Diffraction Grating: White Light Dispersion Simulator
Students understand that a diffraction grating splits white light into a spectrum because each wavelength interferes constructively where d sinθ = mλ, that the grating spacing d decides which orders can be observed, and that the number of slits N decides how sharp the bright lines are.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When white light passes through a grating, which color in the 1st-order spectrum do you think lies closer to the 0th order (the light that goes straight): violet or red?💡 格子方程式 d・sinθ = mλ で、d と m が同じなら λ の大小は θ にどう関係するでしょうか。In the grating equation d sinθ = mλ, if d and m stay the same, how does the size of λ relate to θ?
If you make the grating spacing d smaller (slits closer together), do you think the number of observable orders (1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...) will increase or decrease?💡 sinθ はどんな角度でも 1 を超えられないことに注目しましょう。Remember that sinθ can never be larger than 1 for any angle.
Try it
In the starting state (Grating spacing d = 1.30 µm, Number of slits N = 6 slits), watch the top view: photons from the light source bend by color the moment they pass the grating, while the "0th order (white)" beam goes straight. Use "Pause" to freeze the motion if needed.
Compare where violet and red are in the "+1st" band, and use the screen intensity graph below to read that the 1st-order band lies at roughly 0.3L to 0.6L.
Move the "Grating spacing d" slider down to 0.80 µm, then up to 2.00 µm, and record how the order labels in the top view (including "(no red)") and the "Visible orders" readout at the bottom change.
Return d to 1.30 µm, then set the "Number of slits N" slider to 2 → 20 → 50 slits. Observe the width of the peaks in the screen intensity graph and the number of small peaks in the zoom graph (λ=550nm) on the right.
With N = 2 slits, check that the yellow-green curve in the zoom graph overlaps the dotted line (Young's interference, 4cos²α).
Check
In the 1st-order spectrum, which color was on the inside (closer to the 0th order): violet or red?→ 紫が内側、赤が外側。 Violet is on the inside and red on the outside. At d = 1.30 µm, violet (400 nm) lands at about 0.3L and red (700 nm) at about 0.6L. A longer wavelength gives a larger sinθ = mλ/d, so a larger diffraction angle.
At d = 1.30 µm, what happened to the 2nd- and 3rd-order light? How did that change at d = 0.80 µm and d = 2.00 µm?→ d = 1.30 µm At d = 1.30 µm, the 2nd order appears only for λ<650 nm and the 3rd only for λ<433 nm, so red is missing ("(no red)"); orders ±4 and higher do not exist. At d = 0.80 µm only ±1 (all colors) remains and orders 2 and higher disappear. At d = 2.00 µm, ±1 to ±2 have all colors and ±3 (λ<667 nm) and ±4 (λ<500 nm) partly appear, so the missing orders come back.
When N was increased from 2 to 20 and 50 slits, how did the peaks (principal maxima) in the intensity graph change?→ 主極大の位置は変わらず、幅が細く鋭くなった。 The positions of the principal maxima stayed the same, but they became narrower and sharper. At N = 2 the peaks are broad and colors overlap; at N = 20 they split into thin lines for each color and the colors on the screen strip become clearer. In the zoom graph, N−1 dark points (19 at N=20) and N−2 small secondary maxima (18) appear between the principal maxima.
What happened to the 0th-order light when you changed N or d?→ 常に θ = 0 にまっすぐ進む白い帯のままだった。 It always stayed as a white band going straight ahead at θ = 0. For m = 0, sinθ = 0 for every wavelength, so all colors overlap at the same place and look white.
Think further
Why do the higher orders disappear starting from the red side when d is made smaller?→ sinθ = mλ/d Because sinθ = mλ/d cannot exceed 1, only wavelengths with mλ < d can appear in that order. Red has the longest λ, so it breaks this condition first and is lost first. For example, at d = 1.30 µm and m = 2, only λ < 650 nm remains.
Why do spectrometers use gratings with many slits when they need to tell wavelengths apart precisely?→ N Increasing N narrows each principal maximum to about λ/(Nd), so bright lines of nearby wavelengths no longer overlap and can be seen separately. In the simulation, colors blend at N = 2 but become sharp separate lines at N = 50.
Common misconceptions
Like a prism, a grating bends violet the most." In fact, a grating diffracts longer wavelengths (red) more, so in the 1st-order spectrum violet is on the inside and red on the outside.
Any order, no matter how high, can be seen." Light with |mλ/d| > 1 does not exist, so there is a maximum observable order, and it gets smaller as d gets smaller.

The model assumes normal incidence and ignores the single-slit diffraction envelope, so higher-order lines are drawn as bright as the 0th order (in reality they get dimmer farther out). The intensity graph covers only |x| ≤ 3L (θ ≤ 71.6°); have students check larger angles in the top view and the "Visible orders" readout. Each photon picks its direction with probability given by the intensity pattern for its wavelength, which can be used to connect the particle picture of light with wave interference.
