Free Oscillation in an RLC Circuit: Energy Exchange
Students understand that when a charged capacitor is connected to a coil and a resistor, the charge oscillates as energy passes back and forth between the electric energy ½CV² and the magnetic energy ½LI², while the total energy steadily decreases as Joule heat in the resistor, and that once R reaches the critical resistance Rc = 2√(L/C) or more the circuit no longer oscillates.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When a charged capacitor is switched onto a coil, do you think the capacitor voltage will simply fall to 0 and stop, or will it do something else?💡 コイルには電流の変化を妨げるはたらき(自己誘導)があります。 A coil opposes changes in current (self-induction). At the instant the capacitor voltage reaches 0, is a current still flowing?
As the resistance R is made larger and larger, how do you think the way the voltage changes will be different?💡 抵抗はエネルギーを熱として奪います。 A resistor takes energy away as heat. What might happen if a lot of energy is taken away during each swing?
Try it
With the starting settings (R 20.0 Ω, L 100 mH, C 10 μF), press "Restart" and, after switch S moves from A to B, watch the v_C(t) (blue) and i(t) (orange) waves, the dashed "Envelope ±V₀e^(−Rt/2L)", and the ω₀, ω_d and T_d readouts. Use "Pause" and "Play" as needed.
In the "Energy" bars (½CV², ½LI², Total, Heat) and the "Energy over time" graph below, watch ½CV² and ½LI² take turns being large and see how the total changes.
Raise R from 20 Ω to 100 Ω and record how ω_d, T_d and the decay of the envelope change.
Press "Set R = Rc" for critical damping (R = 200 Ω), then move the R slider to about 600 Ω (overdamped), and compare how the waves stop oscillating and how quickly they return to 0.
Set R back to 20 Ω, then change L from 100 mH to 400 mH (four times), and observe how ω₀, T_d and the envelope's decay change.
Check
With the starting settings (R = 20 Ω, L = 100 mH, C = 10 μF), what were ω₀, ω_d, the oscillation period T_d and the critical resistance Rc?→ ω₀=1000 rad/s、ω_d≈995 rad/s、T_d≈6.31 ms、Rc=200 Ω でした。 ω₀ = 1000 rad/s, ω_d ≈ 995 rad/s, T_d ≈ 6.31 ms and Rc = 200 Ω. The spacing between peaks on the graph (the T_d bar) is also about 6.3 ms.
How did ½CV² and ½LI² change? What about the total energy?→ 一方がほぼ0のときにもう一方が最大になり、交互に受け渡されていました(電流が0のとき電圧が極大)。 When one was nearly zero the other was at its maximum, so energy was handed back and forth (the voltage peaks when the current is zero). The total never increased and kept decreasing, with the lost energy moving into the "Heat" bar until heat was nearly 100% (the display shows "decreasing ✓").
When R was raised from 20 Ω to 100 Ω, how did the period and the rate of decay change?→ ω_d ω_d fell from about 995 to 866 rad/s and T_d grew from about 6.31 ms to 7.26 ms. α = R/(2L) went from 100/s to 500/s, so the envelope e^(−Rt/2L) shrank faster.
What did the waves look like at R = Rc (200 Ω) and at R ≈ 600 Ω? In both cases v_C approached 0 without changing sign, a non-oscillating curve, and the label changed to "Critically damped" and "Overdamped". Critical damping settled fastest; with overdamping (R/Rc = 3) the voltage fell slowly (about 0.8 V still remained at around 15 ms).
Think further
How does this circuit's oscillation correspond to a mass oscillating on a spring? What do L, C and R each correspond to?→ 電荷が変位、電流が速度に当たり、L は質量(慣性:電流の変化を妨げる)、1/C はばね定数(ためた電荷を押し戻す)、R は摩擦・空気抵抗(エネルギーを熱にする)に対応します。 Charge corresponds to displacement and current to velocity; L is like mass (inertia, opposing changes in current), 1/C is like the spring constant (pushing stored charge back), and R is like friction or air resistance (turning energy into heat). ½CV² (= q²/2C) matches elastic potential energy and ½LI² matches kinetic energy, so the energy exchange has the same form.
Why does the current keep flowing and charge the capacitor the other way, even at the instant the capacitor voltage is 0?→ その瞬間、エネルギーはコイルの磁気エネルギー ½LI² として蓄えられていて、電流は最大です。 At that instant the energy is stored as magnetic energy ½LI² in the coil, and the current is at its maximum. The coil produces an EMF that opposes changes in current, so the current cannot drop to zero at once; it keeps flowing and charges the capacitor with the opposite polarity.
Common misconceptions
A larger resistance just means fewer oscillations; it always oscillates somewhat." → Once R reaches Rc = 2√(L/C) or more, the oscillation disappears entirely and the voltage approaches 0 without oscillating.
The bigger the resistance, the faster it settles." → The fastest settling happens at critical damping (R = Rc); making R even larger (overdamping) makes it slower again.

The charging voltage is V₀ = 10 V, and moving any slider restarts the oscillation automatically. Playback is slowed to about 1/200 speed (this changes when L is larger), and the dots show the motion of positive charge (clockwise is positive). Solving the differential equation goes beyond the usual course, so treat the formulas for ω_d and Rc as things to check, and focus on the energy exchange and the steady decrease of the total.
