RC Circuit: Charging and Discharging a Capacitor 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that when a capacitor charges or discharges through a resistor, the voltage and current change exponentially with a time constant τ = RC, reaching about 63.2% charge at t = τ (36.8% remaining when discharging) and nearly finishing by t = 5τ.

Predict (before you touch anything)

How does the current in the circuit right after the battery is connected compare with the current after a long time?💡 電流は抵抗にかかる電圧で決まる。 The current is set by the voltage across the resistor. Think about what happens to the capacitor's voltage as charge builds up on it.
If the resistance R is doubled, how will the time needed to charge the capacitor change?💡 R Think about what a larger R does to the current at the start.

Try it

Keep the default settings (E = 6.0 V, R = 2.0 kΩ, C = 470 µF, τ = RC = 940.0 ms) and press "Reset" to watch the capacitor charge. Watch the blue electrons and the orange "Current (opposite to electrons)" arrows in the circuit, and the readouts I, V_C, V_R and "Charged".
Read the graph markers "τ: 63.2% charged" and "5τ: 99.3%" and the "Computed" line in the panel. When t passes about 8 s and the status says "Fully charged (steady state)", record I, V_C and V_R.
Press "Switch → discharge" (or tap the switch in the circuit). The battery is disconnected, leaving a loop of R and C only. Check the sign of I, the direction of the arrows next to the resistor, and the graph marker "τ: 36.8% left".
Set the R slider to 4.0 kΩ (changing a setting resets the circuit) and compare τ, the graph width, how stretched the curves are, and the starting current I with the 2.0 kΩ case.
Change the C slider to 100 µF and 1000 µF to see how τ changes, and move the E slider to see how "½CE²" changes.

Check

With the default settings, what is V_C at t = τ (about 0.94 s), and what percentage of E is it?→ 「計算値」に V_C ≈ 3.79 V(充電率 63.2%)と表示される。 The "Computed" line shows V_C ≈ 3.79 V (63.2% charged), which is about 63.2% of 6.0 V and matches the theory value 1 − e⁻¹. At t = 5τ, V_C ≈ 5.96 V (99.3%).
When charging is complete, what are I, V_C and V_R? What are the electrons doing?→ I ≈ 0 mA、V_C ≈ 6.0 V(= E)、V_R ≈ 0 V になる。 I ≈ 0 mA, V_C ≈ 6.0 V (= E) and V_R ≈ 0 V. With no current, the electrons stop flowing. They never pass through the gap (dielectric) between the plates; they stay collected on the bottom plate.
After switching to discharge, what happens to the direction of the current in the resistor and to the I readout?→ 抵抗の電流は充電時と逆向き(→)になり、I は負の値(はじめ約 −3 mA)で表示される。 The current in the resistor reverses (→ instead of ←), and I becomes negative (about −3 mA at first). Its size then shrinks exponentially, and at t = τ, V_C has dropped to about 36.8% (about 2.2 V).
When R is changed from 2.0 kΩ to 4.0 kΩ, how do τ and the charging change?→ τ が 0.94 s から 1.88 s に2倍になり、グラフ幅も 20 s に広がる。 ただし最後の V_C は同じ E(6.0 V)になる。τ doubles from 0.94 s to 1.88 s, and the graph width grows to 20 s. The starting current, E/R, halves to 1.5 mA, and charging takes twice as long. The final V_C is still E (6.0 V).

Think further

Why does the current get smaller, and the voltage rise more slowly, as charging goes on?→ 抵抗にかかる電圧は V_R = E − V_C なので、コンデンサーに電荷がたまって V_C が大きくなるほど V_R と電流 I = V_R/R は小さくなる。 The voltage across the resistor is V_R = E − V_C. As charge builds up and V_C rises, V_R and the current I = V_R/R both fall. A smaller current adds charge more slowly, so the change keeps slowing down, which gives the exponential shape.
Suppose you want to draw a large current from a capacitor in a short time, as in a camera flash. How should R and C be chosen?→ 放電の時定数 τ = RC を小さくするため、放電経路の R を小さくする。 Use a small R in the discharge path so that τ = RC is short. The starting current is V_0/R, so a smaller R gives a larger current for a shorter time. To store more energy, ½CV², use a larger C or a higher voltage.

This is an ideal circuit that ignores the battery's internal resistance and the wire resistance; values come from the Euler method (Δt = τ/4000) and match theory closely. For small τ the playback is slowed down (see "Speed"), but the graph's time axis is in real seconds. Moving a slider resets the charge to 0, so choose the settings first and charge again before comparing discharges.
