Doppler Effect in Echoes (Radar Method)
Students understand that for a wave reflected from a moving object, the Doppler effect acts twice (the object receives as a moving observer and re-emits as a moving source), so the reflected frequency is f″ = f0(c+v)/(c−v), and the shift is about twice that when only one of them moves.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When the reflector is moving toward the source, how do you think the spacing of the returning (reflected) wavefronts compares with the spacing of the incident wavefronts?💡 反射板は次の入射波面に出会う前に、自分から前へ進んでいます。 The reflector moves forward on its own before it meets the next incident wavefront. Think about where each new reflected wave starts compared with the previous one.
How large do you think the frequency shift of the reflected wave is compared with the case where only the observer moves (f0(1+v/c))?💡 波が反射板に届くときと、反射板から出ていくときの2つの場面に分けて考えましょう。Split it into two stages: when the wave arrives at the reflector, and when it leaves the reflector.
Try it
Run the default settings (① Reflector speed v = +0.40c (approaching), ② Speed of sound c = 110 units/s, ③ Source frequency f0 = 2.00 Hz) for a while, and watch the blue incident waves, the orange reflected waves, and the starting points of the reflected waves (yellow dots) moving with the reflector.
Read the values f0 → f′ → f″ in the "Frequency chain" panel and the incident λ and reflected λ″ in the "On-screen measurement" panel.
Set "① Reflector speed v" to −0.40c (moving away), press "Reset", and see how the reflected ring spacing and f″ change.
Set v to +0.05c and compare three values: the reflected wave f″, the approximation f0(1+2v/c), and the one-step-only value f0(1+v/c).
Return v to +0.40c, change "② Speed of sound c" to 60 and "③ Source frequency f0" to 4.00 Hz, and check how λ and f″ change.
Check
At v = +0.40c (approaching), what were f′ and f″, and the incident λ and reflected λ″?→ f′ = 2.800 Hz、f″ = 4.667 Hz。 f′ = 2.800 Hz and f″ = 4.667 Hz. The incident λ was 55.0 and the reflected λ″ was 23.6 (measured 23.57), so the reflected rings were closer together than the incident ones (compressed).
What happened to the reflected waves at v = −0.40c (moving away)?→ f″ = 0.857 Hz f″ fell to 0.857 Hz, and the reflected λ″ became 128.3 (measured 128.33), wider than the incident 55.0 (stretched).
At v = +0.05c, what were f″, f0(1+2v/c) and f0(1+v/c)?→ f″ = 2.211 Hz、近似 f0(1+2v/c) = 2.200 Hz(差 0.011 Hz)、一段だけ f0(1+v/c) = 2.100 Hz。 f″ = 2.211 Hz, the approximation f0(1+2v/c) = 2.200 Hz (difference 0.011 Hz), and one step only f0(1+v/c) = 2.100 Hz. At low speed, the reflected shift (+0.21 Hz) is about twice the one-step shift (+0.10 Hz) (shift ratio 2.105).
When c was set to 60, and when f0 was set to 4.00 Hz, what changed and what did not?→ c = 60 では λ = 30.0、λ″ = 12.9 と波長は短くなったが、v は c に対する比(0.40c)で決めているので f″ = 4.667 Hz は変わらなかった。 At c = 60, the wavelengths got shorter (λ = 30.0, λ″ = 12.9), but because v is set as a fraction of c (0.40c), f″ stayed at 4.667 Hz. At f0 = 4.00 Hz, f″ became 9.333 Hz, doubling in proportion to f0, and λ halved to 27.5.
Think further
Derive f″ = f0(c+v)/(c−v) in two stages: "moving observer" and "moving source".→ 1段目:反射板は速さ v で波源に近づく観測者なので、受ける振動数は f′ = f0(c+v)/c。 Stage 1: the reflector is an observer approaching at speed v, so it receives f′ = f0(c+v)/c. Stage 2: the reflector is a source approaching at speed v while emitting waves at f′, so the frequency observed on the source side is f″ = f′ c/(c−v). Multiplying gives f″ = f0(c+v)/(c−v). For v ≪ c, f″ ≈ f0(1+2v/c), so the shift is about doubled.
How do police speed guns (radar) and bats use this mechanism?→ 送った波の振動数 f0 と、もどってきた反射波の振動数 f″ の差(うなりなど)を測れば、v ≈ c(f″ − f0)/(2f0) から相手の速さが分かる。 By measuring the difference between the sent frequency f0 and the returning frequency f″ (for example as beats), the target's speed can be found from v ≈ c(f″ − f0)/(2f0). The frequency is higher when the target approaches and lower when it moves away, so the direction of motion can also be told.
Common misconceptions
The reflector just bounces the wave back, so the reflected frequency equals the received f′ (only one step of shift)." The reflector also acts as a moving source when it sends the wave back, so the Doppler effect acts again and the shift is about doubled.
The speed of the reflected or incident wave changes by the reflector's speed." As the simulation shows, every wavefront spreads at the same speed c; what changes is the spacing (wavelength) and frequency.

Lengths and speeds are in arbitrary screen units, and the frequency is lowered to 0.6–4 Hz so the rings are easy to see. Since v is set as a fraction of c, changing c does not change f″; point this out to students. The reflector moves along one axis and jumps back to its start at the end of its track. The "On-screen measurement" shows measured wavefront spacing on the axis; have students confirm it matches the formula.
