Osmotic Pressure in a U-Tube
Students understand that in a U-tube, water moves into the solution so the level difference ∆h rises steadily and stops when ρg∆h equals the osmotic pressure π, and that because the solution is diluted, the final ∆h is smaller than the value π0/ρg calculated from the starting concentration.

Predict (before you touch anything)
As the sugar-water level in the right arm rises, will it rise at a constant speed, gradually slow down, or overshoot and oscillate?💡 水を押し込む力 π と押し返す力 ρg∆h の差が、液面が上がるにつれてどう変わるか考えよう。Think about how the difference between the push π and the push-back ρg∆h changes as the level rises.
Will the final level difference be the same as, larger than, or smaller than the height from ρg∆h = π0, where π0 = c0RT uses the starting concentration?💡 水が右腕に入ってくると、右腕の糖水の濃度はどうなるだろうか。What happens to the concentration of the sugar water when water flows into the right arm?

With "Starting solute conc. c0" at 0.50 mol/L and "Temperature T" at 298 K, press "Reset" and watch the ∆h[m]–t graph, the "π vs ρg∆h" bars, and the readouts "π", "ρg∆h", "∆h" and "Right arm c" for about 20 s (about 40 h of simulated time).
Near equilibrium, record "∆h∞ (theory)", "Simple calc. π0/ρg" and the status message "∆h∞ is …% of the simple calc." Also check "Solute particles R/L" for the brown solute particles.
Set "Permeability Lp (low–high)" to maximum, then to minimum, and compare the "95% reached" time and ∆h∞ for each new run (the gray line shows the previous run).
Return Lp to the middle, then set "Starting solute conc. c0" to 1.00 mol/L and afterwards "Temperature T" to 373 K, recording how π and ∆h∞ change.
Check
How does ∆h change over time, and what happens to the rate of net water flow?→ ∆h ∆h rises monotonically without oscillating, giving a saturation curve. Early on (about 2 h) |π−ρg∆h|/π0 is about 54% and the level rises fast; by about 10 h it is about 6%, and as the difference shrinks the flow slows and ∆h approaches about 98.1 m.
At c0 = 0.50 mol/L and T = 298 K, what are ∆h∞ and the simple value π0/ρg? How did π change?→ ∆h∞ ≈ 98.1 m、一撃値 ≈ 126.4 m で、∆h∞ は一撃値の約78%。 ∆h∞ ≈ 98.1 m and the simple value ≈ 126.4 m, so ∆h∞ is about 78% of it. The right-arm concentration fell from 0.50 to about 0.388 mol/L, and π dropped from about 1.24 MPa (π0) to about 0.96 MPa, where it equals ρg∆h.
What changes and what stays the same when you change the permeability Lp?→ ∆h∞ は 98.1 m のまま変わらない。 ∆h∞ stays at 98.1 m. Only the time changes: 95% is reached in about 3.4 h at maximum Lp, about 10.8 h at the middle setting, and about 34 h at minimum.
What happens to π and ∆h∞ when c0 or T is raised? Do any solute particles reach the left arm?→ どちらも大きくなる。 Both increase. At c0 = 1.00 mol/L, ∆h∞ ≈ 168.9 m; at T = 373 K as well, ∆h∞ ≈ 199.4 m (π ≈ 1.96 MPa). The solute count always reads "R/L = …/0": no particle ever reaches the left arm.
Think further
Why does ∆h settle smoothly instead of overshooting and oscillating?→ 水の流量が π−ρg∆h に比例するので、差が小さくなるほど流れも小さくなり、差が0になったところで流れも0になるから。 The flow rate is proportional to π − ρg∆h, so as the difference shrinks the flow shrinks too, and it reaches zero exactly when the difference does. There is no inertial overshoot (the membrane resistance dominates), so ∆h approaches equilibrium exponentially.
Why does doubling c0 not double ∆h∞, and why does the ratio to the simple value fall (about 78% → about 67%)? How could you measure an accurate concentration from osmotic pressure?→ 液面差が大きいほど多くの水が右腕に入り、溶液がより強く薄まって π が下がるから。 A larger level difference means more water enters the right arm, diluting the solution more and lowering π further. For accurate work, minimize dilution (e.g., a narrow tube or a large solution volume) or use the actual equilibrium concentration (right-arm c) in π = cRT.
Common misconceptions
Osmotic pressure is fixed by the starting concentration, so ∆h = c0RT/ρg." In a U-tube incoming water dilutes the solution, so the actual equilibrium ∆h is smaller.
A more permeable membrane gives a bigger level difference." Permeability only changes how fast equilibrium is reached, not the equilibrium height.

Real osmotic pressures are on the order of MPa, giving level differences of tens to hundreds of meters, so the model imagines a very long tube (starting column 170 m, cross-section 1 cm², bottom volume ignored); the drawing is scaled and time runs at 1 s = 2 h. Moving any slider starts a new run, with the previous run shown as a gray line. Use it to show that the textbook π = cRT calculation ignores dilution.
