Young's Double-Slit Simulator

Students understand that light from two slits interferes constructively where the path difference Δ = d sinθ is a whole number of wavelengths and destructively where it is a half-number, producing bright and dark fringes on the screen with spacing Δy = λL/d.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the wavelength λ is made longer (from violet to red), do you think the spacing between bright fringes on the screen will widen or narrow?💡 2つのスリットからの経路差が「1波長」になる方向が、中央からどれだけ離れるかを考えましょう。Think about how far from the center you need to go for the path difference from the two slits to become one wavelength.
Do you think the very center of the screen (the point equally far from both slits) will be bright or dark?💡 2つの波が同じ距離を進んで出会うとき、山と谷はどう重なるでしょうか。When two waves travel the same distance and meet, how do their crests and troughs line up?

Try it

With the default settings (Wavelength λ = 550 nm, Slit spacing d = 4.0 μm, Distance L = 0.80 m), look at the top view and confirm that the sum of the waves spreading from the two slits shows strongly colored bands where they add up and white nodal lines (dashed, "nodal line Δ=(m+½)λ") where they cancel.
Drag on the bottom panel (the screen intensity graph and fringe bar) to move the observation point to the m=0 and m=1 bright fringes and to the dark fringes between them. Record the displayed path difference Δ (in units of λ) and whether it says the waves add up or cancel out.
Set the "Wavelength λ" slider to 380 nm and to 760 nm, and compare the fringe color and the Δy = λL/d value shown at the top of the graph.
Return λ to 550 nm, then set "Slit spacing d" to 3.0 μm and 6.0 μm, and "Distance L" to 0.40 m, and record how Δy changes.
Drag the observation point to the red "m=+2 missing" mark and read the message explaining why it is dark even though the path difference is 2λ.

Check

At the bright and dark fringes, what was the path difference Δ in units of λ?→ 中央(m=0)では Δ = 0、1次明線(y ≈ 11 cm)では Δ ≈ 1.0λ で「強め合う(明線)」。 At the center (m=0) Δ = 0, and at the 1st bright fringe (y ≈ 11 cm) Δ ≈ 1.0λ, labeled "waves add up (bright fringe)". At the dark fringe between them (y ≈ 5.7 cm) Δ ≈ 0.5λ, and at y ≈ 16.9 cm Δ = 1.5λ, labeled "waves cancel out (dark fringe)".
What was Δy at λ = 380 nm, 550 nm and 760 nm?→ それぞれ約 7.60 cm、11.00 cm、15.20 cm。 About 7.60 cm, 11.00 cm and 15.20 cm. Doubling the wavelength (380 → 760 nm) doubled the fringe spacing, and the color changed from violet to red.
How did Δy change when you changed d or L?→ d = 3.0 μm At d = 3.0 μm it was about 14.67 cm and at d = 6.0 μm about 7.33 cm, so a larger d gives narrower fringes (inversely proportional to d). At L = 0.40 m it was about 5.50 cm, so halving L halves the spacing (proportional to L).
What did you see at the m = ±2 positions?→ 経路差は 2λ で2波は強め合う条件なのに、強度はほぼ 0 で暗かった。 The path difference is 2λ, so the two waves should add up, but the intensity was almost 0 and it was dark. The single-slit diffraction envelope (dotted line) from the slit width a = d/2 is exactly zero there, so this order is missing (a missing order).

Think further

Using Δy = λL/d, you can measure the wavelength of light, which is far too small to see. How would you do it?→ d With an apparatus of known d and L, measure the bright-fringe spacing Δy on the screen with a ruler and calculate λ = d Δy / L. A smaller d and larger L make Δy larger and easier to measure. Young used this idea to show that light is a wave and to find its wavelength.
Why is the 1st-order bright fringe dimmer than the central one?→ 実際のスリットには幅があり、1つのスリットからの光自体が中央から離れるほど弱くなる(単スリット回折の包絡線)。 Real slits have width, so the light from each single slit already gets weaker away from the center (the single-slit diffraction envelope). Even when the two waves add up, the result cannot exceed that envelope, so at m=1 the intensity drops to about I/I₀ ≈ 0.38–0.4.

The top view is a close-up near the slits; the ratio of d to λ is true to scale, but each slit is treated as a point source of equal amplitude. The bottom intensity includes the single-slit envelope with the slit width fixed at a = d/2 and uses sinθ = y/√(y²+L²) without approximation, so the actual 1st bright fringe (e.g. 11.11 cm) differs slightly from the theoretical Δy = λL/d (11.00 cm). This is a good chance to discuss the small-angle approximation used in textbooks.
