Students understand that an ionic bond is electrostatic attraction between ions formed by electron transfer, a covalent bond is a shared pair made from one unpaired electron from each atom, and a metallic bond holds positive ions together through free electrons, and that bonded atoms settle at the distance where attraction and repulsion balance.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When Na gives one electron to Cl to form Na⁺ and Cl⁻, how do you think the size of each particle will compare with the neutral atom?💡 Naの電子殻の数と、Clの最外殻の電子どうしの反発に注目しましょう。Think about the number of electron shells in Na, and about repulsion between the outer electrons of Cl.
Do you think two attracting ions or atoms will keep moving closer until they merge?💡 近づきすぎたとき、原子核どうしや内側の電子殻どうしの間に何が働くでしょうか。When they get very close, what acts between the two nuclei and between the inner electron shells?

Try it

On the "Ionic" tab, press "Transfer electron" and watch one outer electron of Na move to Cl. Check that the labels change from "Na atom 186 pm" and "Cl atom 99 pm" to "Na⁺ 116 pm" and "Cl⁻ 167 pm", and look at the total electron count at the bottom right.
Move the "Distance" slider to 240 pm, 283 pm, 500 pm and 1400 pm, and record which state is shown at the top of the canvas and below the controls: "Repulsion", "Stable (bond length)", "Attraction" or "Almost no interaction".
Set 500 pm and press "Release", and see at what distance the ions settle. Also check the part of the crystal lattice at the lower left and the position of the dot on the Energy U(r) graph.
Switch to the "Covalent" tab and watch the two Cl atoms approach. Then set "Distance" to 150 pm, 199 pm, 300 pm and 600 pm, and read the state, the number of shared pairs, and "Outer shell of each Cl".
On the "Metallic" tab, set "Temperature" to 10 K, 300 K and 360 K, and compare how much the positive ions vibrate and how fast the free electrons move.

Check

How did the radii of Na and Cl and the total number of electrons change after the transfer?→ Naは186 pmからNa⁺の116 pmに小さくなり、Clは99 pmからCl⁻の167 pmに大きくなった。 Na shrank from 186 pm to 116 pm as Na⁺, and Cl grew from 99 pm to 167 pm as Cl⁻. The total number of electrons stayed at 28 (Na 11 + Cl 17).
What state was shown for Na⁺–Cl⁻ distances of 240, 283, 500 and 1400 pm? Where did they settle after "Release"?→ 240 pmは「反発」、283 pmは「安定(結合長)」、500 pmは「引力」、1400 pmは「相互作用ほぼなし」(引力が最大値の10%未満)。手を離すと引き合って約283 pm(= 116 + 167)で落ち着いた。240 pm was "Repulsion", 283 pm "Stable (bond length)", 500 pm "Attraction", and 1400 pm "Almost no interaction" (attraction below 10% of its maximum). After release they pulled together and settled at about 283 pm (= 116 + 167).
In covalent mode at the bond length of 199 pm, how many shared pairs were there, and how many outer electrons did each Cl have?→ 共有電子対は1組(2個)。 One shared pair (2 electrons). Each Cl has 3 lone pairs (6) plus the 2 shared electrons, giving 8 outer electrons (an octet). When far apart, such as 600 pm, there are 0 shared pairs and each Cl has 7 (1 unpaired electron).
In metallic mode, how did the positive ions and free electrons change when you changed the temperature?→ 陽イオンは格子点のまわりで振動するだけで、最大変位は10 Kで約6 pm、360 Kで約39 pm(間隔372 pm)と大きくなるが、格子からは離れない。 The positive ions only vibrate around their lattice points; the maximum displacement grows from about 6 pm at 10 K to about 39 pm at 360 K (spacing 372 pm), but they never leave the lattice. Only the free electrons move through the gaps; their speed is about 0.18× at 10 K and 1.10× at 360 K compared with 300 K.

Think further

Why does Cl⁻ become larger than the Cl atom, while Na⁺ becomes smaller than the Na atom?→ Naは最外殻(M殻)の電子1個を失うと電子殻が1つ減り(2,8)、さらに陽子11個が電子10個を引くので小さくなる。 When Na loses its single M-shell electron, it loses a whole shell (2,8), and 11 protons now pull on only 10 electrons, so it gets smaller. Cl gains an electron (2,8,8), so repulsion between electrons increases and 17 protons pull on 18 electrons, so the hold on each is weaker and it gets larger.
Use the metallic-bond model in this simulation to explain why metals conduct electricity well.→ 金属では価電子が特定の原子に属さない自由電子となり、陽イオンの格子のすき間を自由に動ける。 In a metal, the valence electrons become free electrons that do not belong to any one atom and can move freely through the gaps in the lattice of positive ions. When a voltage is applied, these free electrons drift in one direction, which is the electric current. The positive ions only vibrate at their lattice points and do not carry the current.

Electrons are drawn as dots on shells (a simplified model); forces use a Born-type potential for the ionic bond and a Morse potential for the covalent bond. In metallic mode, both ion vibration and electron speed scale with √T, but real free-electron speeds in metals hardly depend on temperature (the on-screen notes also say this). The "Temperature" slider also affects the small thermal jiggle of the pair in ionic and covalent modes.
