Osmotic Pressure and Semipermeable Membranes

化学 · 化学単元: 浸透圧と半透膜Osmotic Pressure and Semipermeable Membranes 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that only water molecules pass through a semipermeable membrane, in both directions, that the net flow is from pure water into the solution, and that equilibrium is reached when the hydrostatic pressure of the level difference, ρgh, equals the osmotic pressure π = CRT.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Pure water on the left and sugar water on the right start at the same level, separated by a semipermeable membrane. What will happen to the water levels after a while?💡 膜を通れる粒子と通れない粒子があること、右側では膜にぶつかる粒子の一部が砂糖であることに注目しよう。Notice that some particles can pass through the membrane and some cannot, and that on the right some of the particles hitting the membrane are sugar.
Will the level difference keep growing forever, or will it stop somewhere?💡 高くなった水面側の水には、どんな圧力が余分にかかるかを考えよう。Think about what extra pressure acts on the water under the higher surface.

Try it

Press "Reset" and watch with "Sugar concentration C" at 0.025 mol/L and "Temperature T" at 300 K. Confirm that blue water molecules pass through the dotted membrane in both directions while orange sugar molecules bounce back.
Read "π = CRT", "ρgh", "Level difference h", "Passing L→R", "Passing R→L" and "Net flow", and wait (about 20–25 s) until ρgh approaches π and "Osmotic equilibrium (ρgh = π)" appears.
Raise "Sugar concentration C" to 0.050 mol/L and record the new π, "Equilibrium h = CRT/ρg", and how the level difference changes.
Raise "Temperature T" to 373 K and check the change in molecular speed (the "speed ×" value), π, and the equilibrium h.
Finally lower "Sugar concentration C" to 0.010 mol/L and observe the direction of the "Net flow" arrow and the change in level difference.

Check

Do sugar molecules pass through the membrane? In which direction do water molecules pass?→ 砂糖分子は膜で必ずはね返され、右側に留まる。 Sugar molecules always bounce off the membrane and stay on the right. Water molecules pass both left→right and right→left, but before equilibrium more go left→right, so the net flow is from pure water to sugar water.
At C = 0.025 mol/L and T = 300 K, what are π, ρgh and h at equilibrium?→ π=CRT ≈ 62.4 kPa、ρgh π = CRT ≈ 62.4 kPa and ρgh also becomes ≈ 62.4 kPa; the level difference stops at h ≈ 6.36 m (right side higher). Net flow shows "0 ⇄ Osmotic equilibrium".
How do π and the equilibrium level difference change when C or T is raised?→ どちらも大きくなる。 Both increase. At C = 0.050 mol/L, π ≈ 124.7 kPa and equilibrium h ≈ 12.7 m (about double); raising T to 373 K then gives π ≈ 155.1 kPa and h ≈ 15.8 m. π is proportional to both C and T.
When C is lowered to 0.010 mol/L, what happens to the net water flow and the level difference? And how does raising the temperature change molecular motion?→ ρgh Now ρgh is larger than π, so the net flow reverses to "← (from sugar water to pure water)" and h shrinks to about 3.2 m. At 373 K the display shows "speed ×1.115": random motion is faster (speed ∝ √T).

Think further

At equilibrium water molecules still cross the membrane, so why do the levels stay constant?→ 左→右と右→左の通過が平均してつり合い、正味の移動が0になっているから(動的平衡)。 On average the left→right and right→left crossings balance, so the net transfer is zero (a dynamic equilibrium). The hydrostatic pressure ρgh pushing water back out of the solution exactly equals the osmotic pressure π.
Why does a sugar solution of only 0.025 mol/L produce a level difference of about 6 m? How can this be used?→ 浸透圧は π=CRT で、RT が大きいため薄い溶液でも数十 kPa になり、水の密度で割ると数 m の水柱に相当するから。 Osmotic pressure is π = CRT, and RT is large, so even a dilute solution gives tens of kPa—equivalent to several metres of water column. Because it is large and easy to measure, osmotic pressure is used to find molar masses of large molecules; applying more than π to the solution side pushes water the other way (reverse osmosis desalination).

The model keeps the sugar concentration C constant as water moves (in reality the solution is diluted and π drops slightly; work 190 includes dilution), and the level relaxes exponentially toward the equilibrium h. The drawn level difference is scaled down. The "Passing" rates count particles over the last few seconds and fluctuate, so have students judge the net direction from the "Net flow" readout.
