Pond Succession Seen from Above

生物基礎 · 生物単元: 植生の遷移Pond Succession Seen from Above 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that sediment and dead plant matter make a pond steadily shallower, and that each plant community creates the conditions for the next one to move in, so succession proceeds from open water → floating-leaved plants → emergent plants → marsh → grassland → climax forest.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If a pond is left alone for hundreds of years, how do you think the water depth at its centre will change? What kinds of plants do you think will eventually grow there?💡 池には毎年、川や周りから何が流れ込み、池の中の生物が枯れたり死んだりすると何が底に残るかを考えましょう。Think about what flows into a pond every year, and what is left on the bottom when the living things in the pond die.
At what water depth do you think water chestnut (floating-leaved), reeds and cattails (emergent), and sedges (marsh plants) each grow? Try ordering them from deepest to shallowest.💡 根を底に張ったまま、葉をどこに広げる植物かに注目しましょう。Pay attention to where each plant spreads its leaves while its roots stay in the bottom.

Try it

The animation starts playing when the page opens, so press "Pause" and then "Reset" to go back to Year 0. In the top view, compare the rings around the central open water with the "Key (outer→inner)": Forest (climax), Grass & shrubs, Marsh (sedges), Emergent plants, Floating plants.
Move the "① Time" slider to 0 → 100 → 200 → 300 → 400 yr, and record the "centre depth" in the side view below and the "Open water ○% of start" label at the bottom left of the top view.
Continue moving "① Time" to 500, 600, 750 and 2000 yr, and check the stage name after "Now (pond centre)", the "Dominant" species, and which item is highlighted in the sequence Open → Floating → Emergent → Marsh → Grass → Forest.
Set "② Sediment & litter: Build-up rate" to ×0.5, press "Reset", and read "Climax reached at about year ○ with these settings" in the text. Then set it to ×2.5, press "Reset", and compare.
Set the build-up rate back to ×1.0. Change "③ Climate" to Dry, Normal and Wet, pressing "Reset" each time, and compare the number of years until the climax is reached.

Check

As time went on, how did the centre depth and the open-water area change? Did they ever increase?→ 中心水深は 5.00 m(0年)→約3.5 m(100年)→約2.3 m(200年)→約1.4 m(300年)→約0.6 m(400年)と浅くなり続け、一度も深くならない。 The centre depth keeps getting shallower: 5.00 m (Year 0) → about 3.5 m (Year 100) → about 2.3 m (Year 200) → about 1.4 m (Year 300) → about 0.6 m (Year 400), and it never gets deeper. Open water (deeper than 2 m) shrinks from 100% to about 25% (Year 100) and about 1% (Year 200), and is 0% by Year 300. Moving the slider back just shows earlier values; nothing increases as time goes forward.
With a build-up rate of ×1.0 and Normal climate, in what order did the stages at the pond centre change?→ 開水面期(〜200年ごろ)→浮葉植物期(ヒシ、300年ごろ)→抽水植物期(アシ・ガマ、400年ごろ)→湿原期(スゲ類、500年ごろ)→草原・低木期(ススキ・ヤナギ類、600〜700年ごろ)→森林(極相、シイ・カシ等、約729年後)。 Open water (until about Year 200) → floating-leaf stage (water chestnut, around Year 300) → emergent stage (reeds and cattails, around Year 400) → marsh stage (sedges, around Year 500) → grass & shrub stage (grasses and willows, around Years 600–700) → climax forest (evergreen oaks, from about Year 729). The order never reverses or skips a stage.
How did the time to reach the climax change when the build-up rate was ×0.5 and ×2.5, and when you changed the climate?→ ×0.5 では約1458年後、×2.5 では約292年後に極相へ到達した(×1.0 では約729年後)。 At ×0.5 the climax was reached at about Year 1458, and at ×2.5 at about Year 292 (about Year 729 at ×1.0). Faster build-up moves the rings inward faster, so succession goes faster, but the order of the stages is the same. With "Dry" climate the climax came at about Year 616 and with "Wet" at about Year 953, because the marsh lasts longer in a wet climate.
In the side view, where were water chestnut, reeds (cattails), sedges and trees drawn?→ ヒシは水深1〜2mの場所で葉を水面に浮かべ、アシ・ガマは水深0.2〜1mの浅い縁で茎を水面から出し、スゲ類は水位がほぼ地表の湿地(−0.2〜+0.3m)、樹木は水面より1.2m以上高い陸地だけに描かれる。 Water chestnut floats its leaves on the surface where the water is 1–2 m deep; reeds and cattails stick up out of the water at the shallow edge (0.2–1 m deep); sedges grow where the ground is about at water level (−0.2 to +0.3 m); and trees appear only on land more than 1.2 m above the water. No emergent plants or trees appear in deep water.

Think further

At Year 0, the top view already showed rings arranged from the outside of the pond inward. How is this arrangement in space related to the changes over time at the pond centre?→ 帯の並び(外側の樹林から内側の浮葉植物まで)は、池の中心がこれからたどる段階の順と同じになっている。 The order of the rings (from the forest outside to the floating plants inside) is the same as the order of stages the centre will go through. The water is shallower near the shore, and as build-up makes the whole pond shallower, the depth range for each zone moves inward, so the rings move inward and the centre passes through the same stages as the outer rings. In other words, the zonation shows the time order of succession laid out in space.
How did the build-up from "dead water plants" in the text change later on, when the floating and emergent zones became smaller? What does this tell us about plants changing their environment?→ 初めは水生植物の遺体による堆積が年約9.8 mm と土砂・腐植(約6.9 mm)より多いが、帯が狭くなる300〜400年ごろには約1.5→0.4 mm と小さくなる。 At first, dead water plants add about 9.8 mm per year, more than sediment and humus (about 6.9 mm), but around Years 300–400, when those zones are small, this drops to about 1.5 and then 0.4 mm. This shows that the water plants of one stage pile up their remains, make the pond shallower, and so create the environment for the next stage (reaction, or environmental modification).

This is a simplified model: a cone-shaped pond 100 m in radius and 5 m deep with a constant water level, so the years and amounts are only rough guides. The stage shown is for the pond centre, and "open water" means water deeper than 2 m, so the display can show 0% open water while the centre is still under water (submerged plants and the detailed change from sun-loving to shade-tolerant forest are left out). Changes to build-up rate or climate apply only from the current year onward, so have students press "Reset" before each comparison.
