Predict (before you touch anything)
A box holds 24 light molecules and 24 heavy molecules whose mass is 4 times larger. At the same temperature, which do you think moves faster, and by about how many times?💡 温度が同じとき、何が等しくなるのかを考えよう。 Think about what is equal when the temperature is the same. In ½mv², if m is 4 times larger, what must happen to v²?
Which do you think is larger: the pressure (partial pressure) the heavy molecules exert on the walls, or that of the light molecules?💡 重い分子は1回ぶつかるときの勢いは大きいが、速さはどうか。 A heavy molecule hits with more momentum each time, but how fast does it move? Also think about how often it hits.

With the initial settings ((A) Temperature T = 300 K, (B) Heavy fraction 50 %, (C) Mass ratio 4.0 ×), wait a few seconds and record (a) v_rms, (b) mean ½mv², ½mv² ÷ kT, and (c) the measured and theoretical partial pressures for both light and heavy. Also read the "v_rms ratio (light/heavy)".
Lower (C) Mass ratio to 1.0 ×, wait a few seconds, and record how v_rms and the partial pressures change (or do not). Then set it back to 4.0 ×.
Set (B) Heavy fraction to 25 %, and record the breakdown of molecules (48 in total) and how each partial pressure and the total pressure change in the stacked bar chart below.
Set (B) back to 50 %, raise (A) Temperature T to 1200 K, and find by what factor v_rms, the mean ½mv² and the partial pressures increased.

At 300 K with mass ratio 4, what were v_rms and the mean ½mv² for light and heavy?→ v_rms v_rms was about 79 for light and about 40 for heavy (units/s), a ratio of about 1.95–2.0 (theory √4 = 2.00). Meanwhile the mean ½mv² was about 4.1×10⁻²¹ J for both, and ½mv² ÷ kT was about 1.0 for both — equal.
When the mass ratio went from 4.0 × to 1.0 ×, what changed and what did not?→ 重い分子の v_rms は約40から約80に上がり、軽い分子と同じになった(比 約1.0)。 The heavy molecules' v_rms rose from about 40 to about 80, the same as the light ones (ratio about 1.0), and their disks got smaller. But the theoretical partial pressures stayed at 24.00 p₀ for both, and the measured values hardly changed.
When the heavy fraction was set to 25 %, what happened to the numbers of molecules and the partial pressures?→ 合計は48個のまま、軽36個・重12個になった。 The total stayed at 48, now 36 light and 12 heavy. The theoretical partial pressures were 36.00 p₀ for light and 12.00 p₀ for heavy, proportional to the numbers of molecules, and the total stayed at 48.00 p₀ (the measured values were a few percent higher).
When the temperature went from 300 K to 1200 K (4 times), what increased, and by how much?→ 平均½mv² は軽・重とも約4倍(約16.5×10⁻²¹ J)、v_rms は約2倍(軽 約161、重 約80)、部分圧の理論値は 24 → 96 p₀ で4倍、全圧は 192 p₀ になった。 The mean ½mv² became about 4 times larger for both (about 16.5×10⁻²¹ J), v_rms about 2 times (light about 161, heavy about 80), and the theoretical partial pressures went from 24 to 96 p₀ (4 times), giving a total of 192 p₀. The v_rms ratio stayed at about 2.0.

A heavy molecule gives the wall more momentum per hit, so why is its partial pressure the same as that of the light molecules?→ 1回の運動量変化は 2mv⊥ で m に比例するが、速さは 1/√m に比例して遅くなるので、壁にぶつかる回数(v に比例)は減る。 The momentum change per hit is 2mv⊥, proportional to m, but the speed is proportional to 1/√m, so the number of hits (proportional to v) decreases. Pressure is (momentum change per hit) × (number of hits), proportional to mv², and the average mv² depends only on temperature, so equal numbers of molecules give equal partial pressures.
If air (about 78 % nitrogen and 21 % oxygen) is at 1 atm, about what is the partial pressure of oxygen? Explain using what you saw in this simulation.→ 部分圧は分子の種類や質量によらず分子数に比例するので、酸素の部分圧は全圧の約21 %、およそ0.21気圧になる。 Partial pressure is proportional to the number of molecules regardless of their kind or mass, so oxygen's partial pressure is about 21 % of the total, roughly 0.21 atm. This is just like the simulation, where changing the fraction split the pressure in proportion to the numbers of molecules and the total was the sum.
Common misconceptions
A gas of heavier molecules has a higher pressure." At the same temperature and number of molecules, the partial pressure is the same regardless of mass (moving the mass-ratio slider barely changes the partial pressures).
At the same temperature, molecules move at the same speed." What is equal is the average kinetic energy; heavier molecules move more slowly (4 times the mass gives half the speed).

The model uses 48 hard disks in 2D, so the average kinetic energy per molecule is kT, not the 3D value (3/2)kT found in textbooks. Because the molecules have a finite size, the measured pressure comes out a few percent (up to nearly 10 % in some settings) higher than the theory, and fluctuations are larger for the kind with fewer molecules. Every 0.5 s all molecules' speeds are rescaled by one common factor to hold the set temperature, but the equal sharing of kinetic energy between light and heavy molecules comes from their elastic collisions.
