Students understand that uranium-238 becomes stable lead-206 through 8 alpha decays (mass number −4, atomic number −2) and 6 beta-minus decays (mass number unchanged, atomic number +1), and that this path appears on the N-Z chart as moves in fixed directions.

Predict (before you touch anything)

On a chart with neutron number N across and proton number Z up, which way do you think a nuclide's dot moves in an alpha decay and in a beta-minus decay?💡 α粒子は陽子何個と中性子何個からできているでしょうか。 How many protons and neutrons make up an alpha particle? In beta-minus decay, what inside the nucleus changes into what?
How many alpha decays and how many beta-minus decays do you think it takes for U-238 (A = 238, Z = 92) to become Pb-206 (A = 206, Z = 82)?💡 質量数を変えるのはどちらの崩壊だけでしょうか。 Which kind of decay is the only one that changes the mass number? Start from the difference in mass number.

Try it

Press "Pause" to stop the animation and check that "View" is set to "Step by step (one decay at a time)". In the panel, read U-238's Z=92, N=146, A=238 and half-life of about 4.47 billion years.
Press "Next nuclide ▶" one step at a time and, for U-238 → Th-234 (α decay), Th-234 → Pa-234m (β⁻ decay) and Pa-234m → U-234 (β⁻ decay), note which way the dot moves and the mass-number and atomic-number checks (✓) in the equation.
Press "Play" and follow the series to Pb-206, adjusting the "Speed" slider as needed. Along the way, look at the half-lives shown for Ra-226 and Rn-222.
Switch "View" to "Whole series" and look at the overall equation (8 α decays, 6 β⁻ decays) and where the series lies relative to the β-stability band and the gray stable nuclides.
Tap (or hover over) table rows or dots on the chart to look up and compare the half-lives and next decays of nuclides such as Po-214, Pb-210 and Pb-206.

Check

On the N-Z chart, which way did the dot move in an alpha decay and in a beta-minus decay?→ α崩壊では左下へ(ΔN = −2, ΔZ = −2)、β⁻崩壊では左上へ(ΔN = −1, ΔZ = +1)動いた。In alpha decay it moved down-left (ΔN = −2, ΔZ = −2); in beta-minus decay it moved up-left (ΔN = −1, ΔZ = +1).
How did the mass number and atomic number change in U-238 → Th-234 and in Th-234 → Pa-234m?→ U-238 → Th-234(α崩壊)は 238 = 234 + 4、92 = 90 + 2 で質量数 −4、原子番号 −2。 U-238 → Th-234 (α decay): 238 = 234 + 4 and 92 = 90 + 2, so mass number −4 and atomic number −2. Th-234 → Pa-234m (β⁻ decay): mass number stays 234 and atomic number goes from 90 to 91 (+1), emitting an electron and an antineutrino.
How many alpha and beta-minus decays occur in the whole series? Can you confirm by calculation that this gives Pb-206?→ α崩壊 8回・β⁻崩壊 6回。 8 alpha decays and 6 beta-minus decays. Mass number 238 − 4×8 = 206 and atomic number 92 − 2×8 + 6 = 82, which matches Pb-206.
What were the half-lives of U-238, Ra-226, Rn-222 and Po-214?→ U-238 は約44.7億年、Ra-226 は約1600年、Rn-222 は約3.8日、Po-214 は約164マイクロ秒で、核種によって桁違いに異なる。 U-238 about 4.47 billion years, Ra-226 about 1,600 years, Rn-222 about 3.8 days, Po-214 about 164 μs — they differ by enormous factors. Pb-206 is stable and does not decay.

Think further

If only alpha decays happened, which way would the nuclide drift relative to the β-stability line? In heavy nuclei the band has N:Z around 1.5, but alpha decay removes equal numbers (2 and 2) of neutrons and protons, so as the nucleus gets lighter it ends up with too many neutrons (drifting to the neutron-rich side, below-right of the band). Beta-minus decay turns a neutron into a proton, lowering N/Z and bringing the nuclide back toward the band.
Why does uranium ore in the ground keep releasing radon (Rn-222, half-life about 3.8 days) for a very long time?→ Rn-222 自体はすぐ減るが、半減期が約44.7億年と非常に長い U-238 から系列を通じて次々に新しく作られ続けるから。Rn-222 itself disappears quickly, but it is continually produced again through the series from U-238, whose half-life is very long (about 4.47 billion years).

Because the horizontal axis is the neutron number N, beta-minus decay appears as an up-left move (charts with Z on the horizontal axis show different directions). Only the main path is shown; small branches such as the alpha branch of Bi-214 are omitted. The β-stability band is a guide drawn from a semi-empirical formula; the half-lives are real measured values, but the animation speed has nothing to do with real time.
