Electric Field and Equipotential Lines
Students understand that field lines and equipotential lines always cross at right angles, and that potential adds as scalars while the electric field adds as vectors (superposition).

Predict (before you touch anything)
At the exact midpoint between a +1 μC and a −1 μC point charge, will the potential V and the field strength |E| each be zero?💡 電位は向きのない量、電場は向きのある量であることに注目しよう。Remember that potential has no direction, but the electric field does.
If both charges are +1 μC, what happens to V and |E| at the midpoint?💡 それぞれの電荷が中点につくる電場の向きを矢印で描いてみよう。Sketch the direction of the field each charge produces at the midpoint.
Try it
Press the "+1/−1" button and confirm that the green dashed line (the V=0 equipotential) is the perpendicular bisector of the segment joining the charges. Note the direction of the arrows on the white field lines.
Press "Pause", then tap the midpoint between the charges to place the probe, and record the displayed V and |E|.
Press "+1/+1", place the probe at the midpoint again, and record V and |E|. Also check that the top-left label reads "V=0 line: not on screen".
Press "B=0" and check that a single charge gives concentric circular equipotentials and radial field lines. Then move the qB slider gradually away from 0 and watch the pattern change.
Return to "+1/−1", press "Play", and watch the orange + test charge move along a field line. Then change the ΔV slider from 1.0 kV to 3.0 kV and see how the number of equipotential lines changes.
Check
With +1/−1, what are V and |E| at the midpoint?→ V = 0.000 kV だが |E| ≈ 71.9 kV/m(向き 0°、正電荷Aから負電荷Bの向き)で、電場は0ではない。V = 0.000 kV, but |E| ≈ 71.9 kV/m (direction 0°, from positive A toward negative B), so the field is not zero.
With +1/+1, what are V and |E| at the midpoint?→ |E| = 0 kV/m だが V ≈ +35.95 kV(= 2kq/0.5 m)で、電位は0ではない。|E| = 0 kV/m, but V ≈ +35.95 kV (= 2kq/0.5 m), so the potential is not zero.
At what angle do field lines cross equipotential lines?→ どの交点でも直角(直交)に交わっている。They cross at right angles (perpendicular) at every intersection.
What happens to the number of equipotential lines when ΔV is increased? How is their spacing near a charge?→ ΔV A larger ΔV gives fewer lines. Closer to a charge, the equipotential lines are more tightly spaced.
Think further
Why must field lines and equipotential lines always be perpendicular?→ 等電位線に沿って電荷を動かしても電位が変わらないので、電場がする仕事は0。 Moving a charge along an equipotential does not change its potential, so the field does zero work. For W = qE·Δs to be zero, E must be perpendicular to the direction of motion along the equipotential.
Where V = 0, E = 0" and "Where E = 0, V = 0" are both false. Explain using the simulation results.→ +1/−1 の中点は V=0 でも |E|≈71.9 kV/m、+1/+1 の中点は |E|=0 でも V≈36 kV。 At the +1/−1 midpoint V = 0 but |E| ≈ 71.9 kV/m; at the +1/+1 midpoint |E| = 0 but V ≈ 36 kV. The field depends on how steeply the potential changes (its gradient), not on the value of the potential itself.
Common misconceptions
Where the potential is zero, the field is also zero (in fact the field is set by the slope of the potential).
Potentials cancel by direction like fields do (in fact potential is a signed scalar sum).

The charges are 1.0 m apart and V = k(qA/rA + qB/rB) is computed exactly. The test charge moves as v = μE in a viscous medium (max 2.5 m/s), so it follows field lines without inertia; this is not the trajectory of a freely accelerating particle in vacuum. Equipotentials too closely spaced near a charge are omitted.
