RLC Series Circuit Phasor Diagram
Students understand that in an RLC series circuit, taking the current as reference, V_R is in phase, V_L leads by 90° and V_C lags by 90° as rotating vectors (phasors) whose sum is the source voltage, and use this to see that the current leads below f₀ (capacitive), lags above f₀ (inductive), and is in phase with the voltage at f = f₀, where V_L and V_C cancel (and |V_L| = |V_C| = Q·V₀ can exceed the source voltage).

Predict (before you touch anything)
The source voltage amplitude is 10 V. Do you think the voltage across the coil or the capacitor in the series circuit could ever be larger than 10 V?💡 交流では、各素子の電圧は「大きさ」だけでなく「向き(位相)」をもつ矢印として足し合わせます。 In AC, each element's voltage is added as an arrow with both size and direction (phase), not just a size. What happens when you add arrows pointing in opposite directions?
When the frequency is low, do you think the current reaches its peak before the source voltage (leads) or after it (lags)?💡 周波数が低いとき、X_L=2πfL と X_C=1/(2πfC) のどちらが大きくなるかを考えましょう。Think about which is larger at low frequency: X_L = 2πfL or X_C = 1/(2πfC).

With the starting settings (Frequency f 954.9 Hz (0.600 f0), Resistance R 20.0 Ω, Capacitance C 1.00 µF), look at the directions of the I, VR, VL, VC and V arrows in the phasor diagram, and read the status line and the values of XL, XC, |Z|, I and Power factor cosθ.
Press the "Jump to resonance" button and check the VL and VC arrows, the directions of V and I, and the values |VL|, |VC| and |VR+VL+VC|. Also look at the v(t) and i(t) waves below.
Move the "Frequency f" slider to about 2.39 kHz (1.50 f0) and compare with 0.6 f0: which side of I the V arrow is on, and how the status line changes. Move the slider slowly to see that the phase changes continuously.
Press "Jump to resonance" again, then lower "Resistance R" from 20 Ω to 5 Ω, and observe how Q, |VL| and |VC|, and the arrow lengths in the phasor diagram change.
Press "Pause" to stop the phasors turning, check the angles between the arrows, then press "Play" to resume.
Check
At f = 0.600 f₀ (about 955 Hz), which was larger, XL or XC, and did the current lead or lag the source voltage?→ XL=60.00 Ω、XC=166.67 Ω で XC のほうが大きく、「容量性」で電流が電源電圧より約79.4°進んでいました。 XL = 60.00 Ω and XC = 166.67 Ω, so XC was larger; the circuit was "Capacitive" and the current led the source voltage by about 79.4°. The V arrow was nearly 90° behind I (on the clockwise side), and cosθ ≈ 0.18.
At the resonant frequency (about 1.592 kHz), what were XL and XC, |Z|, I, and the phase between V and I?→ XL=XC=100.00 Ω となって VL と VC の矢印が同じ長さで逆向きになり打ち消し合いました。|Z|=20.00 Ω(=R)、I=500.00 mA で最大、位相 θ=0°・cosθ=1.0000 で、V は VR・I と同じ向き(同相)でした。XL = XC = 100.00 Ω, so the VL and VC arrows were equal in length and opposite, cancelling each other. |Z| = 20.00 Ω (equal to R), I = 500.00 mA (the maximum), phase θ = 0° and cosθ = 1.0000, with V pointing the same way as VR and I (in phase).
At f = 1.50 f₀ (about 2.39 kHz), did the current lead or lag?→ XL≈150 Ω が XC≈67 Ω より大きく、「誘導性」で電流が電源電圧より約76.5°遅れていました。 XL ≈ 150 Ω was larger than XC ≈ 67 Ω, so the circuit was "Inductive" and the current lagged the source voltage by about 76.5°. The V arrow was on the counterclockwise (leading) side of I. Sweeping from 0.6 f₀ to 1.5 f₀, the phase changed continuously from −79° through 0° to +77°.
Staying at resonance, when R was lowered from 20 Ω to 5 Ω, what were |VL| and |VC|? How do they compare with the source voltage?→ Q Q went from 5.00 to 20.00, and |VL| = |VC| rose from 50 V to 200 V (20 times V₀). Because they point in opposite directions and cancel, |VR+VL+VC| stayed at 10.000 V (= V₀).
Think further
At resonance, why can the source voltage be only 10 V when the coil voltage is as large as 200 V? Try to explain it in terms of energy as well.→ VL VL and VC are always opposite (180° out of phase), so at every instant they cancel when added, and the source only has to supply the resistor's voltage VR = V₀. Energy moves back and forth between the coil's magnetic energy and the capacitor's electric energy, and the source only replaces what the resistor turns into heat.
If C is changed from 1.00 µF to 0.25 µF, how does the circuit's behaviour change at the same frequency (1.592 kHz)? Think about why.→ f₀=1/(2π√(LC)) f₀ = 1/(2π√(LC)) doubles to about 3.18 kHz, so 1.592 kHz becomes 0.5 f₀; XC = 400 Ω is now larger than XL = 100 Ω, and the circuit is capacitive (current leads by about 89°). Resonance is decided by how XL compares with XC, not by f alone.
Common misconceptions
In a series circuit the sizes of the element voltages add up to the source voltage." → In AC, voltages with different phases add as vectors (phasors), so |VR| + |VL| + |VC| does not equal the source voltage, and an element's voltage can even exceed it.
Current and voltage always peak at the same time." → In general there is a phase difference; they are in phase only at resonance (f = f₀).

L = 10 mH and V₀ = 10 V are fixed, and the rotation is shown thousands of times slower than real time. The voltage arrows share one scale so their length ratios are correct, while the current I is drawn on its own scale. Changing C changes f₀ and the frequency slider's range (0.2f₀–3f₀), but f itself stays the same, so have students watch the f/f₀ readout.
