音の正体は疎密波(粒子と波形で見る)Sound Is a Compression Wave (Particles and Waveform)
ねらいGoal:音は空気の粒子がその場で前後に振動し、その「疎」と「密」の変化が順に隣へ伝わる縦波(疎密波)であり、振動数を大きくすると波長が短くなるが、伝わる速さは振動数や振幅によらず一定であることを理解する。Students understand that sound is a longitudinal (compression) wave: air particles only vibrate back and forth in place while the pattern of compressions and rarefactions passes from one to the next, and that raising the frequency shortens the wavelength while the wave speed stays the same regardless of frequency or amplitude.

1予想しよう(触る前に)Predict (before you touch anything)
- スピーカーから音が出ているとき、スピーカーの前の空気の粒子は音といっしょに遠くまで運ばれていくと思いますか。When a speaker is making a sound, do you think the air particles in front of it are carried far away along with the sound?💡 スピーカーの前に置いたろうそくの炎が、音でどう動くかを想像してみましょう。Imagine how a candle flame placed in front of a speaker would move when sound plays.
- 音源の振動数を大きく(1秒間に振動する回数を多く)すると、「密」と「密」の間かくはどうなると思いますか。If you increase the frequency of the source (more vibrations per second), what do you think happens to the distance between one compression and the next?💡 波が1秒間に進む距離が同じなら、その中に入る「密」の数はどうなるでしょうか。If the wave travels the same distance each second, how many compressions would fit into that distance?
2動かしてみようTry it
- 「最初から」を押し、音源(振動板)が振動し始めると、疎と密の模様と「先頭」の線が右へ進んでいく様子を見る。必要なら「一時停止」で止める。Press "Restart" and watch the compression/rarefaction pattern and the "front" line move to the right as the sound source (vibrating plate) starts to vibrate. Use "Pause" to freeze it if needed.
- 赤い粒子(「注目:平衡位置」の点線)を目で追い、その粒子が右へ流れていくか、その場でゆれているかを確かめる。Follow the red particle (the dashed "Watch: rest position" line) and check whether it drifts to the right or only vibrates in place.
- 「① 振動数」スライダーを 6.0 Hz から 12.0 Hz、次に 3.0 Hz に変え、上の粒子の疎密の間かく、波形グラフの「波長 λ」の表示、下の表示の「伝わる速さ v」と「波長 λ」の値を記録する。Move the "① Frequency" slider from 6.0 Hz to 12.0 Hz, then to 3.0 Hz. Record the spacing of the compressions in the particle row, the "wavelength λ" mark on the waveform, and the "Speed v" and "wavelength λ" values in the readout.
- 振動数を 6.0 Hz に戻し、「② 振幅(大きさ)」スライダーを 20 % と 100 % にして、粒子の集まり方(色の濃さ)、波形の山・谷の高さ、波長と速さの表示を比べる。Return the frequency to 6.0 Hz and set the "② Amplitude" slider to 20 % and then 100 %. Compare how crowded the particles are (color depth), the height of the crests and troughs on the waveform, and the wavelength and speed readouts.
- 上の粒子の「密」「疎」の位置と、点線で結ばれた下の波形の山・谷の位置を見比べる。Compare the positions of compressions (C) and rarefactions (R) in the particle row with the crests and troughs of the waveform below, which are joined by dashed lines.
3確かめようCheck
- 赤い粒子は、音といっしょに右へ移動していきましたか。Did the red particle move to the right along with the sound?→ 移動しなかった。赤い粒子は平衡位置(赤い点線)のまわりで左右にゆれ続けるだけで、右へ進んでいったのは疎と密の模様(波)だけだった。No. The red particle just kept vibrating left and right around its rest position (the red dashed line). Only the pattern of compressions and rarefactions (the wave) moved to the right.
- 振動数を 6.0 Hz → 12.0 Hz → 3.0 Hz と変えたとき、波長と伝わる速さはどうなりましたか。When you changed the frequency 6.0 Hz → 12.0 Hz → 3.0 Hz, what happened to the wavelength and the wave speed?→ 波長は 12.0 cm → 6.0 cm → 24.0 cm と変わり、振動数が2倍になると波長は半分になった。伝わる速さは v = 72 cm/s のまま変わらなかった。The wavelength went 12.0 cm → 6.0 cm → 24.0 cm: doubling the frequency halved the wavelength. The speed stayed at v = 72 cm/s.
- 振幅を 20 % から 100 % にすると、何が変わり、何が変わりませんでしたか。When you changed the amplitude from 20 % to 100 %, what changed and what did not?→ 粒子の集まり方・散らばり方(疎密の濃淡)が強くなり、波形の山と谷が高く(深く)なった。波長(12.0 cm)と伝わる速さ(72 cm/s)は変わらなかった。The particles bunched up and spread out more strongly (stronger compressions and rarefactions), and the crests and troughs of the waveform became taller and deeper. The wavelength (12.0 cm) and the speed (72 cm/s) did not change.
- 波形グラフの山と谷は、粒子の疎・密のどちらに対応していましたか。波長はどこからどこまでの長さでしたか。Which parts of the particle row did the crests and troughs of the waveform match? From where to where was the wavelength measured?→ 山は粒子が集まった「密」、谷は粒子がまばらな「疎」に対応していた。波長 λ の矢印は「密」から次の「密」(山から次の山)までの長さを示していた。Crests matched the compressions, where particles are crowded, and troughs matched the rarefactions, where they are spread out. The wavelength λ arrow showed the distance from one compression to the next (one crest to the next).
4考えようThink further
- 空気そのものが運ばれないのに、遠くの人の耳に音が届くのはなぜでしょうか。If the air itself is not carried along, how does sound reach the ear of someone far away?→ 音源が空気を押したり引いたりすると、となりの粒子が少し遅れて同じように振動し、その振動が次々と隣へ伝わるから。届くのは空気の流れではなく、振動(疎密の変化)である。そのため、空気などの物質がない真空中では音は伝わらない。When the source pushes and pulls the air, the neighboring particles vibrate the same way a little later, and the vibration is passed on from neighbor to neighbor. What arrives is the vibration (the pattern of compressions and rarefactions), not moving air. That is why sound cannot travel through a vacuum, where there is no matter to vibrate.
- このシミュレーションで、高い音と大きい音はそれぞれどの操作にあたりますか。理由も考えましょう。In this simulation, which control corresponds to a higher-pitched sound, and which to a louder sound? Explain why.→ 高い音は振動数を大きくすること(1秒間の振動の回数が多い)で、波長が短くなる。大きい音は振幅を大きくすること(空気の押し縮めが強い)で、波形の山・谷が大きくなる。どちらの場合も音の伝わる速さは変わらない。A higher pitch means a higher frequency (more vibrations per second), which gives a shorter wavelength. A louder sound means a larger amplitude (the air is squeezed more), which gives taller crests and deeper troughs. In both cases the speed of sound does not change.
よくある誤解Common misconceptions
- 「音は空気が流れて(風のように)運ばれることで伝わる」という誤解。空気の粒子はその場で振動するだけで、伝わるのは振動(疎密の模様)である。"Sound travels because air flows along with it, like wind." Air particles only vibrate in place; what travels is the vibration (the compression pattern).
- 「高い音や大きい音ほど速く伝わる」という誤解。同じ空気中なら、振動数や振幅を変えても音の伝わる速さは一定で、変わるのは波長や疎密の強さである。"Higher or louder sounds travel faster." In the same air, the speed of sound stays constant when frequency or amplitude changes; what changes is the wavelength or how strong the compressions are.

This is a slow-motion model with 1 cm particle spacing, a speed of 72 cm/s, and frequencies of 2–12 Hz; real sound in air travels at about 340 m/s, and humans hear roughly 20–20,000 Hz. The waveform shows pressure change versus position at one instant, whereas an oscilloscope trace in the textbook shows change over time, so point out the different horizontal axis. Because sound is longitudinal, remind students that the crests and troughs do not mean the particles move up and down.
