Students understand that only positive ions whose speed equals v₀ = E/B, where the electric force qE and the magnetic (Lorentz) force qvB balance in opposite directions, travel straight through the exit slit, and that v₀ does not depend on the ion's mass or charge.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Between the plates (top +, bottom −, so the electric field points down) there is also a magnetic field pointing into the page. For a positive ion moving to the right, which way do you think the electric force and the magnetic force each point?💡 電場による力は速さに関係するでしょうか。 Does the electric force depend on speed? For the magnetic force, use Fleming's left-hand rule (or F = qv×B), taking the current direction as the direction the positive ion moves.
If there is a speed at which an ion goes perfectly straight, do you think that speed is different for a light ion (H⁺) and a heavy ion (Ar⁺)?💡 「まっすぐ進む」ということは、2つの力の間にどんな関係があるときでしょうか。Think about what relationship between the two forces is needed for the ion to move in a straight line.

Try it

In the starting state (Entry speed v = 3.00×10⁵ m/s, Magnetic field B = 0.10 T, Electric field E = 4.00×10⁴ V/m, H⁺), read E/B = 4.00×10⁵ m/s at the top, compare the qE and qvB bars and the orange and light-blue arrows on the ion (direction and length), and watch which way the path bends.
Press "Set v = E/B" and check the values of qE and qvB (both 6.41×10⁻¹⁵ N) and that the green path goes through the exit slit to the Detector.
Move the "Entry speed" slider up to about v = 6.00×10⁵ m/s and compare which way the red path bends (toward the + plate or the − plate) with the blue path from step 1.
Switch "Ion type (mass, charge)" to He²⁺ and then Ar⁺, pressing "Set v = E/B" each time, and confirm that the value of E/B does not change and the ion goes straight.
Set "Magnetic field B" to 0.20 T and confirm that E/B changes to 2.00×10⁵ m/s, then turn "Mixed speeds" ON and watch how, out of ions with many different speeds, only those that go straight pass through the exit.

Check

In which direction do the electric force qE and the Lorentz force qvB on the positive ion point?→ qE(橙の矢印)は下向き(−極板の方)、qvB(水色の矢印)は上向き(+極板の方)で、2つの力は逆向きになっている。qE (orange arrow) points down (toward the − plate) and qvB (light-blue arrow) points up (toward the + plate), so the two forces are opposite.
When v < E/B (e.g. 3.00×10⁵ m/s) and when v > E/B (e.g. 6.00×10⁵ m/s), which way does the ion bend?→ v < E/B When v < E/B, qE > qvB (6.41×10⁻¹⁵ N > 4.81×10⁻¹⁵ N), so it bends down (toward the − plate); when v > E/B, qvB > qE, so it bends up (toward the + plate) — the opposite way.
After pressing "Set v = E/B", how do the sizes of the two forces compare, and how does the ion move?→ qE qE and qvB have the same size (6.41×10⁻¹⁵ N) and balance, so the net force is zero and the ion goes straight through the exit slit.
Did the straight-line speed E/B change between H⁺, He²⁺ and Ar⁺? What happened to E/B when B was set to 0.20 T?→ どのイオンでも E/B = 4.00×10⁵ m/s のままで直進した。 For every ion, E/B stayed at 4.00×10⁵ m/s and the ion went straight. Doubling B to 0.20 T halved E/B to 2.00×10⁵ m/s.

Think further

Why does the straight-line speed v₀ = E/B depend on neither the ion's mass nor its charge?→ 直進の条件は力のつり合い qE = qvB で、両辺の q が約分されて v = E/B となるから。 The condition for going straight is the force balance qE = qvB; q appears on both sides and cancels, giving v = E/B. The mass m does not appear in the balance; it only affects how strongly an ion bends when the forces do not balance (acceleration a = F/m).
What would you expect for a negative ion (charge −e) entering at the same speed v = E/B?→ 電場による力とローレンツ力がどちらも逆向き(qE が上、qvB が下)になるが、大きさは等しいままなのでやはりつり合い、直進する。 Both forces reverse (qE points up, qvB points down), but their sizes are still equal, so they still balance and the ion goes straight. (This simulation only uses positive ions.)

The motion is computed numerically (Boris method); gravity, forces between ions and relativistic effects are ignored. Because the exit slit has a width (±2 mm), heavy ions such as Ar⁺ bend less and can pass even when v is slightly off E/B — stress that the sharpness of the sorting depends on mass and charge, but the straight-line speed E/B itself does not. In "Mixed speeds" mode the speeds are chosen automatically between 0.4 and 1.6 times E/B; the "Entry speed" slider is not used.
