Pressure p = F/S Simulator: Sinking into Sand
Students understand that pressure is the force acting perpendicular to a surface divided by the area it acts on (p = F/S), so the same force on a larger area gives a smaller pressure and a shallower dent.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you put the same load on sand, what happens to the depth of the dent when the contact area is made larger?💡 雪の上をスキー板で歩くときと、ふつうの靴で歩くときを思い出そう。Think about walking on snow in skis compared with ordinary shoes.
If you double the force F and also double the contact area S, how will the dent depth compare with before?💡 1 cm² あたりにかかる力を考えてみよう。Think about the force acting on each 1 cm² of the surface.
Try it
With the starting values (Force F = 100 N, Area S = 100 cm²), press "Start (sink the load)". Record the depth line that is left and the pressure p.
Set Force F to 200 N and Area S to 200 cm², press "Start (sink the load)", and compare with the earlier depth line.
Keep Force F at 200 N, set Area S to 100 cm², and press "Start (sink the load)".
Set Force F to 100 N and Area S to 400 cm², press "Start (sink the load)", and watch the width of the base and the dent depth.
Read the formula under the panel (p = F ÷ S = … N ÷ … m²) and check that cm² is converted into m². Finally press "Reset" to return to the start.
Check
What is the pressure when F = 100 N and S = 100 cm²?→ 10,000 Pa。100 cm² = 0.0100 m² なので、100 N ÷ 0.0100 m² = 10,000 Pa。10,000 Pa. Since 100 cm² = 0.0100 m², 100 N ÷ 0.0100 m² = 10,000 Pa.
How did the dent for F = 200 N, S = 200 cm² compare with the dent for F = 100 N, S = 100 cm²?→ 同じ深さになった。 It sank to the same depth. Both give 10,000 Pa, so they share one depth line (its label lists F100/S100 and F200/S200).
What were the pressure and the dent depth for F = 200 N, S = 100 cm²?→ 圧力は 20,000 Pa で、10,000 Pa のときの2倍の深さまで沈んだ(めり込み深さの表示も 10% から 20% になる)。The pressure was 20,000 Pa, and it sank twice as deep as at 10,000 Pa (the depth readout goes from 10% to 20%).
With F = 100 N and S = 400 cm², what happened to the width of the base and the dent?→ 台の接地幅が広がり、圧力は 2,500 Pa になって、めり込みは 10,000 Pa のときの4分の1の浅さになった。The base became wider, the pressure fell to 2,500 Pa, and the dent was only a quarter as deep as at 10,000 Pa.
Think further
Why do skis or snowshoes stop you from sinking into snow?→ 体重(雪をおす力)は変わらないが、接地面積が大きくなるので圧力 p = F/S が小さくなり、めり込みが浅くなるから。Your weight (the force on the snow) stays the same, but the contact area becomes larger, so the pressure p = F/S becomes smaller and you sink less.
Why are knife edges and thumbtack points sharp? Explain using what you saw in the simulation.→ 力がはたらく面積を非常に小さくすると、小さな力でも圧力が大きくなり、深くめり込む(食い込む)から。 Making the area very small makes the pressure large even with a small force, so the point digs in deeply. In the simulation too, the smaller S is, the deeper the load sinks.
Common misconceptions
Thinking that heavier things always sink deeper. → The dent depends on pressure, the force divided by the area, not on force alone (changing F and S by the same factor leaves the depth unchanged).
Thinking you get pascals by dividing by the area in cm². → 1 Pa = 1 N/m², so the area must first be changed into m² (1 cm² = 0.0001 m²).

In this model the dent depth is simply proportional to pressure, with a display limit at 100,000 Pa (combinations such as F = 300 N and S = 10 cm² are marked as at the limit). Real sand gets compacted, so the depth is not exactly proportional to pressure. The width of the base is drawn proportional to √S so that it gives a sense of the area.
