Primary Succession Seen in a Soil Profile

Primary Succession Seen in a Soil Profile 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that in primary succession starting from bare rock, plants of the next stage can settle only after the soil reaches a certain thickness, so soil formation controls the pace of succession, and that succession is slower where steep slopes let soil wash away.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Do you think grasses or trees can grow straight away on rock where lava has just cooled? What kind of organisms do you think settle first?💡 草や木が根を張り、水や養分を得るためには何が必要か考えよう。Think about what grasses and trees need in order to spread their roots and get water and nutrients.
Do you think succession proceeds differently on flat rock and on a steep rocky slope?💡 雨が降ったとき、斜面の上にある細かい土がどうなるかを想像しよう。Imagine what happens to fine soil on a slope when it rains.

Try it

Press "Pause", keep "Rock slope" at 5°, and move the "Years passed" slider slowly from 0, watching the soil (humus layer and mineral soil layer) in the cross-section thicken and the plants change from lichens → mosses → herbs → shrubs → sun trees → shade trees.
Stop at 15, 60, 100, 150, 200 and 300 years, and read the "Stage", the "Soil thickness", and the soil thickness still needed for the next plants to settle (how many cm more) at the top.
In the soil-thickness graph on the right, compare when the soil curve crosses each plant's threshold line (mosses 1 cm, herbs 5 cm, shrubs 20 cm, sun trees 50 cm, shade trees 70 cm) with the colored stage band at the bottom.
With Years passed at 300, change "Rock slope" to 20°, 30° and 40°, and compare the stage reached, the soil thickness, and the "Formed" and "Eroded" values (mm/yr).
Move the slider back from right to left and check that the stages rewind in the reverse order.

Check

At a 5° slope, at about what years did you see the mosses, herbs, shrubs, sun-tree forest and shade-tree forest stages?→ 60年で蘚類(土壌約3.5cm)、100年で草本(約12cm)、150年で低木(約33cm)、200年で陽樹林(約57cm)、300年で陰樹林(極相、約92cm)。 Mosses at 60 years (soil about 3.5 cm), herbs at 100 years (about 12 cm), shrubs at 150 years (about 33 cm), sun-tree forest at 200 years (about 57 cm), and shade-tree forest (climax) at 300 years (about 92 cm). The next plants settled after the soil passed the thresholds of 1, 5, 20, 50 and 70 cm.
Which organisms settled in roughly the first 15 years, and how much soil was there then?→ 地衣類(数mmの高さ)が岩の表面に定着した。 Lichens (a few mm tall) settled on the rock surface. After 15 years there was only about 0.35 cm of soil, not yet the 1 cm needed for mosses to settle.
At 300 years, what stage and soil thickness were reached with slopes of 5°, 20°, 30° and 40°?→ 5°では陰樹林(約92cm)、20°では陽樹林(約55cm)、30°では低木(約35cm)、40°では地衣類のまま(約0.65cm)。 At 5°, shade-tree forest (about 92 cm); at 20°, sun-tree forest (about 55 cm); at 30°, shrubs (about 35 cm); at 40°, still lichens (about 0.65 cm). The steeper the slope, the more erosion and the slower the soil builds up, so succession was delayed.
At a 40° slope, what were the "Formed" and "Eroded" values?→ 生成も流出も約0.20 mm/年でほぼ等しく、土壌が増えにくい(土壌の増加=生成−流出)。 Both were about 0.20 mm/yr, almost equal, so the soil barely increased (soil gain = formation − erosion). Even after 100 years the soil stayed almost 0 cm.

Think further

What role do lichens and mosses play for the herbs and trees that come later?→ 地衣類や蘚類は岩の風化を進め、枯れた体が有機物(腐植)となって土壌をつくる。 Lichens and mosses speed up rock weathering, and their dead bodies become organic matter (humus) that builds soil. Once soil forms, it can hold water and nutrients, so rooted herbs and trees can settle. The more plants there are, the faster soil forms.
Why does secondary succession after a forest fire proceed faster than primary succession on lava? Explain using the idea of this simulation.→ このモデルでは土壌の厚さが遷移を律速している。 In this model, soil thickness limits the pace of succession. In secondary succession, soil (along with seeds and roots) is already there, so there is no long wait for soil to build up, and herbs and trees can settle right away.

Years are greatly shortened for teaching; real primary succession takes several hundred to over a thousand years. Soil gain is a simple model of "formation − erosion", with erosion proportional to tanθ. The vertical axes of the cross-section and graph are logarithmic, so lichens (mm scale) and trees (10 m scale) fit in one picture, but drawn lengths are not in true proportion; point this out. The switch from sun trees to shade trees is shown here by a soil threshold rather than by light.
