Kmax vs. Frequency: Measuring Planck's Constant like Millikan
Students understand that the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons depends only on the light's frequency, Kmax = hν − W, so the Kmax–ν graph for every metal is a straight line with the same slope, Planck's constant h, and only the intercept (threshold frequency ν₀) changes with the work function.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Suppose 600 nm light hitting zinc (W = 4.3 eV) gives no electrons. Do you think electrons will come out if you make the light as intense as possible?💡 光子1個のエネルギーは何で決まるでしょうか。 What decides the energy of one photon? When you raise the intensity, what changes about the photons?
If you plot Kmax against frequency ν for cesium and for zinc, how do you think the slopes of the two lines will compare?💡 Kmax = hν − W In Kmax = hν − W, which quantity depends on the metal?

In the starting state ("Cs 1.9eV", "① Wavelength λ" = 400 nm), read "Photon E = hν" and "Kmax = hν − W". Then set "② Light intensity I" to 10 and to 1, and compare "Emitted electrons" and "Max electron speed".
Select "Zn 4.3eV", set λ = 600 nm and I = 10, and look at the status bar and the vacuum chamber. Press "Measure (record point)" in this state.
Go back to "Cs 1.9eV" and press "Auto sweep". Watch points appear on the graph as λ changes from 700 nm to 200 nm, then read the slope a and the ν₀ intercept in the fit box below.
Then run "Auto sweep" for "Zn 4.3eV" (and "Na 2.4eV" if there is time), and compare the slopes and intercepts of the lines on the same graph.
Select "Pt 6.3eV" and set λ = 200 nm (the shortest) to see whether there is emission. Finally press "Reset" to clear the data points.
Check
What were the photon energy for λ = 400 nm and Kmax for cesium?→ 光子は 3.10 eV(= 1240/400)、セシウムの Kmax は 3.10 − 1.9 = 1.20 eV。 6.50×10⁵ m/s。The photon has 3.10 eV (= 1240/400), and for cesium Kmax = 3.10 − 1.9 = 1.20 eV. The max electron speed is about 6.50×10⁵ m/s.
When I was changed from 1 to 10, what changed and what did not?→ 放出電子の数は毎秒1個から10個に増えたが、Kmax(1.20 eV)と電子の最大速さ(6.50×10⁵ m/s)は変わらなかった。 Emitted electrons went from 1 to 10 per second, but Kmax (1.20 eV) and the max electron speed (6.50×10⁵ m/s) stayed the same. Intensity sets the NUMBER of photons, not the energy of each one.
What was shown when 600 nm light with I = 10 hit zinc?→ 「放出なし hν<W(2.07 < 4.3 eV)— 強度を上げても電子は出ない」と表示され、電子は1個も出ず、「測定」を押しても点は記録されなかった。 It showed "No emission: hν<W (2.07 < 4.3 eV) — brighter light still gives no electrons". Not a single electron came out, and pressing "Measure" recorded no point. Zinc's threshold is ν₀ = 10.40×10¹⁴ Hz (λ ≤ 288 nm).
What slopes and ν₀ intercepts did the auto sweeps give for cesium and zinc?→ 傾きはどちらも a = 4.136×10⁻¹⁵ eV·s(h = 6.626×10⁻³⁴ J·s)で平行な直線になった。 Both slopes were a = 4.136×10⁻¹⁵ eV·s (h = 6.626×10⁻³⁴ J·s), giving parallel lines. The ν₀ intercepts differed: 4.59×10¹⁴ Hz for cesium and 10.40×10¹⁴ Hz for zinc, giving W = hν₀ = 1.90 eV and 4.30 eV.
Think further
With platinum (W = 6.3 eV), no electrons came out anywhere in this device's range (200–700 nm). Why? What light would be needed?→ 最短の200 nmでも光子のエネルギーは 6.20 eV で、W = 6.3 eV に届かないから。λ ≤ 約197 nm(ν ≥ 15.23×10¹⁴ Hz)のさらに短い紫外線が必要。Even at the shortest wavelength, 200 nm, a photon carries only 6.20 eV, less than W = 6.3 eV. Shorter ultraviolet light with λ ≤ about 197 nm (ν ≥ 15.23×10¹⁴ Hz) is needed.
If Kmax doubles, does the electron's speed also double?→ ならない。 No. Since K = ½mv², v = √(2K/m), so speed is proportional to √Kmax; doubling Kmax makes the speed about 1.41 times larger. In the simulation the electrons' drawn speed also scales with √Kmax (see "v ∝ √Kmax" above the chamber).
Common misconceptions
Brighter light gives electrons more energy." Intensity only increases the number of electrons; Kmax is set by the frequency (wavelength) alone.
Even low-frequency light will eventually eject electrons if it is bright enough or shines long enough." If hν < W, not a single electron is emitted, even at maximum intensity.

The model uses a quantum efficiency of 1 (one electron per photon) and draws only maximum-energy electrons, so the data points lie exactly on a line with no error. In Millikan's real experiment, Kmax is found from the stopping voltage (Kmax = eV₀) and the data have measurement errors. The work functions (e.g. Cs 1.9 eV) are typical values.
