Students understand that atoms touch along the body diagonal in body-centered cubic (a√3 = 4r) and along the face diagonal in face-centered cubic (a√2 = 4r), and that this determines the atoms per unit cell (2 and 4) and the packing fractions (0.68 and 0.74).

Predict (before you touch anything)

In a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, do you think neighboring corner atoms touch each other? If not, which atoms do you think touch?💡 立方体の中心にも原子があります。 There is also an atom at the center of the cube. Where are the atoms closest to that center atom?
If BCC and FCC have the same lattice constant a, which do you think has the larger atomic radius r? Which do you think has less empty space (a higher packing fraction)?💡 原子が接している対角線の長さ(体対角線と面対角線)を比べ、単位格子に含まれる原子の数も考えてみましょう。Compare the lengths of the diagonals along which atoms touch (body diagonal vs. face diagonal), and also think about how many atoms each unit cell contains.

Try it

With "Body-centered BCC" selected (Lattice constant a = 0.350 nm), press "Pause (auto-rotating)" to stop the rotation, then move the "View angle θ" slider to see the 8 corner atoms (blue), the 1 body-center atom (red), and the orange line (body diagonal).
In the panel, record the values shown for "Atoms per unit cell", "Contact condition (body diagonal)", "Neighboring corner atoms", and "Packing fraction".
Move the "Lattice constant a" slider from 0.30 nm to 0.45 nm and watch how r, the "Nearest-neighbor distance d", and "2r" change, and whether "just touching" stays displayed.
Set a back to 0.350 nm and press "Face-centered FCC". Watch the face-center atoms (green) move into the center of each face. Move θ to confirm that all six faces have an atom, and record the same four values.
Press "Rebuild animation" and watch the atoms gather at the lattice points until "Atoms at lattice points: just touching" appears.

Check

How many atoms per unit cell did BCC and FCC have, and how were they counted?→ BCC は 8×1/8 + 1 = 2 個、FCC は 8×1/8 + 6×1/2 = 4 個。 BCC: 8×1/8 + 1 = 2 atoms; FCC: 8×1/8 + 6×1/2 = 4 atoms. A corner atom is shared by 8 neighboring unit cells, so it counts as 1/8; a face-center atom is shared by 2 cells, so it counts as 1/2. The body-center atom counts as a whole 1.
At a = 0.350 nm, what was the atomic radius r for BCC and for FCC? Did neighboring corner atoms touch?→ BCC は r = a√3/4 ≈ 0.1516 nm、FCC は r = a√2/4 ≈ 0.1237 nm。 BCC: r = a√3/4 ≈ 0.1516 nm; FCC: r = a√2/4 ≈ 0.1237 nm. In both, a − 2r > 0 (about 0.047 nm for BCC, about 0.103 nm for FCC), so corner atoms are "not touching". Atoms touch along the body diagonal in BCC and along the face diagonal in FCC.
When you changed the lattice constant a from 0.30 nm to 0.45 nm, what happened to r and to the packing fraction?→ r は a に比例して大きくなり(BCC なら a = 0.30 nm で約 0.130 nm、0.45 nm で約 0.195 nm)、最近接距離 d と 2r は常に等しく「ちょうど接触」が保たれた。 r grew in proportion to a (for BCC, about 0.130 nm at a = 0.30 nm and about 0.195 nm at 0.45 nm), and the nearest-neighbor distance d always equaled 2r, so "just touching" was kept. The packing fraction stayed at 0.680 for BCC and 0.740 for FCC no matter what a was.
When you rotated the view, where were the green atoms in FCC?→ 立方体の6つの面それぞれの中心に1個ずつあった。 One at the center of each of the cube's six faces. Front atoms are drawn darker and back atoms paler and see-through, so atoms on the front and back faces can be told apart.

Think further

Why does the packing fraction not depend on the lattice constant a?→ 接触条件から r は a に比例する(BCC: r = √3a/4、FCC: r = √2a/4)。 From the contact condition, r is proportional to a (BCC: r = √3a/4; FCC: r = √2a/4). Substituting into packing fraction = n×(4/3)πr³ / a³, the a³ cancels, leaving only numbers: √3π/8 ≈ 0.68 for BCC and √2π/6 ≈ 0.74 for FCC.
For metal atoms of the same radius r, which has the longer unit-cell edge, BCC or FCC?→ a = 4r/√3 ≈ 2.31r(BCC)、a = 4r/√2 ≈ 2.83r(FCC)なので FCC の方が長い。 BCC: a = 4r/√3 ≈ 2.31r; FCC: a = 4r/√2 ≈ 2.83r, so FCC is longer. But FCC holds 4 atoms per cell and BCC only 2, so the volume per atom is smaller in FCC and it is packed more densely.

The model treats atoms as hard spheres and computes r from a so that they just touch. The figure draws whole spheres even for corner and face-center atoms, so point out verbally that only part of each belongs to the cell. You can link the slider range (0.30–0.45 nm) to real metals (BCC: Na, Fe; FCC: Al, Cu, Ag) and extend to density calculations.
