Half-Life Simulator: Random Decay of Nuclei
Students understand that each radioactive nucleus decays at an unpredictable, random moment, yet a large number of nuclei together follow a clear rule: the number of parent nuclei left halves every half-life T, N = N₀×(1/2)^(t/T).

Predict (before you touch anything)
You have 400 nuclei with a half-life of T = 2.0 s. About how many parent nuclei do you think remain after 2.0 s, 4.0 s and 6.0 s? Do you think they will all have decayed after 6.0 s?💡 「半減期」という言葉の意味を、最初の数ではなく「そのときに残っている数」に対して考えてみましょう。Think about what "half-life" means when applied to the number left at that moment, not to the starting number.
Do you think decays happen with half of the nuclei decaying all at once every T seconds, or at scattered, random moments?💡 一つの原子核は、自分がいつ生まれたかや、周りの原子核の様子を「知っている」でしょうか。Does a single nucleus "know" how old it is or what the nuclei around it are doing?
Try it
In the starting state (Half-life T = 2.0 s, Starting nuclei N₀ = 400, Speed ×1.0), watch when blue parent nuclei in the sample turn into red daughter nuclei, and check that "Parent + daughter" always stays at 400 = N₀.
Set "Speed" to ×4.0 and let the run reach the end (t ≈ 15 s, "Status: finished"). Compare the green measured N(t), the yellow theory curve and the orange dashed guide at t = T, and read the values of "N/N₀ @T,2T,3T".
Set "Starting nuclei N₀" to 1000 and run to the end, then set it to 100 and run again. Compare how far the "N/N₀ @T,2T,3T" values are from the theory values .500/.250/.125.
Change "Half-life T" to 1.0 s and watch how the decay speed and the spacing of the vertical lines (1T, 2T, …) change. Then press the "x-axis: t [s]" button to switch to "x-axis: t/T" and check whether the faint past curves overlap the current curve.
Check
Did the nuclei decay in a fixed order or all at once? Did the total number of nuclei change when they decayed?→ 試料のあちこちでばらばらのタイミングで青から赤に変わり、一斉には崩壊しなかった。 Nuclei turned from blue to red at scattered places and random moments, not all at once. Decayed nuclei stay as daughter nuclei, so "Parent + daughter" always stayed at N₀ (400).
With T = 2.0 s and N₀ = 400, what fraction N/N₀ remained at t = T, 2T and 3T?→ 例えば 0.525/0.228/0.100 のように、およそ 1/2・1/4・1/8(理論 .500/.250/.125)に近い値になった(値は試行ごとに少し変わる)。For example 0.525/0.228/0.100 — roughly 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 (theory .500/.250/.125). The values change a little from run to run.
Which matched the theory curve better, N₀ = 1000 or N₀ = 100?→ N₀ = 1000 の方がよく一致した(例:0.508/0.245/0.103)。 N₀ = 1000 matched better (e.g. 0.508/0.245/0.103). With N₀ = 100 the values were further off (e.g. 0.540/0.230/0.110 or 0.450/0.280/0.120) and the graph looked more jagged and step-like.
What changed when the half-life T went from 2.0 s to 1.0 s? What happened when the x-axis was switched to t/T?→ 崩壊が速く進み、1T, 2T, … Decay happened faster and the 1T, 2T, … lines moved closer together. With the x-axis set to t/T, past curves with different T or N₀ fell almost on the same exponential curve.
Think further
Why does the whole sample decrease so regularly, by half each half-life, even though each nucleus decays randomly?→ どの母核も同じ確率(単位時間あたり λ = ln2/T)で独立に崩壊するので、崩壊する数は「そのとき残っている数」に比例する。 Every parent nucleus decays independently with the same probability (λ = ln2/T per unit time), so the number that decays is proportional to the number still left. With many nuclei, random fluctuations (about 1/√N) average out, and the number left approaches N₀×(1/2)^(t/T) (law of large numbers).
When only one nucleus is left, can you say whether it will decay within the next T seconds?→ 言えない。 No. You can only say that the probability it decays within T seconds is 1/2; how long it has already survived does not matter.
Common misconceptions
After two half-lives everything is gone." In fact 1/4 remains after 2T and 1/8 after 3T — each half-life removes half of what is left.
Half of the nuclei decay all at once at each half-life." Each decay happens at a random moment; the regular pattern appears only when many nuclei are averaged.

Each nucleus is tested with a random number at each time step with probability 1−exp(−λΔt), so results differ slightly every run (pooling class results shows the average approaching the theory). Daughter nuclei are treated as stable, and the 0.5–5 s half-lives are chosen for easy viewing. Moving the T or N₀ slider immediately starts a new run, and the previous curve stays as a faint line scaled as N/N₀.
