Water Pressure in a Tank with Holes: All Directions and Depth

Water Pressure in a Tank with Holes: All Directions and Depth 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand, from the speed and range of water jets out of holes, that water pressure acts in all directions and becomes larger the deeper you go below the surface.

Predict (before you touch anything)

A container full of water has three holes at different heights in its side. Which hole will shoot water out most strongly?💡 それぞれの穴の上に、どれだけの水がのっているかを考えよう。Think about how much water is above each hole.
As time passes and the water level drops, how will the jets change?💡 水面から穴までの深さがどう変わるかに注目しよう。Pay attention to how the depth from the surface to each hole changes.

Try it

Set "Lowest hole height" to 4 cm, "Starting water level" to 27 cm and "Number of holes" to 3, then press "↺ Reset". Record the range of the three jets (the ①②③ values on the floor) right away.
Watch the water level fall. Press "⏸ Pause" partway and read the depth and range of each hole, then press "▶ Start" to continue.
Check what happens to holes ③ and ② when the water level falls below them.
Look at the direction and length of the yellow and red arrows drawn on the bottom, the sides and inside the holes.
Set "Number of holes" to 1, change "Lowest hole height" or "Starting water level", press "↺ Reset", and check how depth and range are related.

Check

At a water level of about 26 cm, what are the approximate depth and range for holes ①, ② and ③?→ 穴①(高さ4 cm)深さ約22 cm・飛距離約48 cm、穴②(高さ11 cm)深さ約15 cm・約45 cm、穴③(高さ18 cm)深さ約8 cm・約36 cm。 Hole ① (4 cm high): depth about 22 cm, range about 48 cm; hole ② (11 cm): about 15 cm, 45 cm; hole ③ (18 cm): about 8 cm, 36 cm. The deeper the hole, the farther the water goes.
How does the range change as the water level falls?→ すべての穴で短くなる。 It becomes shorter for every hole. For example, at a level of about 15 cm, hole ① reaches about 34 cm and hole ② about 24 cm.
What happens to a hole once the water level is below it?→ 水が出なくなる(「水面より上→出ない」と表示され、穴に × がつく)。No water comes out (the display says "above the water → no flow" and the hole is marked with ×).
In what direction does the water leave each hole, and what path does it follow afterward?→ 容器の壁に垂直な向き(水平)に飛び出し、そのあと重力で下に曲がって放物線をえがいて床に落ちる。It leaves perpendicular to the container wall (horizontally), then curves downward under gravity in a parabola and lands on the floor.

Think further

Why does water shoot out faster from deeper holes?→ 水圧は、その場所より上にある水の重さによって生じるので、深いほど大きい。 Water pressure comes from the weight of the water above that point, so it is larger at greater depth. The larger the pressure pushing the water out at the hole, the faster the water comes out.
Why are dam walls built thicker at the bottom than at the top?→ 深いところほど水圧が大きく、壁を横向きに強く押すから。 Because water pressure is larger at greater depth and pushes harder sideways on the wall. Water pressure acts on the sides, not only on the bottom.

The jet speed is calculated with Torricelli's law (v = √(2gd)); at this level it is enough to say qualitatively that deeper means higher pressure and a stronger jet. The container sits on a 22 cm stand, which is why the lowest hole always reaches farthest; without a stand, a hole near the floor has less time to fall and may not have the longest range. The jets are shown in slow motion, and hole size, viscosity and air resistance are ignored.
