Haber Process: Equilibrium of Ammonia Synthesis
Students understand that the equilibrium N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ shifts toward NH₃ (fewer molecules) when pressure is raised and toward N₂ + H₂ (the endothermic direction) when temperature is raised (Le Chatelier's principle), and that at equilibrium the forward and reverse reactions keep running at equal rates (dynamic equilibrium).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If the pressure is raised from 30 MPa to 100 MPa at constant temperature, will the proportion of NH₃ increase or decrease?💡 反応式の左辺と右辺で、気体分子の数を比べてみよう。Compare the number of gas molecules on each side of the equation.
Once equilibrium is reached, have the reactions between molecules stopped?💡 平衡になっても個数が一定に見える理由を、正反応と逆反応の両方から考えよう。Think about both the forward and the reverse reactions to explain why the numbers look constant.
Try it
With "① Temperature" 700 K, "② Pressure" 30 MPa and "③ Start" set to "Forward start", press "Reset" and watch for about 20 s. Read the forward v₊ and reverse v₋ curves in the rate graph, the "NH₃ yield" and "At equilibrium" values, and the "N atoms"/"H atoms" counts.
Raise "② Pressure" to 100 MPa. Record how the piston moves down, the temporary gap between the rate curves, the new "At equilibrium" value, and the number of each molecule.
Keeping 100 MPa, raise "① Temperature" to 900 K, then lower it to 500 K, recording the "At equilibrium" value and "Kp" each time.
Set "③ Start" to "Extra NH₃ (reverse)" and watch the reverse reaction dominate as the system moves from pure NH₃ toward equilibrium.
Check
Starting from the forward side, what happens to v₊ and v₋ in the rate graph as equilibrium is approached? Does the reaction stop at equilibrium?→ 初めは v₊ が大きく v₋ はほぼ0だが、v₊ は下がり v₋ は上がって両者が一致する(700 K・30 MPa で v₊=v₋=1.80 回/s)。 At first v₊ is large and v₋ is almost zero; v₊ falls and v₋ rises until they match (v₊ = v₋ = 1.80 /s at 700 K, 30 MPa). The display reads "Dynamic equilibrium v₊=v₋", and "Last 20 s" shows e.g. forward 36, reverse 36: both reactions keep happening.
What changes when the pressure is raised from 30 MPa to 100 MPa?→ ピストンが下がって体積が小さくなり、一時的に v₊ が v₋ より大きくなってから新しい平衡に落ち着く。 Kp(3.06×10⁻⁴)は変わらない。The piston moves down and the volume shrinks; v₊ briefly exceeds v₋, then a new equilibrium is reached. The equilibrium yield rises from 64.2% to 79.5%, NH₃ increases and the total number of molecules falls (e.g., 42 → 38). Kp (3.06×10⁻⁴) does not change.
At 100 MPa, how do the equilibrium yield and Kp change as the temperature goes 700 K → 900 K → 500 K?→ 900 K At 900 K the reverse reaction briefly wins; the equilibrium yield drops to about 54.9% and Kp to about 9.1×10⁻⁶. At 500 K the forward reaction wins; the yield rises to about 95.7% and Kp to about 0.17.
What stays the same no matter what you change?→ 「N原子 32 H原子 96(一定)」の表示どおり、原子の総数は変わらない。 The atom totals, shown as "N atoms 32 H atoms 96 (const.)". Molecule counts change only in the ratio 1 N₂ : 3 H₂ ⇌ 2 NH₃.
Think further
Lower temperatures give higher NH₃ yields, so why does the industrial Haber process run at about 500 ℃ (about 770 K)?→ 温度が低いと反応速度が非常に小さく、平衡に達するまでに時間がかかりすぎるから。 At low temperature the reaction is far too slow to reach equilibrium in reasonable time. About 500 ℃, where the iron catalyst works well, is a compromise between rate and yield, and high pressure (around 20–30 MPa) pushes the equilibrium toward NH₃. A catalyst does not shift the equilibrium; it only shortens the time to reach it.
Kp does not change with pressure, so why does the equilibrium position move toward NH₃?→ 加圧直後は各成分の分圧がすべて大きくなり、反応物側(分子4個)の分圧の積の方が生成物側(分子2個)より大きく増えるため、反応商 Q が Kp より小さくなる。 Right after compression every partial pressure rises, and the reactant side (4 molecules) increases more in the product of partial pressures than the product side (2 molecules), so the reaction quotient Q falls below Kp. The forward reaction proceeds until Q equals Kp again, shifting toward NH₃, which has fewer molecules. Only temperature changes Kp.
Common misconceptions
At equilibrium the reaction stops." Here the forward and reverse reaction animations continue at the same rate, and the rate graph shows v₊ = v₋ still running.
A catalyst produces more NH₃ (shifts the equilibrium)" or "heating always gives more product." A catalyst does not move the equilibrium, and for an exothermic reaction raising the temperature reduces the product.

Kp is computed from constant ΔH = −92 kJ/mol and ΔS = −199 J/(mol·K) with ideal-gas behavior; non-ideality at high pressure is ignored. Rates are normalized for display, and the piston height shows V ∝ nT/P on a log scale. With only a few dozen molecules, the displayed "NH₃ yield" fluctuates by several percent around the "At equilibrium" value (it may even show 100% at 500 K), so have students compare equilibrium values.
