Add Water and See the Coin! - Refraction and Apparent Position Simulator
Students understand that light from a coin under water refracts at the surface on its way to the eye, so a coin hidden in an empty cup becomes visible and appears shallower than it really is (an apparent image).
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
Your eye is placed so the rim of the cup just hides the coin. Without moving your eye, you pour water into the cup. What will happen to the coin?💡 光が水から空気へ出るとき、進む向きはどうなるか思い出そう。Recall what happens to the direction of light when it passes from water into air.
Compared with its real position, where will the coin under water seem to be?💡 目は「光はまっすぐ進んできた」と考えて物の位置を判断する。Your eye judges where an object is by assuming the light reached it in a straight line.
Try it
Set "Water level h" to 0.00 cm and "View angle γ" to 50°. Check that the real ray stops at the cup rim and "Not visible" appears under the eye.
Press "Water 1.33", then raise "Water level h" little by little (or press "Pour demo ▶"). Record the water level where "Not visible" changes to "Visible!", and the normal, angle of incidence θ₁ and angle of refraction θ₂ at that moment.
Set "Water level h" to 5.00 cm. Look at the dashed purple virtual ray and the faint "Image (apparent position)", and compare "Real depth d" and "Apparent depth d′" in the top-left panel.
Keeping the water level at 5.00 cm, press "Air 1.00", "Water 1.33" and "Glass 1.50" in turn. Compare how the ray bends and how θ₁, θ₂ and d′ change.
Return to "Water 1.33" and move "View angle γ" from 50° to 10°. Find out how the apparent depth d′ changes.
Check
With the view angle at 50° and water (n = 1.33), at about what water level does the coin become visible?→ およそ 3.3 cm を超えると、屈折した光が縁を越えて目に届き「見える!」 Above about 3.3 cm the refracted light gets over the rim and the display changes to "Visible!" (at 2.50 cm it is still blocked by the rim).
When light goes from water into air, which is larger, the angle of refraction θ₂ or the angle of incidence θ₁? Does the light bend toward or away from the normal?→ 屈折角のほうが大きい(例:水位 5.00 cm、γ=50° で θ₁ ≈ 37.0°、θ₂ ≈ 53.1°)。 The angle of refraction is larger (e.g. at 5.00 cm and γ = 50°, θ₁ ≈ 37.0° and θ₂ ≈ 53.1°). The light bends away from the normal.
Is the image (apparent position) deeper or shallower than the real coin? What are d and d′ at a water level of 5.00 cm and γ = 50°?→ 浅い。 Shallower. The real depth is d ≈ 4.78 cm, while the apparent depth is d′ ≈ 2.70 cm. The image lies on the extension of the virtual ray (dashed line).
What happens to the ray when you choose "Air 1.00"?→ 水面で曲がらずまっすぐ進むので、水を入れていても光は壁(縁)に当たり、コインは見えない。 It goes straight without bending at the surface, so even with liquid in the cup the light hits the wall near the rim and the coin is not visible. Refraction happens only when the two materials have different refractive indices.
Think further
Why does the coin appear shallower than it really is?→ 水面で法線から遠ざかるように曲がった光が目に届くが、目はその光がまっすぐ来たと考えて逆向きにたどる。 The light bends away from the normal at the surface before reaching the eye, but the eye traces it back as if it had travelled in a straight line. That traced line (the virtual ray) passes above the real coin, so the coin seems raised.
Why does the bottom of a pool or river look shallower than it is? Does it look shallower when viewed at a slant or from nearly straight above?→ コインと同じ屈折のため。 Because of the same refraction as with the coin. In the simulation d′ ≈ 2.70 cm at γ = 50° but d′ ≈ 3.34 cm at γ = 10°, so it looks shallower the more slanted the view (nearly straight above, d′ approaches d/n ≈ 3.59 cm).
Common misconceptions
Thinking that the coin actually rises when water is added. → The coin does not move; only the path of light changes, so its apparent position (image) becomes shallower.
Thinking that light bends toward the normal when leaving water as well. → From water into air the angle of refraction is larger than the angle of incidence, so the light bends away from the normal.

For grade 7, aim for the qualitative idea that the angle of refraction is larger than the angle of incidence from water to air; treat the refractive index n and Snell's law (shown as n·sinθ₁ = sinθ₂) as enrichment. The model is a cross-section that draws a single ray from the centre of the coin and ignores reflection at the surface, loss of light, and refraction by the cup walls. It works well after doing the real experiment with a bowl and a coin.
