. How do temperature and the amount of dissolved salt affect density?
How long do you think it takes for deep water to come back to the surface after it sinks?💡 深層の流れは表層の海流に比べてずっと遅いことを手がかりにしましょう。Use the clue that deep currents are much slower than surface currents.
Try it
In the starting state ("Surface temp. T" 0.0 ℃, "Surface salinity S" 35.0 ‰), compare "Surface density σt = 28.00" with "Deep water σt = 27.80 (fixed)". Check that the result reads "Surface > deep → water sinks" and that particles travel "Sinking ↓" → along the sea floor → "Upwelling ↑" → back along the surface.
Raise the "Surface temp. T" slider to 1.0 ℃ and then to 10.0 ℃, and record the surface density, the result, and what happens to the flow in the cross-section.
Keep "Surface temp. T" at 4.0 ℃ and raise "Surface salinity S" to 37.0 ‰. Check whether sinking starts again.
With "Surface temp. T" at 0.0 ℃, lower "Surface salinity S" to 33.0 ‰ (like melting ice or a large inflow of fresh water) and check the result. Finally press "Reset" to return to the start.
Check
At S = 35.0 ‰, what happened to the surface density and the flow as T went 0.0 ℃ → 1.0 ℃ → 10.0 ℃?→ σt σt fell from 28.00 to 27.80 to 26.00. At 1.0 ℃ it equaled the deep value of 27.80, the result became "Surface ≤ deep → stable layers (no sinking)", the labels changed to "Sinking (none)" and "Upwelling (none)", and the circulation stopped. The warmer the water, the lower its density.
What happened when S was set to 37.0 ‰ at T = 4.0 ℃?→ 表層密度は σt = 27.90 となり、下層の 27.80 を超えたので「沈み込み発生」となり循環が再開した。 The surface density became σt = 27.90, greater than the deep 27.80, so the result became "water sinks" and the circulation restarted. Higher salinity means higher density, so even slightly warmer water can sink.
What happened when S was lowered to 33.0 ‰ while T stayed at 0.0 ℃?→ σt = 27.30 となり下層より軽くなったので、冷たい水でも沈み込まず安定成層になった。 σt became 27.30, lighter than the deep water, so even cold water did not sink and the layers stayed stable. If fresh water lowers the salinity, sinking can stop.
How long does one loop of the circulation take, according to the screen?→ 「循環1周の目安:約1000年以上」と表示され、「周回(アニメ上)」の表示にも「実際は1周 約1000年以上」と書かれている。 It shows "One full loop takes about 1,000+ years", and the "Laps (animation)" line also says "one real lap takes 1,000+ years". The animation is far faster than reality.
Think further
Why does surface water tend to become heavy in polar seas where sea ice forms, or in regions with strong evaporation?→ どちらも水だけが抜けて塩が残るので、表層の塩分が上がり密度が大きくなるから。 In both cases water leaves while salt stays behind, so surface salinity rises and density increases. In polar seas the low temperature also raises density. In the simulation, lowering T or raising S increased σt, and sinking began once it exceeded 27.80.
If global warming heats the North Atlantic surface and meltwater from ice sheets flows in, what might happen to the thermohaline circulation?→ 水温上昇と塩分低下の両方で表層密度が小さくなるため、沈み込みが弱まり、循環が弱まる(止まる)おそれがある。 Both warming and lower salinity reduce surface density, so sinking could weaken and the circulation could slow down or stop. In the simulation, raising T or lowering S both switched the result to "stable layers" and the flow stopped.
Common misconceptions
Deep ocean water is also moved by the wind." Surface currents are mainly wind-driven, but the deep circulation is driven by density differences due to temperature and salinity.
Cold water always sinks." In the simulation, even at 0 ℃ the water does not sink when salinity is 33.0 ‰. Density depends on both temperature and salinity.

Density is simplified to the linear formula σt = 28.0 − 0.20×T + 0.35×(S − 35.0), and the deep water is fixed at σt 27.80. Real seawater density depends on temperature non-linearly, and temperature matters less at low temperatures. The cross-section is a schematic single loop from the pole to low latitudes, and the animation's loop speed is very different from the real 1,000+ years.
