Van Arkel–Ketelaar Triangle: Three Bond Types by Electronegativity

Van Arkel–Ketelaar Triangle: Three Bond Types by Electronegativity 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that the electronegativity difference Δχ and the average χ of two elements show whether a bond is closer to metallic, (polar) covalent or ionic, and that the three bond types are not separate boxes but change continuously into one another.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Among F₂ (two identical atoms), H₂O (H and O) and NaCl (Na and Cl), in which do you think the bonding electrons are pulled most strongly toward one atom?💡 電気陰性度は「電子を引きつける強さ」です。 Electronegativity is how strongly an atom attracts electrons. Which pair has the biggest difference between its two atoms?
Al–Al and F–F both have an electronegativity difference of 0. Do you think they form the same kind of bond?💡 差だけでなく、電気陰性度そのものが大きいか小さいか(金属か非金属か)にも注目しましょう。Look not only at the difference but also at whether the electronegativity itself is large or small (metal or nonmetal).

In the starting state (Atom A = Na 0.93, Atom B = Cl 3.16), read where the point is on the triangle and the readouts "Avg. χ", "Δχ", "δ" and "Bond type". In the bond model below, see which side the electrons are on.
Press the "Real compound presets" buttons "F₂", "HCl", "H₂O", "MgO" and "CsF" in turn. Record how the point moves on the triangle and how the electron-cloud shift and δ change in the atom model below.
Press "Al" and "F₂". Both have Δχ = 0; compare where each point lands on the bottom edge of the triangle and how the bond type and bond model differ.
Set "Atom A" to H 2.20 and move the "Atom B" slider step by step to the right (e.g. S, Cl, O, F). Watch the Metallic/Covalent/Ionic bar at the bottom change smoothly.

Check

What were Δχ and the bond type for NaCl, H₂O (O–H) and F₂?→ NaClはΔχ 2.23で「イオン結合」、H–OはΔχ 1.24で「極性共有結合」、F–FはΔχ 0.00で「(無極性)共有結合」。 NaCl: Δχ 2.23, "Ionic bond". H–O: Δχ 1.24, "Polar covalent bond". F–F: Δχ 0.00, "Nonpolar covalent bond". The larger Δχ is, the closer the point gets to the top corner (CsF).
What was the partial charge δ for HCl, H₂O and MgO? How was the electron cloud drawn in the atom model?→ HClは δ = 0.48、H₂O(H–O)は 0.62、MgOは上限の 1.00。 HCl: δ = 0.48, H₂O (H–O): 0.62, MgO: the maximum 1.00. The larger δ is, the more the electron cloud is pulled toward the more electronegative atom (Cl or O); for MgO the electrons are fully transferred and the atoms are drawn as a cation and an anion.
Al and F₂ both had Δχ = 0. How did their positions and bond types differ?→ Alは平均χ 1.61で底辺の左寄り(平均χ = 2.0の線より左)にあり「金属結合」(自由電子の海として描かれる)。 Al has an average χ of 1.61, on the left part of the bottom edge (left of the average χ = 2.0 line), and is "Metallic bond" (drawn as a sea of free electrons). F₂ has an average χ of 3.98, at the right end, and is "Nonpolar covalent bond". Even with zero difference, atoms with low electronegativity form a metallic bond and atoms with high electronegativity form a covalent bond.
Did the triangle colors and the Metallic/Covalent/Ionic bar change suddenly when crossing the boundary line (Δχ = 1.7)?→ 急には切り替わらず、色も割合も連続的(グラデーション)に変わった。 No. Both the colors and the percentages change smoothly (a gradient). For example, H₂O is 93% covalent and 7% ionic, while MgO is 8% covalent and 91% ionic, so every bond has a mix of character. The boundary lines are only rough guides.

Think further

The NaCl point has an average χ of 2.04, close to the metallic region, but it is judged ionic. The bond type depends on Δχ as well as the average χ. NaCl has a large Δχ of 2.23, so it sits high in the triangle, in the ionic region. Na gives up its electron easily and Cl pulls strongly, so the electron moves almost completely to Cl.
Use Δχ and δ from this simulation to explain why the H₂O molecule is polar.→ O–HのΔχは1.24で、共有電子対がO側に引き寄せられ、Oがδ−、Hがδ+の極性共有結合になる(シミュレーションでは δ = 0.62)。 For O–H, Δχ is 1.24, so the shared pair is pulled toward O, making a polar covalent bond with O as δ− and H as δ+ (δ = 0.62 in the simulation). Because the H₂O molecule is bent, the polarities of the two O–H bonds do not cancel, so the whole molecule is polar.

Electronegativities are revised Pauling values (O 3.44, H 2.20, etc.); with the older textbook values (O 3.5, H 2.1), Δχ for O–H is about 1.4. The partial charge δ = Δχ/2 (max 1) and the Metallic/Covalent/Ionic percentages are teaching estimates, not measured values. The boundaries Δχ = 1.7 and average χ = 2.0 are also conventional rough guides. Ionic bonds are drawn as if monovalent, so MgO appears as "Mg⁺" and "O⁻" (really Mg²⁺ and O²⁻).
