Lotka–Volterra Predator–Prey Model

Students understand that in the Lotka–Volterra model prey and predator populations rise and fall repeatedly with the same period, that the predator peak lags behind the prey peak, and that in the phase plane this appears as a closed orbit around the equilibrium point.

Predict (before you touch anything)

On an island with only rabbits (prey) and foxes (predators), how do you think the number of foxes changes after the rabbits increase? Is the fox population largest at the same time as the rabbit population?💡 キツネが子を増やすには、まずえさを食べる必要があります。 Foxes need to eat before they can raise more young. Think about the order in which things happen after food becomes plentiful.
If you raise the prey growth rate r (how fast the prey multiplies), which population do you think becomes larger on average in the long run: the prey or the predators?💡 増えた被食者は、そのあと誰に食べられるでしょうか。Who ends up eating the extra prey?

Try it

Start with the default settings (Initial prey N0 = 80, Initial predators P0 = 20, Prey growth rate r = 0.15 /hour) and let it run for 30–40 seconds. In the "Time series" graph, watch the peaks of the green "Prey N" and red "Predator P" curves and the yellow "Lag" bar. Use "Pause" to freeze it if needed.
In the "Phase plane (N, P)" panel, check that the white dot keeps tracing the same closed curve lap after lap, around the × mark labeled "Equilibrium (60, 15)". In the text below the sliders, read the values of "Period T≈" and "Prey peak → predator peak Δt=".
Raise "Prey growth rate r" to 0.30 and check that the equilibrium × moves to (60, 30) and the period T gets shorter, from about 30 hours to about 21 hours (moving a slider restarts the run).
Set r back to 0.15, then set "Initial prey N0" to 60 and "Initial predators P0" to 15, and check that the populations do not change at all (the run sits on the equilibrium).
Next set N0 = 120 and P0 = 5, far from the equilibrium, and compare the size of the phase-plane orbit and the height of the peaks in the time series (prey up to about 145, predators up to about 48) with the default run.

Check

In the time series, which population reaches its peak first: prey or predators? By how much is the other one delayed?→ 被食者が先にピークを迎え、捕食者はそのあとでピークになる。 The prey peaks first and the predators peak afterwards. In the default run Δt is about 6 hours, about 0.2 of the roughly 30-hour period. For small swings near the equilibrium the lag is about 1/4 period, and the bigger the swing, the smaller the lag as a fraction of the period (about 0.14 periods with N0 = 120, P0 = 5).
Did the orbit in the phase plane grow or shrink as it went round?→ 大きくも小さくもならず、同じ閉じた曲線を何周もたどる。 Neither. It follows the same closed curve lap after lap. The displayed "Drift of conserved V" is around 10⁻¹⁰ %, essentially zero, confirming a closed orbit.
When r was raised from 0.15 to 0.30, how did the equilibrium point change?→ 平衡点は (60, 15) から (60, 30) に移った。 It moved from (60, 15) to (60, 30). The prey equilibrium N* = m/b = 60 stayed the same, while the predator equilibrium P* = r/a doubled.
How did the size of the oscillation differ between starting at N0 = 60, P0 = 15 and starting at N0 = 120, P0 = 5?→ N0 = 60、P0 = 15 は平衡点そのものなので個体数は一定で振動しない。 N0 = 60, P0 = 15 is exactly the equilibrium, so the populations stay constant and do not oscillate. N0 = 120, P0 = 5 is far from the equilibrium, so the swings are large (prey about 17 to 145, predators about 2 to 48) and the phase-plane orbit is much bigger.

Think further

Why does the predator peak come after the prey peak? Include what makes the prey start to decline.→ 被食者が多い間は捕食者がえさを十分に得て増え続ける。 While prey are plentiful, predators get enough food and keep increasing. As predators increase, more prey are eaten and the prey begin to decline. Predators keep increasing until prey fall below N* = 60 and food runs short, so the predator peak comes later. Then the predators decline, the prey recover, and the cycle repeats.
Raising r (how fast the prey multiplies) increased the average number of predators, not prey. What does this suggest about adding more food to a real ecosystem?→ このモデルでは、被食者の平衡個体数 N* = m/b は捕食者の死亡率と捕食の効率だけで決まり、r には左右されない。 In this model the prey equilibrium N* = m/b is set only by the predator death rate and how efficiently predators turn prey into offspring; it does not depend on r. The extra prey production feeds more predators, so the predator equilibrium P* = r/a rises. In real ecosystems, enriching a lower trophic level can likewise boost the top predators without raising prey numbers much (though real systems also have carrying capacity and other factors).

This is the classic Lotka–Volterra model with no carrying capacity (no density dependence). The constants a = 0.01, m = 0.3, b = 0.005 are fixed and populations are treated as continuous numbers, so the oscillations never damp out and chance extinction cannot happen. In the field view each ● stands for 2 prey and each ▲ for 1 predator, with display caps (80 ● and 40 ▲). Real field data (e.g. lynx and snowshoe hare) involve other factors, so discussing how they differ from the model works well.
