Gas Pressure and Work with a Weighted Piston
Students understand that gas pressure is the combined push of molecules hitting the walls, that the piston settles where this balances the weight (outside pressure), that P×V stays constant at constant temperature (Boyle's law), and that in an adiabatic compression, with no heat flow, work done on the gas raises its temperature.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you double the weight on the piston while the temperature stays constant, what do you think happens to the volume of the gas?💡 ピストンが止まるのは、上から押す力と、下から分子がぶつかって押し上げる力がどうなったときでしょうか。When does the piston stop moving? Compare the push of the weight from above with the push of the molecules from below.
If no heat can flow in or out (adiabatic) and the weight pushes the piston down to compress the gas, what do you think happens to the gas temperature?💡 下がってくるピストンにぶつかってはね返った分子の速さを想像してみましょう。Imagine a molecule bouncing off a piston that is moving toward it. What happens to its speed?
Try it
In the starting state ("① Mass M (weight + piston)" = 40, "② Isothermal ⇔ Adiabatic" = Isothermal), wait a few seconds and record "P(collisions)", "Outside Mg/S", "Volume V", "Temp. T", "P×V" and "PV/nRT".
Still isothermal, set slider ① to 80, wait a few seconds and record the same values. Then set it to 20 and record again. In the "P–V graph" on the right, see the point move along the "isotherm".
With ① at 20, move slider ② to the right to "Adiabatic". Move ① from 20 to 80 in one go, and watch the piston, the color of the molecules, "Temp. T" and "T×V".
Press "Reset", set ① to 20 and ② to "Adiabatic", then move ① from 20 to 80 slowly in small steps. Compare the final "Temp. T", "Volume V" and "T×V" with step 3.
Check
In isothermal mode, what happened to V and P×V when M went 20 → 40 → 80?→ V V went from about 1.0 to 0.5 to 0.25, roughly halving each time the weight (outside pressure) doubled. P×V stayed at about 40 and T stayed at 300 K (Boyle's law).
When the piston was at rest, how did "P(collisions)" compare with "Outside Mg/S"?→ ほぼ等しかった(例:外圧 80 に対し衝突集計 約 75〜90)。 They were almost equal (e.g. about 75–90 for an outside pressure of 80). The piston rests where the pressure from molecular collisions balances the outside pressure. The collision count is random, so the value wobbles a little.
In adiabatic mode, what happened to T when M jumped from 20 to 80? What about "PV/nRT"?→ ピストンが勢いよく下がって上下に揺れ、分子が速く(色が変化)なって、温度は約 300 K から 700〜800 K 程度まで上がった。 The piston dropped quickly and bounced, the molecules sped up (their colors changed), and T rose from about 300 K to roughly 700–800 K. The volume did not shrink as much as in isothermal mode (about 0.7 instead of 0.25). PV/nRT stayed close to 1 throughout.
In adiabatic mode, how did the final temperature and T×V differ between raising M slowly from 20 to 80 and raising it all at once?→ ゆっくりでは温度は約 550 K、T×V は約 270〜280 でほぼ一定に保たれた。 Slowly, T reached about 550 K and T×V stayed nearly constant at about 270–280. All at once, T went above about 750 K and T×V rose from about 330 to over 500. A sudden compression does more work on the gas than a slow one, so the gas gets hotter.
Think further
Why does the temperature rise in an adiabatic compression? Explain using collisions between molecules and the piston.→ 下がってくるピストンにぶつかった分子は、動く壁にはね返されるので、ぶつかる前より速くなる。 A molecule that hits a piston moving toward it bounces back faster than it came in. This is the work the piston (weight) does on the gas. Because no heat can escape, the mean kinetic energy of the molecules, that is, the temperature, goes up. In isothermal mode the energy flows out to the heat bath, so the temperature stays the same.
When you pump up a bicycle tire quickly, the end of the pump gets hot. Explain this using what you saw in the simulation.→ すばやく押し込むと熱が外に逃げる時間がなく、断熱圧縮に近い。 Pumping quickly leaves no time for heat to escape, so it is close to an adiabatic compression. The piston does work on the air and the molecules gain kinetic energy, so the air temperature rises and the pump gets hot.
Common misconceptions
Gas pressure is molecules pushing on each other." Pressure is the total force (change in momentum) from molecules bouncing off the walls and the piston.
Compressing a gas always heats it" or "you must add heat to raise the temperature." With heat exchange, the temperature can stay constant during compression, and doing work can raise the temperature without adding heat.

This is a 2D model with 80 molecules; P and V are in model units (only temperature is converted to K). In 2D, P = N m⟨v²⟩/(2V) and the adiabat is T×V = constant (γ = 2), so the factors differ from a real 3D gas. Isothermal mode represents a heat bath by rescaling all molecular speeds after collisions. Adiabatic changes go beyond the basic chemistry course, so focus on Boyle's law and treat the adiabatic part as an extension.
