Spring Overstretch Lab (Elastic Limit and Balance)
Predict (before you touch anything)
If you keep adding weights one at a time, do you think the spring's extension will keep increasing at the same rate forever?💡 ばねを強く引っ張りすぎると、ばねの形はどうなるでしょうか。 What happens to the shape of a spring if you pull it much too hard? Think about springs you have seen in everyday life.
After stretching a spring a lot, if you remove all the weights, do you think it will always return to its original length?💡 「弾性限界(最大安全のび)」という言葉の意味から考えてみましょう。Think about what the words "elastic limit (max safe extension)" mean.
Try it
Keep "Spring stiffness" at "medium" and "Elastic limit (max safe extension)" at 60mm. Move the "Number of weights" slider to 1 → 2 → 3, one step at a time. Each time the spring stops, record the "Ext." value at the top left and the point on the graph, and look at the arrows on the weights (Gravity and Spring pull).
Continue to 4 → 5 → 6 weights. Record how the points leave the blue Hooke's law line and turn red, and how much the extension grows for each extra 2N.
With 6 weights hanging, press "Remove weights". After the spring stops, check its length, the "original" and "ext. = 0" lines, and the message at the bottom.
Hang 2 weights again and read the extension measured from the new "ext. = 0" line.
Press "Use a new spring". With 0 weights, change "Spring stiffness" to "stiff" or "soft", then hang 1 weight and compare the extensions. Finally, set "Spring stiffness" back to "medium", hang 3 weights (exactly at the elastic limit), press "Remove weights", and check whether it returns to its natural length.
Check
For the "medium" spring, what were the extensions with 1, 2, and 3 weights? How were the points arranged on the graph?→ 2.0N で 20mm、4.0N で 40mm、6.0N で 60mm。 20mm at 2.0N, 40mm at 4.0N, and 60mm at 6.0N. Two weights gave exactly twice the extension of one, and the points lay on the blue straight line through the origin (extension proportional to force).
When the weights were at rest, what did the gravity arrow and the spring-pull arrow look like? What was shown while the spring was moving?→ 静止しているときは、重力(下向き)とばねが引く力(上向き)が同じ直線上で逆向き・同じ長さ(例: どちらも 12.0N)に描かれ、「同じ長さ=つり合い」と表示された。 At rest, gravity (down) and the spring pull (up) were drawn on the same line, opposite in direction and equal in length (for example, both 12.0N), with "Same length = balanced". While moving, no arrows were shown, only "Moving…", and the message said the forces are not balanced while the weights move.
What happened to the extension and the points with 4, 5, and 6 weights?→ のびは 70mm、80mm、90mm になり、点は赤くなって比例直線(点線の延長)より下に外れた。 The extension became 70mm, 80mm, and 90mm, and the points turned red and fell below the Hooke's law line (its dashed extension). Up to the elastic limit each extra 2N added 20mm, but after it each 2N added only 10mm, so the rate changed.
When you removed the weights after hanging 6, what happened to the spring? What was the extension when you then hung 2 weights?→ 自然長(60mm)に戻らず、18mm のびたまま残った(「永久伸び +18mm」)。 It did not return to its natural length (60mm) and stayed 18mm longer ("permanent stretch +18mm"). This length became the new "ext. = 0" reference, and with 2 weights it stretched 40mm from there. In contrast, after hanging 3 weights (60mm, within the elastic limit), it went back to its original natural length.
Think further
A spring scale usually says "maximum ○ N". Why should you not weigh anything heavier than that?→ 弾性限界を超えるとのびが力に比例しなくなるので、目盛りどおりの値が読めなくなる。 Beyond the elastic limit the extension is no longer proportional to the force, so the scale markings no longer give correct readings. A permanent stretch also remains and shifts the zero point, so later measurements of light objects are wrong too.
Why does the same single weight (2.0N) stretch a "stiff" spring and a "soft" spring by different amounts? And how does the force needed to reach the elastic limit (60mm) change for a stiffer spring?→ ばね定数(1mmのばすのに必要な力)が違うから。 Because their spring constants (force needed per 1mm of stretch) differ. The stiff spring (0.20N/mm) stretched 10mm and the soft one (0.05N/mm) 40mm. A stiffer spring needs a larger force to reach 60mm (stiff: 12N, medium: 6N, soft: 3N).
Common misconceptions
A spring always returns to its original length when the force is removed, no matter how hard it was pulled." Beyond the elastic limit a permanent stretch remains, and it does not return to its original natural length.
A spring's extension is always proportional to the force." Proportionality (Hooke's law) holds only up to the elastic limit; beyond it, the points leave the straight line.

The curve beyond the elastic limit (half the extension per 2N) and the amount of permanent stretch (60% of the excess) are a simple model used by this work. Real springs often stretch more easily past the limit, so focus students on "the points leave the line" and "it does not go back". Points are recorded only when the weights come to rest, so have students move the slider one step at a time and wait. Moving the stiffness or elastic-limit slider swaps in a new spring, so set the weights to 0 before changing them for a fair comparison.
