Spring Connection Balance Lab

Students understand that a spring's extension is proportional to the force on it, and—linking this to balanced forces—that with two identical springs in series each spring carries the whole weight so the total extension doubles, while in parallel they share the weight so each spring stretches only half as much.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you hang two identical springs one below the other (in series), how do you think the total stretch compares with one spring alone? How much force do you think pulls on the upper spring and on the lower spring?💡 上のばねは、下のばねとおもりをまとめて支えています。 The upper spring holds up both the lower spring and the weight. What is the lower spring holding up?
If two identical springs hang side by side (in parallel) holding one weight, how do you think the stretch of each spring compares with one spring alone?💡 2本のばねが上向きに引く力を合わせると、おもりの重さとどんな関係になるはずでしょうか。When you add together the upward pulls of the two springs, how should that total relate to the weight?

Try it

Select "1 spring" and set the "Weight" slider to 1.0 N → 2.0 N → 3.0 N. Record the "Stretch" reading on the ruler and the "Stretch" value at the top (Base: 1 N stretches 2 cm).
Set the weight to 2.0 N and watch the spring right after you move the slider. Check that it does not stop at once but bounces up and down and then settles at its new length.
Keeping 2.0 N, press "2 in series". Read the stretch of spring ① and spring ②, and the "Total" stretch on the ruler.
Press "2 in parallel". Read the "Left" and "Right" stretch values and the purple arrow's label "Total spring force" (and the force on each spring).
With "Show force arrows" on, lower the weight to 0 N and confirm that in every setup the springs return to their natural length (0 cm stretch, at the dashed line) and the arrows disappear.

Check

With one spring, what was the relationship between the weight and the stretch?→ 1.0 N で 2.0 cm、2.0 N で 4.0 cm、3.0 N で 6.0 cm のびた。 It stretched 2.0 cm at 1.0 N, 4.0 cm at 2.0 N, and 6.0 cm at 3.0 N. Doubling or tripling the weight doubled or tripled the stretch, so the stretch is proportional to the force (Hooke's law). At 0 N the stretch was 0 cm.
With a 2.0 N weight in "2 in series", what were the stretches of springs ① and ② and the total stretch?→ ばね①・②はどちらも 4.0 cm で、1本だけのときと同じ。 Springs ① and ② each stretched 4.0 cm, the same as one spring alone. The total stretch was 8.0 cm, twice that of one spring. The purple arrow's label reads "Spring ② 2.0N (① also 2.0N)": both springs carry the full 2.0 N.
With a 2.0 N weight in "2 in parallel", what were the stretches of the left and right springs, and how much force did each spring carry?→ 左右とも 2.0 cm で等しく、1本だけのとき(4.0 cm)の半分だった。 Both stretched 2.0 cm—equal to each other and half of the 4.0 cm for one spring. Each spring carried 1.00 N, and the total of the two, 2.0 N, balances the weight.
How were the gravity arrow and the spring-force arrow on the weight drawn?→ おもりの中心から、重力は下向き、ばねの力は上向きに、同じ直線上で逆向き・同じ長さに描かれていた。 From the center of the weight, gravity points down and the spring force points up: on the same line, opposite in direction, and equal in length. Increasing the weight makes both arrows longer by the same amount. Because the two forces balance, the weight can stay at rest.

Think further

In series, each spring stretches the same as a single spring—so why does the total stretch double?→ 下のばね②はおもりの重さを、上のばね①はばね②を通して同じ大きさの力を受けるので、どちらも 1 本のときと同じだけのびる(2.0 N なら 4.0 cm ずつ)。 Spring ② holds the weight, and spring ① is pulled by spring ② with the same force, so each stretches as much as a single spring (4.0 cm each at 2.0 N). The total stretch is the sum of the two, 4.0 + 4.0 = 8.0 cm, which is double.
If you want to hang a 3.0 N weight with these springs and keep the stretch as small as possible, which setup is best? Predict the stretch of each spring, then check it in the simulation.→ 並列がよい。 Parallel is best. Each spring carries 1.5 N, so each stretches 1.5 N × 2 cm/N = 3.0 cm, less than one spring alone (6.0 cm) or in series (12.0 cm in total).

The springs are ideal (1 N stretches 2 cm, k = 0.5 N/cm) and their own mass is ignored. The stretch values at the top and the force arrows show the balanced (equilibrium) values; they stay the same while the spring bounces, and only the red reading on the ruler follows the motion. In parallel, the weight is assumed not to tilt, so both springs stretch equally.
