Testing Hooke's Law: Spring Experiment
Predict (before you touch anything)
A spring stretches 3 cm when pulled with 3 N. How far do you think it will stretch when pulled with 6 N? Do you think the same rule still holds if you keep pulling up to 10 N?💡 力を少しずつ増やしたときの「のびの増え方」に注目しましょう。 Pay attention to how the extension grows as you increase the force step by step. Also think about what happens to a real spring if you pull it too hard.
When a weight hangs on a spring and is at rest, how do you think the force of the spring pulling up compares with the force pulling the weight down?💡 物体が止まっているとき、その物体にはたらく力はどうなっているでしょうか。What must be true of the forces acting on an object that is not moving?
Try it
Press "Reset (new spring)", then raise the "Pulling force F" slider 1 N at a time up to 6 N, each time waiting for the spring to oscillate and come to rest. Watch the data points (●) being recorded on the F–x graph on the right.
Set F to 3 N and, once the spring is at rest, compare the length and size of the "Spring force ↑" (blue arrow) and "F ↓" (red arrow), and check the "balanced" message at the upper left. Also watch the "oscillating → settling" behavior right after you change the force.
Keeping F = 3 N, change the "Spring constant k" slider from 100 N/m to 200 N/m and see how the extension and the slope of the graph change. Return k to 100 N/m and also try "Two springs in parallel (2k)" and "Two springs in series (k/2)" under "Connecting springs".
Go back to "One spring (k)" with k = 100 N/m, press "Reset (new spring)", and raise F through 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 N. Finally return F to 0 N and check whether the spring goes back to its natural length (x = 0).
Check
With k = 100 N/m, what was the extension at F = 3 N and at F = 6 N? How did the data points line up on the graph?→ 3 N で 3.0 cm、6 N で 6.0 cm。 3.0 cm at 3 N and 6.0 cm at 6 N. Doubling the force doubled the extension, and the data points lay on a straight line through the origin (the extension is proportional to the force).
When the spring was at rest, what did the "Spring force ↑" and "F ↓" arrows look like?→ 同じ長さ(どちらも 3.0 N)で向きが反対になっていて、2つの力はつり合っていた。 They were the same length (both 3.0 N) and pointed in opposite directions: the two forces were balanced. Right after the force was changed they were unequal (for example, 3.00 N down and 2.36 N up), and the spring oscillated up and down before settling at the new balance position.
At F = 3 N, what was the extension with k = 200 N/m, with springs in parallel (2k), and with springs in series (k/2)? How did the slope of the graph change?→ k = 200 N/m で 1.5 cm、並列(2k = 200 N/m)でも 1.5 cm、直列(k/2 = 50 N/m)で 6.0 cm。 1.5 cm with k = 200 N/m, also 1.5 cm in parallel (2k = 200 N/m), and 6.0 cm in series (k/2 = 50 N/m). The larger k is, the smaller the extension, and the steeper the straight line on the F–x graph (its slope equals k).
What happened to the graph and the spring when F went above 7 N? What happened when F was returned to 0 N?→ 比例限界 7 N をこえるとグラフが折れ曲がって直線からはずれ、9 N ではのびが 11.0 cm(比例なら 9 cm)になった。 Above the 7 N limit of proportionality the graph bent away from the straight line; at 9 N the extension was 11.0 cm instead of the 9 cm a proportional spring would give. When F was returned to 0 N, the spring stayed stretched by about 2.0 cm and did not return to its natural length (permanent deformation).
Think further
Why can a spring balance measure the size of a force? What should you be careful about when using one?→ 比例限界までは、ばねののびが力の大きさに比例するので、のびの長さを目盛りにすれば力の大きさが読み取れるから。 Up to the limit of proportionality, the extension is proportional to the force, so marking a scale in units of extension lets you read the force. If you pull beyond that limit (the maximum force it can measure), the extension is no longer proportional and the spring does not return to its original shape, so it will no longer measure correctly.
Why does connecting two identical springs side by side (in parallel) give a smaller extension than one spring?→ 引く力 F を2本のばねで分け合うので、1本あたりにかかる力は F の半分になり、のびも半分になるから。 The pulling force F is shared between the two springs, so each spring carries half of F and stretches half as much. Together they act like a single spring with twice the spring constant (2k).
Common misconceptions
A spring keeps stretching in proportion to the force however hard you pull." Proportionality holds only up to the limit of proportionality; beyond it the extension grows faster, and the spring does not return to its original length when the force is removed.
The total length of the spring is proportional to the force." It is the extension x measured from the natural length, not the whole length of the spring, that is proportional to the force.

The F–x graph here has force F on the vertical axis and extension x on the horizontal axis, the reverse of the force-horizontal, extension-vertical graph common in Japanese lower-secondary textbooks, so its slope equals the spring constant k. The spring constant is in N/m (100 N/m means 1 cm of extension per 1 N). The limit of proportionality is fixed at 7 N per spring in this model, and both the deformation beyond it and the damped oscillation after a sudden change of force are simplified. Series and parallel connections go beyond the grade 7 curriculum and can be used as an extension.
