Hydrogen-like ions: orbit radius, energy levels and electron transitions 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that in a hydrogen-like ion with one electron the orbit radius is proportional to n²/Z and the energy levels take only certain values, Eₙ = −13.6Z²/n² eV, so when the electron drops from a higher to a lower level it emits light of a definite wavelength λ = 1240/ΔE nm set by the energy difference ΔE.

Predict (before you touch anything)

For a hydrogen atom, which emits light with more energy: an electron dropping from n = 3 to n = 2, or from n = 2 to n = 1?💡 エネルギー準位の間隔が、n が大きくなるにつれて広がるのか、狭まるのかを考えましょう。Think about whether the gaps between energy levels get wider or narrower as n increases.
If the nuclear charge goes from +1e (hydrogen) to +2e (He⁺), what do you think happens to the size of the electron's orbit?💡 原子核が電子を引きつける電気の力の強さを考えましょう。Think about how strongly the nucleus pulls on the electron.

Try it

In the starting state ("Atomic number" Z = 1, "Quantum number" n = 3, "Drops to" n′ = 2), press "Play transition". Watch the electron move from n = 3 to n = 2 and emit a photon (wavy line) in the orbit picture, and the arrow on the "Energy levels [eV]" diagram. Record ΔE and λ from the readout below.
Keeping Z = 1 and n′ = 2, set n to 4, 5 and 6, and record λ and the type of light (visible color). Then try n = 2, n′ = 1 and n = 4, n′ = 3.
Set n = 1 and record r and Eₙ, then move the "Atomic number" slider to 1, 2, 3 and 10, and watch how r, Eₙ, v and the size of the orbit picture change.
Set Z = 2 (He⁺) and find λ for n = 3 → n′ = 2 and for n = 6 → n′ = 4. Compare them with λ for hydrogen's n = 3 → 2.

Check

For hydrogen (Z = 1), what were λ and the color for drops from n = 3, 4, 5 and 6 to n′ = 2?→ 約 656.5 nm(赤)、486.3 nm(青)、434.2 nm(紫)、410.3 nm(紫)。 About 656.5 nm (red), 486.3 nm (blue), 434.2 nm (violet) and 410.3 nm (violet). The higher the starting level, the larger ΔE and the shorter the wavelength (all visible light).
For hydrogen, what were ΔE, λ and the type of light for n = 2 → 1 and n = 4 → 3?→ 2 → 1 は ΔE ≈ 10.2 eV、λ ≈ 121.6 nm で紫外線(目に見えない)。 2 → 1: ΔE ≈ 10.2 eV, λ ≈ 121.6 nm, ultraviolet (not visible). 4 → 3: ΔE ≈ 0.661 eV, λ ≈ 1876 nm, infrared (not visible). On the level diagram the gap between n = 1 and 2 is large, and the gaps get narrower as n increases.
With n = 1, what happened to r and E₁ as Z went 1 → 2 → 3 → 10?→ r r went 0.0530 → 0.0265 → 0.0177 → 0.0053 nm, shrinking in proportion to 1/Z, and the whole orbit picture contracted. E₁ went −13.6 → −54.4 → −122 → −1360 eV, becoming deeper (lower) in proportion to Z².
How did the electron speed v change for larger n?→ Z/n It got slower in proportion to Z/n (for Z = 1, about 2.19×10⁶ m/s at n = 1 and about 7.30×10⁵ m/s at n = 3). In the animation, outer orbits go around more slowly.

Think further

When light from a hydrogen discharge tube passes through a prism, you see a few separate lines (a line spectrum) instead of a continuous rainbow. The electron can only have certain energy levels, so the photon energy ΔE is limited to the differences between levels, and only light of definite wavelengths (656.5, 486.3, 434.2, 410.3 nm, etc.) is emitted.
He⁺'s n = 6 → 4 light had the same wavelength as hydrogen's n = 3 → 2 light. ΔE = 13.6Z²(1/n′² − 1/n²). For Z = 2, Z² = 4, so 4(1/16 − 1/36) = 1/4 − 1/9, which gives the same ΔE ≈ 1.889 eV and λ ≈ 656.5 nm as hydrogen's n = 3 → 2.

656 nm。This is extension material based on the Bohr model; point out that modern quantum mechanics replaces circular orbits with an electron cloud (probability distribution). The real orbital period of about 10⁻¹⁶ s is stretched to 1 s on screen, and a transition is drawn over 0.8 s. Absorption (the electron climbing to a higher level) is not shown. λ = 1240/ΔE is an approximate conversion; the measured hydrogen n = 3 → 2 line is about 656 nm.
