Pressure from Collisions – Molecular Speed Distribution
Students understand that gas pressure arises from the momentum change 2mv⊥ of many molecules hitting the walls, that molecular speed follows v_rms = √(3kT/m) and so rises with temperature and falls with mass, yet at fixed volume and number of molecules the pressure p = NkT/V depends only on temperature, not on the kind of gas.

At the same temperature, if the same number of light helium (He) or heavy argon (Ar) molecules is put in the same container, how do you think their molecular speeds and pressures will compare?💡 温度は分子1個の平均運動エネルギー (1/2)m⟨v²⟩ を表している。 Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of one molecule, (1/2)m⟨v²⟩. Pressure depends both on how hard each collision is and on how often collisions happen.
If the temperature is made 4 times larger, how much faster do you think the molecules will move?💡 運動エネルギーは速さの2乗に比例することを使おう。Use the fact that kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the speed.

With "Temperature T" at 300 K and "Gas" O₂, wait a few seconds, then record v_rms (measured and theory), the most probable speed v_p, the mean ⟨v⟩, the pressure (measured and theory NkT/V) and the wall-hit rate from the readout. Also note where the histogram peak is.
Raise "Temperature T" to 1200 K, wait a few seconds and record the same values. Watch the molecules, the position and width of the histogram hump, and the pressure gauge.
Set "Temperature T" back to 300 K and switch "Gas" to He, Ar and Kr in turn. For each, wait a few seconds and record v_rms, the pressure, the wall-hit rate and the last Δp = 2mv⊥.
Press "Resample" to redraw the velocities, and compare the histogram bars (measured) with the white line (Maxwell distribution). Also check the values of the left side (1/2)m⟨v²⟩ and the right side (3/2)kT.
Check
For O₂ at 300 K, what were v_rms and the pressure?→ v_rms ≈ 484 m/s(理論 √(3kT/m) と一致)、v_p ≈ 395 m/s、⟨v⟩ ≈ 446 m/s で v_p < ⟨v⟩ < v_rms。 v_rms ≈ 484 m/s (matching the theory √(3kT/m)), v_p ≈ 395 m/s and ⟨v⟩ ≈ 446 m/s, so v_p < ⟨v⟩ < v_rms. The theoretical pressure NkT/V was 828 kPa, and the value measured from collisions fluctuated near it, around 770–830 kPa.
When the temperature went from 300 K to 1200 K (4 times), what changed and how?→ v_rms v_rms went from 484 to 967 m/s, about 2 times (√4), and the histogram hump moved to higher speeds and became lower and wider. The theoretical pressure went from 828 to 3314 kPa, exactly 4 times, and the wall hits became more frequent.
At 300 K, how did v_rms and the pressure change when you changed the gas?→ v_rms は He 約1367 m/s、O₂ 約484 m/s、Ar 約433 m/s、Kr 約299 m/s と、重い分子ほど遅くなった(1/√m に比例)。 v_rms was about 1367 m/s for He, 484 m/s for O₂, 433 m/s for Ar and 299 m/s for Kr: the heavier the molecule, the slower it moved (proportional to 1/√m). Even so, the theoretical pressure was 828 kPa for all of them, and the measured values were nearly the same (around 750–800 kPa).
How did He and Kr differ in the wall-hit rate and in Δp = 2mv⊥ per hit?→ He He hit the walls often, about 190 times per second, but each Δp was small, about 8×10⁻²⁴ kg·m/s. Kr hit only about 40 times per second, but each Δp was large, about 4×10⁻²³ kg·m/s. Rate × strength balances out, so the pressure is nearly the same.
Think further
Using p = (1/3)(N/V)m⟨v²⟩ and (1/2)m⟨v²⟩ = (3/2)kT, explain with equations why the pressure does not depend on the molecular mass.→ 2式から m⟨v²⟩ = 3kT なので、p = (1/3)(N/V)·3kT = NkT/V となり m が消える。 From the two equations, m⟨v²⟩ = 3kT, so p = (1/3)(N/V)·3kT = NkT/V and m cancels out. A heavy molecule has a larger momentum change 2mv⊥ per hit, but it moves more slowly and hits less often, and the two effects exactly cancel. This is the equation of state pV = NkT (= nRT).
Why might hydrogen and helium escape from Earth's atmosphere into space more easily than nitrogen and oxygen?→ 同じ温度でも軽い分子ほど v_rms が大きく、分布の裾には非常に速い分子が多く含まれる。 At the same temperature, lighter molecules have a larger v_rms, and the tail of their distribution contains more very fast molecules. High in the atmosphere some of these can exceed the escape velocity (about 11 km/s), so lighter gases gradually leak away.
Common misconceptions
A gas of heavier molecules pushes harder on the walls, so its pressure is higher." Each hit is stronger, but the molecules are slower and hit less often, so at the same temperature, volume and number of molecules the pressure is the same.
In a gas at one temperature, all molecules move at the same speed." Speeds are spread over a wide distribution (the Maxwell distribution); temperature sets the average kinetic energy.

The model uses N = 200 molecules in a cube with 10 nm edges, with time stretched so that 1 second on screen = 8 ps. The measured pressure is computed from hits on the four drawn walls over the last 24 ps, so it fluctuates by a few to about 10 percent and needs a few seconds to settle after you change the temperature or gas. When the temperature or gas is changed, all velocities are rescaled at once by v ∝ √(T/m) so that ⟨v²⟩ always equals 3kT/m (the process of heat transfer itself is not modeled).
