Gas Cylinder Lab — Avogadro's Law

Students understand that at the same temperature and pressure, equal amounts (equal numbers of molecules) of any gas take up the same volume (Avogadro's law: 1 mol = 22.4 L at 0 °C and 1.013×10⁵ Pa), while the mass differs from gas to gas according to the molar mass.

Predict (before you touch anything)

At 0 °C, you put 1 mol each of hydrogen H₂, oxygen O₂ and carbon dioxide CO₂ into cylinders with pistons. Which cylinder do you think will have the largest volume?💡 気体の体積の大部分は、分子そのものの大きさと、分子と分子の間のすき間のどちらが占めているでしょうか。Most of a gas's volume is taken up by what: the molecules themselves, or the space between them?
Then what about the masses of the gases in the three cylinders?💡 H₂、O₂、CO₂ の分子1個の重さ(分子量)を比べてみましょう。Compare the mass of one molecule (the molecular mass) of H₂, O₂ and CO₂.

Try it

Press the "0℃, 1 mol" button, and record the heights of the three cylinders (dashed line) and the V, M, "Mass" and particle-count values under each cylinder.
Move the "Amount n" slider to 0.50 mol and to 2.00 mol, and record how the volume, the number of particles and the mass change.
Press the "25℃, 1 mol" button and read the volume and the formula line below. Then move the "Temperature t" slider to 100 ℃ and to −20 ℃ and record the volume.

Check

At 0 °C and 1 mol, what were the volume, number of particles and mass of each of the three gases?→ 体積はどれも 22.40 L、粒子数はどれも 6.02×10²³ 個で同じだった。 All had a volume of 22.40 L and 6.02×10²³ particles. The masses differed in proportion to the molar mass: H₂ 2.00 g, O₂ 32.00 g, CO₂ 44.00 g.
At 0 °C, what happened to the volume, number of particles and mass when n was 2.00 mol?→ すべて 1 mol のときの 2 倍になった(体積 44.80 L、粒子数 1.204×10²⁴ 個、質量 H₂ 4.00 g・O₂ 64.00 g・CO₂ 88.00 g)。 Everything doubled compared with 1 mol (volume 44.80 L, 1.204×10²⁴ particles, masses H₂ 4.00 g, O₂ 64.00 g, CO₂ 88.00 g), and the three cylinders stayed at the same height. At 0.50 mol everything is halved.
What was the volume of 1 mol at 25 °C? What about 2 mol at 100 °C and 0.5 mol at −20 °C?→ 25 ℃ では約 24.45 L(22.4 × 298.15/273.15)。 At 25 °C it was about 24.45 L (22.4 × 298.15/273.15). 2 mol at 100 °C gave about 61.20 L and 0.5 mol at −20 °C about 10.38 L. In every case the three gases had the same volume.

Think further

Going from 0 °C to 25 °C, the volume did not become 25 times larger (or impossible to calculate from 0); it grew only about 1.09 times. Gas volume is proportional to the absolute temperature T in kelvin. 0 °C = 273.15 K and 25 °C = 298.15 K, so the ratio is 298.15/273.15 ≈ 1.09 and the volume is 22.4 L × 1.09 ≈ 24.5 L. You must not use the ratio of Celsius temperatures.
Two balloons of the same volume are filled with hydrogen and with carbon dioxide at the same temperature and pressure. The hydrogen balloon floats and the CO₂ balloon sinks. Explain using what you saw.→ 同じ体積なら物質量(分子の数)は同じだが、1 mol の質量は H₂ が 2 g、CO₂ が 44 g と大きく違う。 The same volume means the same amount (number of molecules), but 1 mol of H₂ is 2 g while 1 mol of CO₂ is 44 g. Air averages about 29 g/mol, so hydrogen is lighter than the same volume of air and floats, while CO₂ is heavier and sinks.

Pressure is assumed constant at 1.013×10⁵ Pa and the gases are treated as ideal, using V = n × 22.4 × T/273.15 (small deviations of real gases are ignored). The dots in each cylinder are a sample of up to 30, not the real number of particles. All three gases are drawn with the same molecule size and speed; point out that at the same temperature lighter H₂ molecules actually move faster.
