Predict (before you touch anything)
If the anode is made lower in potential than the cathode (a reverse voltage), what do you think happens to the emitted electrons' motion and to the ammeter reading?💡 負の電荷をもつ電子が、電位の低い方へ進むときに受ける力の向きを考えましょう。 Think about the direction of the force on a negatively charged electron heading toward lower potential. Not every electron leaves with the same kinetic energy.
If the light intensity is doubled, do you think the stopping voltage (the reverse voltage at which the current just becomes zero) changes?💡 強度を上げると「光子の数」と「光子1個のエネルギー」のどちらが変わるのでしょうか。When intensity increases, which changes: the number of photons or the energy of each photon?

In the starting state (Wavelength of light λ = 400 nm, Light intensity 50, Anode–cathode voltage V = +0.0 V), read Photon energy E = 3.10 eV, Max kinetic energy Kmax = 1.00 eV, Stopping voltage V_stop = 1.00 V and Ammeter I = 5.00 nA.
Move "Anode–cathode voltage V" to −0.5 V, −1.2 V and +2.0 V, and compare how electrons turn back between the plates and the Ammeter I reading.
Press "Auto sweep" to draw the I–V graph from V = −5.0 V to +3.0 V. Then set "Light intensity" to 100 and press "Auto sweep" again.
Set "Wavelength of light λ" to 300 nm, read E, Kmax and V_stop, run "Auto sweep", and check whether the point where the current reaches zero lies on the dashed theory line (−V_stop).
Set "Wavelength of light λ" to 650 nm, "Light intensity" to 100 and V to +3.0 V, and check whether any electrons come out and what Ammeter I reads.
Check
With λ = 400 nm and intensity 50, what was the current at V = −0.5 V, −1.2 V and +2.0 V?→ −0.5 V で 2.50 nA(運動エネルギーの小さい電子は途中で引き返す)、−1.2 V で 0.00 nA(|V| が V_stop = 1.00 V 以上なのでどの電子も陽極に届かない)、+2.0 V で 5.00 nA(飽和電流)だった。2.50 nA at −0.5 V (slower electrons turn back on the way), 0.00 nA at −1.2 V (|V| is above V_stop = 1.00 V, so no electron reaches the anode), and 5.00 nA at +2.0 V (saturation current).
When intensity went from 50 to 100, what changed on the I–V graph and what did not?→ 飽和電流は 5.00 nA から 10.00 nA に 2 倍になったが、電流が 0 になる電圧(−1.00 V、V_stop = 1.00 V)は変わらなかった。The saturation current doubled from 5.00 nA to 10.00 nA, but the voltage where the current becomes zero (−1.00 V, V_stop = 1.00 V) did not change.
At λ = 300 nm, what were E, Kmax and V_stop? Does Kmax = E − W hold?→ E = 4.13 eV、Kmax = 2.03 eV、V_stop = 2.03 V。 E = 4.13 eV, Kmax = 2.03 eV, V_stop = 2.03 V. Since 4.13 − 2.1 = 2.03 eV, it holds, and the measured points reached zero at the −2.03 V theory line.
With λ = 650 nm, intensity 100 and V = +3.0 V, did any current flow?→ 流れなかった(I = 0.00 nA、Kmax は「放出なし」)。 No (I = 0.00 nA, Kmax shows "no emission"). E = 1.91 eV is less than W = 2.1 eV because the light is longer than λ0 = 590.5 nm, so no electrons come out even with high intensity and a forward voltage.

Why does the reverse voltage V_stop at which the current just becomes zero give the maximum kinetic energy as Kmax = eV_stop?→ 逆向き電圧 V の間を進むと電子は電場に逆らって eV の仕事をされ、運動エネルギーが eV 減る。 Crossing a reverse voltage V, an electron does work against the field and loses kinetic energy eV. The current stops when even the fastest electron (Kmax) cannot reach the anode, which happens when Kmax = eV_stop, so measuring the zero-current voltage gives Kmax.
If you measured V_stop at several wavelengths and plotted eV_stop against frequency f, what shape would you get, and what could you learn from it?→ eV_stop = hf − W Since eV_stop = hf − W, it is a straight line. The slope gives Planck's constant h, the horizontal intercept gives the threshold frequency (W/h), and the vertical intercept gives −W.
Common misconceptions
Brighter light needs a bigger reverse voltage to stop the electrons." Intensity only increases the current (the number of electrons); the stopping voltage does not change.
0。"Applying a voltage makes current flow for any wavelength." When λ > λ0 no electrons are emitted at all, so the current is zero whatever the voltage.

The model assumes one photon → one electron (quantum efficiency 1), with starting kinetic energies spread evenly from 0 to Kmax and electrons flying straight toward the anode. So on the reverse-voltage side the current falls in a straight line and is already saturated at V = 0 (in a real phototube the spread of emission directions makes the curve rounded and saturation needs a positive voltage). The ammeter shows an expected value, I = 0.1 nA × intensity × fraction reaching the anode. The cathode is fixed as cesium (W = 2.1 eV).
