Neon Lamp RC Relaxation Oscillator
Students understand that repeated slow charging of a capacitor through a resistor and rapid discharging through a neon lamp produce regular flashing (oscillation), and that the period T = RC·ln((E−Vmaint)/(E−Vstrike)) = RC·ln2 is proportional to the time constant RC.

Predict (before you touch anything)
The power supply is DC (a steady 15 V), so why does the neon lamp keep flashing? How do you think the capacitor voltage Vc changes over time?💡 ネオン管は、電圧が 10 V に達すると光って電流を流し、5 V まで下がると消える。The neon lamp lights and conducts when its voltage reaches 10 V, and goes out when the voltage drops to 5 V.
If the resistance R is doubled, what happens to the time between flashes?💡 R R sets how large the current is while the capacitor charges.
Try it
With the default settings (Resistance R = 1.0 MΩ, Capacitance C = 2 µF, Playback speed ×1.0), press "Reset". Watch the Vc graph rise from 0 V to the Vstrike 10V line, the neon lamp turn "ON", and Vc drop suddenly to Vmaint 5V.
Lower "Playback speed" to about ×0.32. Compare the thin blue arrows while charging (battery → R → C) with the thick red arrows at the moment the lamp lights (C → neon lamp), and the "Charge" and "Discharge" current values at the top left and top right.
After a few flashes, record "Theoretical period T", "Measured period (between flashes)", "Measured charging time" and "Discharge time rC·ln2".
Set the "Resistance R" slider to 2.0 MΩ and compare τ = RC, the theoretical period T and the measured period. Then set "Capacitance C" to 4 µF and compare again.
Check
With the default settings, what is the time between flashes? How does it compare with the theory?→ τ = RC = 2.000 s で、理論周期 T = RC·ln2 = 1.386 s。 τ = RC = 2.000 s and the theoretical period T = RC·ln2 = 1.386 s. The measured period is also 1.386 s (= 1.0001 × T), almost the same. Only the first cycle takes longer, about 2.2 s, because the capacitor starts from 0 V.
About how large is the current through R while charging, and the neon lamp current at the moment it lights? How are their paths different?→ 充電中の R の電流は約 10 µA 以下(Vc = 5 V で約 10 µA、Vc が上がるほど小さくなる)。 While charging, the current in R is about 10 µA or less (about 10 µA at Vc = 5 V, smaller as Vc rises). When the lamp lights, its current peaks at 100 mA (= 10 V ÷ 100 Ω), which is very large. During charging, current flows battery → R → C; during discharging it flows from the + plate of C through the neon lamp and back to C.
What shape is the charging curve on the graph? Why does the discharge look almost vertical?→ 充電は E = 15V の線にだんだん近づく指数関数の曲線で、10 V に達したところで切れる(直線ではない)。 Charging follows an exponential curve that gradually approaches the E = 15V line, and it is cut off when it reaches 10 V (it is not a straight line). The discharge time constant rC (100 Ω × 2 µF) is tiny, and the discharge takes only rC·ln2 = 138.6 µs, so it looks vertical on a graph in seconds.
What happens to the period when R is set to 2.0 MΩ, and then when C is also set to 4 µF?→ R = 2.0 MΩ では τ = 4.000 s、T = 2.773 s と2倍になり、さらに C = 4 µF では τ = 8.000 s、T = 5.545 s とさらに2倍になる。 With R = 2.0 MΩ, τ = 4.000 s and T = 2.773 s, twice as long. With C = 4 µF as well, τ = 8.000 s and T = 5.545 s, twice again. The measured period matches, so the period is proportional to RC.
Think further
How can the formula T = RC·ln((E−Vmaint)/(E−Vstrike)) be derived? What would you expect to happen to the period if E were larger?→ 充電相では Vc(t) = E − (E − Vmaint)·e^(−t/RC)。 During charging, Vc(t) = E − (E − Vmaint)·e^(−t/RC). Setting Vc = Vstrike gives e^(−t/RC) = (E−Vstrike)/(E−Vmaint), so t = RC·ln((E−Vmaint)/(E−Vstrike)). For E = 15 V this is ln(10/5) = ln2. A larger E brings the ratio inside the logarithm closer to 1, so we expect a shorter period (E is fixed at 15 V in this simulation).
If the supply voltage E were smaller than Vstrike (10 V), would this circuit still flash?→ 点滅しない。 No. Vc only approaches E, so it never reaches 10 V and the lamp never lights. Oscillation requires E > Vstrike.
Common misconceptions
You need an AC supply to make a lamp flash." Even with a DC supply, the combination of capacitor charging and the neon lamp's threshold voltages (strike and maintain) produces oscillation by itself.
A capacitor charges at a constant rate." As Vc rises, the voltage across R falls and the current gets smaller, so charging slows down exponentially.

The neon lamp is a two-state model: it lights at 10 V, goes out at 5 V, and acts as a 100 Ω resistor while lit; E is fixed at 15 V. The real discharge lasts only a few hundred µs, so the lamp glows for about one frame, and its brightness shows the largest discharge current in that frame. Moving a slider does not reset the circuit, so let it flash a few times after a change before reading the measured period.
