Global Atmospheric Circulation and the Coriolis Force – Simulator

Global Atmospheric Circulation and the Coriolis Force – Simulator 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that on the rotating Earth, moving air feels a Coriolis force that, in the Northern Hemisphere, acts to the right of its motion and changes only its direction, which is why surface winds heading toward the equator become the northeast trade winds and winds heading poleward become the westerlies.

Predict (before you touch anything)

An air parcel is launched from high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere straight toward the equator (due south). How do you think its path looks to someone on the ground who rotates with the Earth?💡 空気が進んでいる間にも、その下の地面は自転によって回り続けています。While the air is moving, the ground beneath it keeps turning with the Earth's rotation.
If the Earth spun faster, how do you think the bending of the air's path would change? What if the Earth did not rotate at all?💡 地面が回る速さと、空気の進路のずれ方の関係を考えましょう。Think about how the speed at which the ground turns relates to how far the path is shifted.

Try it

With the default settings (Rotation rate ω = 1.00 × Earth, Initial speed 80 m/s), watch the "Path seen from above the North Pole" view. Look at the red path, the white dashed line (path if ω=0), and the "|v|" and "Radius v/f" values in the readout below.
Set "Rotation rate ω" to 0 and check that the parcel travels straight toward the equator along the dashed line (moving a slider restarts the run).
Set "Rotation rate ω" to 2.00 × Earth and compare the radius value and the size of the looping path with the ω = 1.00 run.
Return ω to 1.00, set "Initial speed" to 20 m/s, and see how the radius changes. Also check whether the |v| value changes while the parcel is moving.
In the left "Cross-section of the Earth" view (press "Cross-section" to enlarge it), read the Hadley cell (rising at the equator, sinking at 30°) and the directions of the arrows for the NE trade winds, SE trade winds and Westerlies.

Check

With ω = 1.00 × Earth, which way did the parcel launched toward the equator turn relative to its direction of motion?→ 進行方向の右(赤道へ向かう場合は西)へ曲がり続け、ぐるりと回る円に近い軌跡を描いた。 It kept turning to the right of its motion (toward the west when heading for the equator), tracing a nearly circular looping path. At about 73°N the radius was about 570 km.
How did the path differ between ω = 0 and ω = 2.00 × Earth?→ ω = 0 では曲率半径が「∞(直進)」となり、破線どおりまっすぐ赤道まで進んだ。 With ω = 0 the radius showed "∞ (straight)" and the parcel went straight to the equator along the dashed line. With ω = 2.00 the radius was about 290 km, roughly half that at ω = 1.00, so it turned more sharply in a smaller loop.
When the initial speed was lowered from 80 m/s to 20 m/s, what happened to the radius? Did the speed |v| change while the parcel moved?→ 曲率半径は約 145 km と小さくなった(速さに比例し、約 1/4)。 The radius shrank to about 145 km (it is proportional to speed, so about 1/4). |v| was shown as "(constant)" and stayed at 20.0 m/s. The Coriolis force changes only the direction, not the speed.
In the cross-section, which way do the surface winds blow between 0° and 30°N, and between 30°N and 60°N?→ 0°〜30° では北東から南西へ向かう北東貿易風、30°〜60° では西から東へ(やや北向きに)吹く偏西風。 Between 0° and 30°N the NE trade winds blow from the northeast toward the southwest; between 30°N and 60°N the westerlies blow from west to east (slightly poleward). Between 0° and 30°S are the SE trade winds.

Think further

Winds blowing from the 30° high-pressure belt toward the equator and toward high latitudes both turn right, so why does one become an easterly (the trade winds) and the other a westerly (the westerlies)?→ 北半球で南(赤道)へ向かう風の右は西なので、風は西向きに曲げられ「東から吹く風」、つまり北東貿易風になる。 In the Northern Hemisphere, for wind moving south (toward the equator) "right" means west, so it is bent westward and blows from the east: the northeast trade winds. For wind moving north (toward high latitudes) "right" means east, so it is bent eastward and blows from the west: the westerlies. The same rightward force gives opposite wind directions because the air is moving in opposite directions.
In this simulation the air traces circles even though no real push is acting on it. Seen from space outside the Earth, is the air really curving?→ 宇宙(自転しない座標系)から見れば、空気は慣性でほぼまっすぐ進もうとしているだけで、その下で地球が回っている。 From space (a non-rotating frame) the air is essentially just continuing by inertia while the Earth turns beneath it. To someone rotating with the Earth the path appears to bend, and the apparent force that accounts for this is the Coriolis force. That is why there is no bending when ω = 0 (no rotation).

The path view launches a parcel from 70°N toward the equator in a frame rotating with the Earth, with only the Coriolis force (f = 2ω sinφ) acting; pressure-gradient force and friction are left out, so the parcel loops in circles (inertial oscillation) instead of blowing steadily like real wind. The left cross-section is a schematic with an exaggerated air layer, showing the Hadley, Ferrel and polar cells and the wind directions. Time runs fast-forward.
