For axons of the same diameter, how different do you think the conduction speed is between a myelinated axon and an unmyelinated one?💡 髄鞘で覆われた部分の膜では、イオンが出入りできるでしょうか。Can ions move across the membrane where it is covered by myelin?
What do you think happens to nerve conduction as the temperature is lowered from body temperature (37 °C)?💡 イオンチャネルの開閉もタンパク質の反応であることを思い出しましょう。Remember that the opening and closing of ion channels is also a protein reaction.

In the starting state ("Myelinated", ①Diameter 10.0 µm, ②Temp. 37 °C, ③Node gap d×100=1.00mm), watch the axon and pick out the node that is Firing (Na+ in), the "Local current" arrows flowing forward, and the Refractory nodes behind. If it moves too fast, press "Pause" to freeze it.
Set "①Diameter" to 1.0 µm and to 20.0 µm, and record the "Speed" at the top right.
Press the "Unmyelinated" button, record the "Speed" again at ①Diameter 1.0 µm and 20.0 µm, and compare with the myelinated values. Also watch how the membrane fires patch by patch along the whole axon.
Go back to "Myelinated" with diameter 10.0 µm, then lower "②Temp." from 37 → 27 → 17 → 10 °C. Check the "Speed", "Gating rate" and "Safety factor" values, and whether the axon shows "Conduction block".
Set the temperature to 13 °C and compare "③Node gap" at d×100 and d×200. See how the "Safety factor" and the success of conduction change (press "Reset" after each change).
Check
In the myelinated axon, where did action potentials (Na+ inflow) occur? What was happening under the myelin?→ 活動電位はランビエ絞輪だけで発生し、髄鞘で覆われた部分では発生しなかった。 Action potentials occurred only at the nodes of Ranvier, never along the parts covered by myelin. Local circuit current (arrows) flowed inside the axon under the myelin and depolarized the next node to threshold (−55 mV), so the impulse jumped from node to node.
At 37 °C, how did the conduction speed change with diameter and myelination?→ 有髄では 1 µm で 6.0 m/s、10 µm で 60.0 m/s、20 µm で 120.0 m/s と直径に比例して増えた。 Myelinated: 6.0 m/s at 1 µm, 60.0 m/s at 10 µm and 120.0 m/s at 20 µm, increasing in proportion to diameter. Unmyelinated: 1.00 m/s at 1 µm and 4.47 m/s at 20 µm, increasing only with the square root of diameter. At 20 µm, the myelinated axon is about 27 times faster.
When the temperature was lowered, how did the speed and the success of conduction change?→ 有髄・直径10 µm では 37 °C で 60.0 m/s、27 °C で約34.6 m/s、17 °C で約20.0 m/s と、10 °C 下がるごとに約0.58倍に遅くなった(ゲート速度は ×1.00 → ×0.33 → ×0.11)。 For a myelinated 10 µm axon, the speed was 60.0 m/s at 37 °C, about 34.6 m/s at 27 °C and about 20.0 m/s at 17 °C, so it falls to about 0.58 times for every 10 °C drop (gating rate ×1.00 → ×0.33 → ×0.11). At about 10 °C the safety factor fell below 1 (about 0.85) and "Conduction block" appeared: the impulse stopped spreading.
What was shown at the nodes behind the impulse after it passed?→ 後ろの絞輪は「不応期」の色になり、後ろ向きの局所電流の矢印は薄く、その先に × 印が付いて再発火しなかった。 The nodes behind turned the "Refractory" color; the backward local-current arrow was faint and marked with an ×, and those nodes did not fire again. So the impulse travelled only forward (toward the end).

Why did conduction block happen more easily at 13 °C when the node gap was widened to d×200?→ 絞輪の間隔が広いほど、局所電流が次の絞輪に届くまでに弱まり、次の絞輪を脱分極させる量が減る。 The wider the gap, the more the local current weakens before reaching the next node, so the next node is depolarized less. At 13 °C the safety factor is about 1.9 at d×100 but only about 1.0 at d×200, and at 12 °C it falls below 1, causing conduction block. Cooling leaves fewer Na+ channels available, which reduces the margin further.
In diseases such as multiple sclerosis, where myelin is damaged, how might nerve function be affected?→ 髄鞘がないと局所電流が漏れて跳躍伝導ができなくなり、伝導が大きく遅れたり、次の絞輪が閾値に届かず伝導が途切れたりする。 Without myelin, the local current leaks out and saltatory conduction fails, so conduction becomes much slower or stops because the next node does not reach threshold. As a result, sensory and motor signals are not passed on properly. This connects to the drop in speed when switching from myelinated to unmyelinated, and to the conduction block when the safety factor falls below 1.
Common misconceptions
In saltatory conduction, ions or electricity fly through the air from node to node." In fact, local current flows inside the axon and depolarizes the next node, where a new action potential is generated.
Thicker axons speed up by the same proportion whether myelinated or not." Unmyelinated speed rises with the square root of diameter, but myelinated speed rises roughly in proportion to diameter, so the gap grows as axons get thicker.

Speeds use the rules of thumb "at 37 °C, myelinated v = 6 × d and unmyelinated v = 1.0 × √d"; temperature changes channel gating with Q10 = 3, and conduction speed is taken as proportional to √φ (effective Q10 ≈ 1.7). Time is slowed 24000×, and the action potential and refractory period are shortened to about 1/19 for viewing. Note that in this model "③Node gap" changes only the safety factor, not the speed. In high school, focus on "myelinated is faster" and "thicker is faster", and treat Q10 and the safety factor as extension topics.
