Evaporation vs. Condensation: Saturated Vapor Pressure Up Close
Students understand that when liquid and vapor coexist in a sealed container, the vapor pressure settles at the saturated vapor pressure in a dynamic equilibrium where the evaporation rate equals the condensation rate, and that this value depends only on temperature, not on the volume or the amount of liquid.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Keeping the temperature fixed, if you push the piston to make the gas volume smaller while liquid is still present, do you think the vapor pressure after a while will be higher than before, or the same as before?💡 気体の分子が増えて混み合うと、液面に戻る分子の数はどうなるでしょうか。If the gas molecules become more crowded, what happens to the number of molecules returning to the liquid surface?
When the vapor pressure stops changing, do you think molecules have stopped leaving and entering the liquid surface?💡 画面の「蒸発速度」と「凝縮速度」の2本のバーに注目する準備をしておきましょう。Get ready to watch the two bars, "Evaporation rate" and "Condensation rate".
Try it
In the starting state (Temperature T 353 K, gas volume V about 1.43), read the "Evaporation rate (leaving the surface)" and "Condensation rate (returning to the surface)" bars and the values of "Current vapor pressure p" and "Saturated vapor pressure (water)".
Move the "Piston position (gas volume)" slider all the way to the left to compress the vapor, and for a few seconds watch the vapor pressure p, the two bars, and the vapor-pressure-over-time graph right after.
Then move the slider all the way to the right to expand, wait about 15 seconds, and record how the vapor pressure p and "Molecules in the liquid" change. Then press "More liquid (+20 particles)" twice and check whether the equilibrium vapor pressure changes.
Lower "Temperature T" to 323 K and observe what value the vapor pressure moves toward.
Press "Reset", set Temperature T to 373 K, pull the piston all the way to the right, and wait until all the liquid evaporates. Then move the slider back a little to the left (V about 3.0) and compare the vapor pressure and p × V.
Check
In the starting state, what did the two bars and the vapor pressure show?→ 蒸発速度と凝縮速度はともに約20.1 粒子/秒で等しく、蒸気圧 p は飽和蒸気圧と同じ約47.3 kPa(p ÷ 飽和蒸気圧 = 1.000)だった。 The evaporation and condensation rates were equal at about 20.1 particles/s, and the vapor pressure p was about 47.3 kPa, the same as the saturated vapor pressure (p ÷ saturated vapor pressure = 1.000). Molecules keep moving in and out, but the numbers leaving and returning are the same (dynamic equilibrium).
How did the vapor pressure change right after compressing and a few seconds later?→ 直後は約98 kPa(飽和蒸気圧の約2倍)に上がり、凝縮速度(約32 粒子/秒)が蒸発速度(約20 粒子/秒)を上回った。 Right after, it jumped to about 98 kPa (about twice the saturated vapor pressure), and the condensation rate (about 32 particles/s) exceeded the evaporation rate (about 20 particles/s). Gas molecules returned to the liquid, the liquid count grew, and within a few seconds the vapor pressure returned to about 47.3 kPa.
What happened to the equilibrium vapor pressure when you expanded the vapor or added liquid?→ 膨張直後は約13 kPa まで下がったが、蒸発>凝縮となって液体が減り、やがて約47 kPa に戻った。 Right after expanding it fell to about 13 kPa, but evaporation exceeded condensation, liquid decreased, and it climbed back to about 47 kPa. Adding liquid left it at 47.3 kPa. Changing the volume or the amount of liquid does not change the equilibrium vapor pressure at 353 K.
After all the liquid had evaporated, what happened to the vapor pressure when you reduced V from about 3.6 to about 3.0?→ 約75 kPa から約91 kPa に上がり、p × V はほぼ一定だった(体積に反比例)。 It rose from about 75 kPa to about 91 kPa while p × V stayed almost constant (inversely proportional to volume). Both bars were 0, and the pressure was not fixed at the saturated vapor pressure of 101.3 kPa. Compressing further beyond 101.3 kPa started condensation, and liquid formed again.
Think further
Why does the saturated vapor pressure depend only on temperature and not on volume? Explain using what determines the evaporation rate and the condensation rate.→ 蒸発速度は液面の分子のうち飛び出せるエネルギーをもつ分子の割合で決まり、温度だけで決まる。 The evaporation rate depends on the fraction of surface molecules with enough energy to escape, which depends only on temperature. The condensation rate is proportional to the number density of the gas (molecules ÷ volume). There is only one number density at which the two are equal for each temperature, and pressure is set by number density and temperature, so the equilibrium vapor pressure depends only on temperature.
Why does the vapor pressure fall when the temperature is lowered from 353 K to 323 K?→ 温度が下がると蒸発速度が約20 粒子/秒から約5.5 粒子/秒に大きく減る一方、凝縮速度はすぐには下がらないので凝縮>蒸発となる。 Lowering the temperature cuts the evaporation rate sharply, from about 20 to about 5.5 particles/s, while the condensation rate does not drop as much right away, so condensation > evaporation. Gas molecules return to the liquid and the vapor pressure falls toward about 12.3 kPa, the saturated vapor pressure at 323 K.
Common misconceptions
When the vapor pressure is constant, evaporation and condensation have stopped." Even at equilibrium molecules keep leaving and returning; the evaporation and condensation rates are simply equal (dynamic equilibrium).
Compressing a vapor always keeps its pressure higher." If liquid is present, extra vapor condenses and the pressure returns to the saturated vapor pressure. The pressure changes inversely with volume only for unsaturated vapor with no liquid left.

Each particle stands for many water molecules; the liquid volume is exaggerated, the surface area is fixed, and the vapor is treated as an ideal gas. The temperature is always held at the set value (isothermal), so the heat released or absorbed by condensation and evaporation is not modeled. Recovery after expansion takes about 15 seconds, so use the vapor-pressure-over-time graph to show the curve approaching the dashed saturated-vapor-pressure line.
