Reaction Rate and Effective Collisions

化学 · 化学単元: 反応速度と活性化エネルギーReaction Rate and Effective Collisions 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a reaction occurs only in effective collisions, where the collision energy (relative kinetic energy along the line of centers) exceeds the activation energy Ea, and that raising the temperature increases the total number of collisions only slightly but the fraction of effective collisions sharply, which is why the reaction rate increases.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the temperature is raised from 200 K to 800 K (4 times), by about how many times do you think the total number of collisions and the number of effective collisions each increase?💡 分子の平均の速さは温度そのものではなく、温度の平方根に比例します。 The average speed of molecules is proportional to the square root of the temperature, not the temperature itself. An effective collision needs enough energy.
If the number of molecules (the concentration) is halved, what do you think happens to the number of collisions per second?💡 衝突は2つの分子が出会うことで起こります。A collision happens when two molecules meet.

Try it

At the start (Temperature T = 500 K, Activation Ea = 12.0, Molecules 100), watch the molecules and the yellow flashes of effective collisions. Wait about 10 seconds and record "Collisions/s", "Effective/s", "Effective %" and the "Since last change" averages shown below.
Set "Temperature T" to 200 K, wait about 10 seconds and record the same values. Then set it to 800 K and record again. Also look at the molecule colors (faster molecules look redder) and "Average speed: measured / theory".
Return to 500 K, raise "Activation Ea" to 24.0, wait about 10 seconds and record the total and effective collisions. Also try Ea = 0.
Return Ea to 12.0, set "Molecules" to 50, and see how the total collisions and the effective fraction change. Use the line graph (green dashes mark each change) to compare before and after.

Check

With Ea = 12.0, what were the total and effective collisions per second (the running averages) at 200 K, 500 K and 800 K?→ 観察例では総衝突数は約87、145、172回/秒で、4倍の温度でも約2倍(√4倍)にしかならなかった。 In one run the totals were about 87, 145 and 172 per second, so four times the temperature gave only about twice as many collisions (√4). The effective collisions were about 0, 8 and 29 per second, a sharp increase.
How did the effective fraction and "Theory: effective fraction" on the screen change with temperature?→ 200 Kで約0.07%(実測ではほぼ0%)、500 Kで約5.6%、800 Kで約16.5%となり、実測の有効割合も理論値 exp(−Ea/RT) に近い値になった。About 0.07% at 200 K (almost 0% measured), about 5.6% at 500 K and about 16.5% at 800 K. The measured effective fraction was close to the theoretical exp(−Ea/RT).
At 500 K, what happened to the total and effective collisions when Ea was raised from 12.0 to 24.0? The total stayed about the same (about 140 per second), while effective collisions dropped from about 8 per second to less than 1 per second (effective fraction about 0.4%). With Ea = 0 every collision was effective: 100%.
What happened to the total collisions and the effective fraction when the molecules were reduced from 100 to 50?→ 総衝突数は約145回/秒から約33回/秒へ、約4分の1に減った。 Total collisions fell from about 145 to about 33 per second, roughly one quarter. The effective fraction stayed about the same (about 6%). Concentration changes how often collisions happen, not the fraction that is effective.

Think further

Why did halving the number of molecules reduce the total collisions to about one quarter, not one half?→ 衝突は2つの分子の組み合わせで起こるので、衝突の回数は分子の数(濃度)の2乗にほぼ比例する。 A collision needs a pair of molecules, so the number of collisions is roughly proportional to the square of the number of molecules (the concentration). With half the molecules, each molecule meets others half as often, and there are half as many molecules, so 1/2 × 1/2 = 1/4.
A reaction rate can become 2–3 times larger when the temperature rises by only 10 K. Explain why this cannot be due to the number of collisions alone, using the simulation results.→ 総衝突数は√Tに比例するので、温度が数%上がっても衝突数は数%しか増えない(200→800 Kでも約2倍)。 Total collisions are proportional to √T, so a few-percent rise in temperature increases collisions by only a few percent (even 200 → 800 K only about doubles them). The effective fraction grows exponentially as exp(−Ea/RT), so it is the increase in the effective fraction that changes the rate so much.

The model uses 2D hard disks, and Ea is on an arbitrary scale roughly like kJ/mol. Molecules are not converted into a product: effective collisions only flash and are counted, so reactants are not used up. The per-second values fluctuate a lot, so have students wait at least 10 seconds after each change and read the "Since last change" averages. For 2D hard disks the effective fraction is exactly exp(−Ea/RT); for real 3D molecules the formula is slightly different.
