Burning Hydrogen: Electrons on the Move

Burning Hydrogen: Electrons on the Move 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that in the combustion of hydrogen, 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, each H atom loses an electron and is oxidized (oxidation number 0 → +1), each O atom gains electrons and is reduced (0 → −2), and the number of electrons lost by H always equals the number gained by O.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you ignite 6 H₂ and 2 O₂, how many H₂O molecules will form, and what will be left over?💡 化学反応式 2H₂+O₂→2H₂O の係数の比を使って、どちらが先に足りなくなるかを考えよう。Use the coefficient ratio in 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O to decide which reactant runs out first.
During the reaction, do you think electrons move from H to O or from O to H? Recall which of H and O attracts electrons more strongly (has the higher electronegativity).

Try it

Set "H₂ molecules" to 6 and "O₂ molecules" to 2, then press "Ignite". Confirm that only the molecules that will react move together and that the sliders become locked.
Watch the light-blue electrons (e⁻) fly from H to O, and follow the counters at the top ("e⁻ lost by H", "e⁻ gained by O", "moving") as well as the oxidation numbers under each atom (H: +1) and the electron count on each O₂ (+?/4 e⁻).
When the reaction finishes, read the "Results" panel and record H₂ / O₂ used, H₂ / O₂ left over, total electrons transferred, H₂O formed, and the numbers of H atoms oxidized and O atoms reduced.
Press "Reset", set H₂ to 3 and O₂ to 4, ignite again, and compare the results.
Press "Reset", set H₂ to 1, ignite, and see what happens.

Check

With H₂ = 6 and O₂ = 2, how many H₂O form, what is left over, and how many electrons are transferred in total?→ H₂Oは4個でき、H₂が2個そのまま残る(O₂は0個)。 4 H₂O form and 2 H₂ remain unchanged (0 O₂ left). A total of 8 electrons move, shown as "8 = 8" for electrons lost by H and gained by O.
What happens with H₂ = 3 and O₂ = 4? Which one is left over?→ 使われるのはH₂ 2個とO₂ 1個(比2:1)で、H₂Oは2個。 Only 2 H₂ and 1 O₂ react (ratio 2:1), forming 2 H₂O. 1 H₂ and 3 O₂ are left over as molecules. 4 electrons are transferred.
How many electrons does one H atom lose, and how many does one O atom gain? How does this match the oxidation numbers shown?→ H原子1個は電子1個を失い酸化数が0→+1(酸化)、O原子1個は電子2個を受け取り0→−2(還元)。 Each H atom loses 1 electron, so its oxidation number goes 0 → +1 (oxidation); each O atom gains 2 electrons, 0 → −2 (reduction). One O₂ molecule takes 4 electrons, coming from 2 H₂ molecules. With H₂ = 6 and O₂ = 2, 8 H atoms are oxidized and 4 O atoms are reduced.
What happens when you ignite with only 1 H₂?→ H₂ 2個:O₂ 1個の組が作れないので反応は起こらず、移動した電子は0個。 No set of 2 H₂ : 1 O₂ can form, so nothing reacts, 0 electrons move, and all the molecules remain as they were.

Think further

Why are the electrons lost by H and the electrons gained by O always equal, whatever the numbers of molecules?→ 電子は反応で新しく生まれたり消えたりせず、Hから出た電子がそのままOに移るだけだから。 Electrons are neither created nor destroyed in the reaction; the electrons that leave H simply move to O. Oxidation and reduction always happen together, and the electrons lost by the substance being oxidized equal those gained by the substance being reduced. This electron count fixes the 2 H₂ : 1 O₂ ratio: one O₂ needs 4 electrons, and each H₂ supplies 2, so two H₂ are required.
In H₂O the electrons are actually shared, so why do we say the electrons "moved" to O?→ 酸化数を決めるときは、共有電子対を電気陰性度の大きい原子(ここではO)にすべて割り当てると約束しているため。 When assigning oxidation numbers, the shared electron pair is conventionally given entirely to the more electronegative atom (O here). Under this rule H is +1 and O is −2, so oxidation and reduction can be described as electron loss and gain. The real bonds are covalent, with the shared electrons pulled toward O.

The electron "move" is a model based on the oxidation-number convention (shared pairs assigned to the more electronegative O); real H₂O is covalently bonded, and the actual reaction pathway (e.g., radical chain reactions) is not shown. Only one electron per H atom is drawn. Have students predict before igniting, then use equalities such as "8 = 8" in the results panel to discuss conservation of electrons.
